Remember these cars well, my grandfather was a Ford exec. from the 50’s thru the 70’s. He always had a new Lincoln lease every year. I always loved riding in whatever Lincoln he had. My secretary drove this car....the white and blue Mark V. One winter we had a terrible sleet and snow storm during the day. She was afraid to drive ( her boy friend picked her up) so she allowed me to drive her beautiful Mark V home and park it in my garage. The only draw back was I lived close to work and had to leave my old Bonneville at work ( no problem). 30+ years later I still remember how that car rode and drove ... It was heaven and I was in heaven. It fit perfectly in my garage ( I had my doubts) and I dreamed to one day own one....didn't get one but drove 3 beautiful Cadillacs but they never measured up to that Mark V. That Bill Bass Mark made me feel rich.

That blue and white Bill Blass edition is gorgeous. And as long as you don't mind 0-60 mph in the 14 second range, no road feel in the steering wheel, and cornering capability equal to a pickup, it's the epitome of late 1970s luxury cars.

None of that matters. Road feel, 0-60 times, cornering. None of it. Out on the interstates, floating along at 70 or 75, going out to dinner, or ice cream, then getting off the road and driving through some historic American town, opening up that massive moonroof. Man, that's where this car shines. As for power? It's got plenty. If you need to extra power, floor the accelerator, it'll shift down. It's just fine.

The thing about these old V8s vs new V8s is the way the put the power down. New V8s rev far higher than their predecessors. But the old V8s could haul, as in they could tow. New V8 powered cars could pull a little trailer, but you could haul a camper with a Lincoln. What we think is only a job for a truck used be done by cars as well. It's important to remember most people didn't own trucks. Only farmers, construction workers, and a few select others would buy one. Everyone else bought a car and it did everything. Another interesting thing about these old V8 cars is they're still around. Some people use them everyday as a regular car.

It went into the dealership every three months, whether it needed it or not. When we both got older, I would take her out to brunch once a month at the U.S. Grant Hotel in San Diego. We'd get really dressed up, and I'd drive this beast of a car. The reviewer is absolutely correct. It's ostentatious, it's impractical, and it's beautiful, and it's comfortable. I loved the car, but bought a 1998 Lincoln Mark VIII LSC Collector's Edition, and gave the newer car the garage space. My 78 Continental was featured in the movie "Argo", so it will always be memorialized. Love to buy a 1978 Lincoln Continental Mark V Diamond Jubilee Edition, or a 79 Mark V Collector Series some day.

I was born too late to be able to have bought one of these back in the day. I miss this kind of car. I don’t want to be connected to the road. I don’t want feedback from the power steering. I don’t want to go from 0 to 60 in 5 seconds. I don’t want a car that looks like a wind tunnel experiment. I do want to be separated from pot holes and wind noise. I guess I’ll just have to find one of these in good shape and buy it today.

Luckily, these were very well built and very solidly built cars. For today's buyer who would like one, they are in abundance and are still very reasonably priced and in very good condition. Also, you are pretty much aware of the type of buyer for these cars. As opposed to a teenager with some red sports car beaten to death.

Excellent video, thank for making this, Joe. I was a teenager when this car was new, and I remember the designer series Lincolns well. @styldsteel16 жыл бұрын
More or less, depending on how the Marks were optioned out, set the buyer back about 15 thousand. For the 1978 model year, Ford chose two cars to celebrate their 75th anniversary. The Diamond Jubilee option were available to be added to the Mark V and the Thunderbird. I don't know about the Thunderbird, but add the $8000 option to the Mark, this brought the first American Automobile to break to 20 thousand dollar mark. As Auto Moments pointed out.."this car was insanely expensive" For the 1979 model year. you could add the "Collector's Edition" option which was nearly as expensive. Cheers!

New subscriber and my first comment. My grandfather owned a 1938 Lincoln Zephyr. My father owned Lincoln Town Cars and I too bought my first Lincoln in 2008; a beautiful Town Car Signature Limited Edition. Big, heavy, solid, surprisingly good economy, and that beautiful highway ride. I still own it and it is in near showroom condition. My wife wanted me to sell it but I just can't. There is something about these traditional luxury cars that defy modern luxury logic. To this day when I see an incredible example like the one in this video I smile and nod. The owner understands what these cars represent and though not for every taste it is something special. I'd love to own a Mark V like the one in the video but I'm happy with what I own.

A true classic! It should be noted before others chime in about the lack of power, that the last of the large Lincolns used a Ford truck engine as the other full size Fords had been downsized with a more modern 5.0L V8. This is why the power rating was so low as it was tuned for low RPM operation and a lot of low end torque - just about the power curve of a diesel engine.
@AutoMoments6 жыл бұрын
Very good point! We didn't have enough time to talk about torque and all that stuff, but as we said, the car still feels plenty powerful to drive. It accelerates surprisingly quick given its massive size, and if it were any faster it might be kind of difficult to control safely. Haha. Thanks for watching!

@ganymedeIV4 You make a really valid point. Sure, it would only make sense that with all new suspension components it would certainly handle like when it was driven off the showroom floor. Interesting note aside, the rear springs were starting to sag, and my mechanic put 1/2 inch spacers and it gave the car the perfect stance. It raises the back end just enough to the rear sits higher and if I were to put a heavy load, instead of sagging, it would just straighten out. I just love the way this car sits like this. I think you could see the rear end lifted ever so slightly here in this video. Great advice man!

I worked for the Z-Nation television show and after the last season had ended I purchased the all blue Lincoln Mark V Diamond Jubilee edition that had been used in season 5. I cleaned the fake blood off the front and put the grill back in and straightened out the bumper (We had removed it and then bolted it back on crooked to make it appear to have run over a zombie). It's no creampuff but it is complete and the interior is in remarkably good condition. I was sent out to purchase it from a lady that had purchased it from a storage facility where the original owner had parked the car for 12 years and the guy had put seat covers on the front and back seats probably when it was new so they were pretty cherry. It had buckets and a center console but it had a column shift. You want to talk about long hoods?! It's a work in progress. Thanks for making this video.

I've had the pleasure of driving one of these and I loved it. True, it wasn't quick and most DHL vans would probably accelerate faster than the Mark V, but I didn't care... I was lost in a 70s fantasy, surrounded by beautiful leather and lots of soft padding as I glided past other cars. All I wanted at that moment was an 8-track cassette with some old Elvis songs and some Beatles. I love the opulence of the old American cars starting from the mid 50s, all the way to the 70s. It was a time of celebration, a time for luxury cars, tailfins and incredible beauty. In Europe in the 60s and 70s, most cars were aimed towards efficiency and only the very rich could afford fancy Mercedes and BMWs... Everyone else drove around in a rubbish car and stuff such as electric windows, power mirrors and air conditioning was only reserved for the very rich... Especially in Eastern Europe that was plagued up until the 90s with soviet garbage.

As a Brit, I've always found something to admire and adore in seventies Land Yachts; Lincoln's and Cadillac's especially. Yes, they didn't handle well, were strangled by emissions regulations, had squishy suspension, were a celebration of the synthetic and were conspicuous consumption incarnate, but they were also products of their time. They were simple, and that's all you really wanted. Just lashings of comfort and style that made you feel like you deserved the car you were driving. It was uncompromising and unapologetic, and I feel that this brashness is what gives it appeal. :)

Back then, my buddy and I could buy Sears extra heavy duty shocks for about $20 each install them on those cars and they made an immediate difference. And they lasted forever. The cars came from the factory with shocks so soft, they acted like worn out when new. I never understood why they did that. you needed stiff shocks to keep all that weight under control.....

In 1974My Dad bought a Cartier MKIV for my mom. I drove it from Waco to Dallas a few times before joining the Navy. This car was the quietest auto I have ever driven ! The interior was the best for an interstate trip. It ate potholes,railroad crossings and the occasional critter with aplomb all the while sucking up fuel from it's massive gas tank! I have owned Mercedes autos for the last 25 years . I have experience with many of today's luxury autos and NONE quieter or handle American roads better than the MarkIV.. The Lexus LS series come close.They have many of the same characteristics of the MarkIV without the insatiable thirst and yards of paint to clean and polish. The MarkIV was kept for 6 years by mom and did 3 cross country trips and served her well. Apart from routine service the car suffered no major repairs or failures.

aerodynamics of a buffet table, lol, got that right!! combine that with the 460 big block and you get an amazing 9 MPG... LOL. however that car drives so smooth

Peter- What is you say it true 'in the city', but not on the highway. I owned a '75 Mark (460) and she'd reliably deliver 18 mpg freeway

@@mark_osborne curious what speed you drive. in my case, doing 80+ mph the engine ripping at 4000+ rpm I get some crappy fuel economy... its much better if its a "city highway" thats a 65mph limit but I mostly drive road trips to events and interstate speed is 80 mph
@mark_osborne5 жыл бұрын
@@crazypete3759 My '75 Mark had a rear end ratio that was less than 3:1 (2.76 if my memory is correct). Given that, with 27 inch high tires lets do the math. (27 x 3.14) divided by 12 = 7.065 feet per revolution. There are 5280 feet in a mile, so divide 5280 by 7.065 and we find the tires go around 747 times in 1 mile. Multiply that times the rear end ratio of 2.76 and we discover the output shaft of the transmission is turning 747 x 2.76 = 2061 RPMs at 60 MPH. Because it's a 3 speed non-lockup converter, we must add about 5% for converter slip, so 2061 x 1.05 = 2164 crankshaft RPM at 60. To calculate RPM at 80 we simply multiply the RPM at 60 by 80 and divide by 60. So, (2164 x 80)/60 = 2885. And to answer your question, our speed limit back then was 55 but I'm sure I drove at least 70 as most people did. BTW, full size Cadillacs of that era also returned about 18 MPG on the freeway. Ask around, you'll find out it's true. What are you driving that gets bad mileage at 80 MPG ?

Thanks--nice car! Great video! I was fortunate enough as a new driver at 18 to pilot my ailing neighbor's 1973 Lincoln Continental Mark IV, Cartier trim, and her trade up, a 1987 Lincoln Town Car. Both rode well but the Mark IV was best riding and sure-footed hands down, had plenty of umph with the 460. These cars were built to tow, least we forget.

Great production and background work. Growing up, Frank Canon had one in the Canon series. He was a large man and couldn't really move too fast. So, my brother and I joked when he took the bad guy down one time by using the immense door on his Mark V as a weapon to knock the culprit out.

I’m selling one exactly like this, it doesn’t look like this one but it’s in good conditions. I live in Illinois. If somebody is interested reply here and I send my phone number. This car have been in auto shows and has a lot of first place trophies.🏆

I graduated high school in 1979 and after spending almost two weeks partying and hanging out in Myrtle Beach, SC I returned home to spend just enough time at to do laundry, repack and then off to NJ/NY to hangout with my sister in NYC and spend a couple of weeks at my friend's mother and stepfather's house in Brown's Mill NJ. His mom and stepfather had matching 1979 Lincoln Continental Designer Editions - Bill Blass for him and Givenchy for her. We tooled around in those things all over mid Jersey, the beaches, Philly, Atlantic City and into NYC to see my sister. They were BIG and floaty luxurious, both optioned out with everything (including credit cards and gas cards to keep them full of gas) and we cruised everywhere in them listening to the Moody Blues, Pink Floyd and REO Speedwagon on the fabulous 8 track stereos and smoking so much weed. These cars turned heads everywhere we went (we valeted them in Atlantic City, NYC and Philly) not to mention we were teenagers driving them around. They were beautiful cars! That was an amazing summer and this video brings all of those memories back!

This is a very well done and accurate piece. It's obvious you took the time to do some research and get the facts about this car reported correctly while having the humility to tell its story relative to the time these cars were built and sold.

I daily drove a 1981 Lincoln Continental Mark VI for almost two years, there's many people that said it just didn't compare to the Mark V's, but it was only 1 foot shorter, it is still a big car and every bit as luxurious. Mine had plenty of features, all of which still worked, except for the auto off headlight delay. Easily comparable to the Mark V and still an excellent car, aside from fuel mileage. Even with the Overdrive transmission, I still only got 14-15 mpg doing 55, while my 72 Mercury Marquis Brougham gets 17mpg doing 55, from a 429 big block.
@AutoMoments6 жыл бұрын
It's confusing as to why the Mark V was so popular but the Mark VI, which was better in many ways, wasn't as popular. It must be one of those "untagible" things. Either way, thanks for sharing your Mark VI memories and thanks for watching!

@@AutoMoments In my humble opinion the V's sheer size is enough to draw people to it. Be it, the attention is gets is negative, or positive. Full sized cars that I've observed always got more attention. When the 1986 Sable came out, a brand new one was parked downstairs and man this car drew crowds.

@@xrmerkur I see you're lucky enough to have one with the 351, mine had the 302 and it was really not powerful and when you were in Overdrive on the highway, it would take forever to get up to speed. Mine had plenty of options, the usual power seats and windows, Keypad on the door to unlock the doors and open the trunk without a key, auto off headlights, auto high beam dimmer, sunroof, AC, probably some others I can't remember as I sold it about 7 months ago, to buy a 72 Mercury Marquis. But all of that and mine still had the Analog instrument cluster instead of the digital one
@V8_screw_electric_cars6 жыл бұрын
@@AutoMoments Mark VI was sad because it was same just downsized, mark VII was popular again because it had new styling and more power so being small wasn't dissapointing, it was an advantage.

Living in the UK makes owning and driving these cars a challange. Ever since i watched Frank Cannon driving one, i wanted one despite the issues of ownership. I had to wait until the early 80's before an Amercan car specialist imported one, and best of all it was in the same shade of blue. So with my heart ruling my wallet, i went to see it. and it was huge, way longer than any other car they had in stock, but once i sat into those seats and drove it, the refinement won me over. The salesman did warn me to go back home and check that it would fit my driveway, i had already measured it, and it fitted with 2 feet to spare at both ends, getting it on and off the drive was the difficult part. I wish i still had it, but the sheer size and running costs in the UK forced me to sell it for a Mustang V8 after two years. Even today they look stunning, and the refinement was hard to beat. If you have the space, buy one before they become too rare in good condition.
