Growing up we had a 4430 and 2 4630's. We used the 4430 for everything, you name it. It was used for our 15' batwing mower, feed hammermill, pulling grain wagons, EVERYTHING. Our 4630's were used for field work and our honey wagon and that was basically it.

I agree with you Travis, some jobs you just need a small tractor, like for mixing feed, I have a 4440 with a powershift that in the winter that's what runs the feed wagon. However, once the weather starts getting warmer it gets switched to our row crops and a 4030 with a synchro gets put on the feed wagon. Now, for our operation this works as we have 2 4030s, 2 4240s with identical loaders, and 1 4440, now my dad always likes to keep his equipment divided like you say with smaller daily operations machines and the larger heavy farm equipment, a 4450, 4850, (2) 8300s, and an 8420 to do tillage, planting, and the smaller of the 5 take care of running the round baler and the disc mower. Now, we also have exceptions to the rule where like this year for one day we put a 8300 on the disc mower thinking we would cut hay with it while the 4850 went to get a steering leak fixed, but when the 8420 broke a double knuckle u-joint in the front end, it got its duals back on and went on our field cultivator and the 4850 is on the disc mower yet until further notice. Rounding back to the point, having essentially two lines of machinery makes sense, when you've got jobs that need a smaller tractor, you probably shouldn't overpower the job, especially on sensitive machinery like a grinder mixer, and I think the simplest way my dad ever put it to me was, "if you have a piece of machinery, and something is wrong, what's gonna give first a big tractor, or the obstacle?" Anyways, loved the video and wanted to share my two cents, have a great day!🙂

Sounds like some folks think the term "Chore Tractor" is a derogatory term. Every machine has its purpose and every farm is different. In my opinion the 4440 is a great all around machine. We had two 4430s and a 4440 and used them for every task on the farm. Thanks for the post!

My Grandpa bought a John Deere 4440 brand new in 1979 he traded it off in 1994 for a 7800. our 4440 was our biggest tractor back in the day. I think the 4440 is 145 hp I think. I definitely agree you guys should get a 4440 instead of putting hours on your big tractors for you guys we would look at your big tractors and for our operation they would be really small

I see and understand your explanations for the different uses for the tractors and why you do that. Yes a 4640 could actually be considered overkill for say running a grain auger, where as the 4020 would be way to small to run, say, the chisle or the earthmaster. And your right, as times change so do your needs. To me, you have the tractors matched to each particular job that you do thruout the year and nothing seems to be overkill to this or that job that it does. Your explanation for doing what you do and why you do makes sence.....

For one lets not under cut the versatility of the 1982 transition years. We are looking at a horse power bump in the 4500, 4700, and some other series models of the "large frame" chasis of this similar size. The 4640 could be setup with a variety of row crop tire configurations. It was capable of 178 horse power factory, and was very easily a work horse tractor for small farms of 200 acres up to 500 acres. Respectably it was a versatile tractor with the front loader and narrow tire configurations to work a bale, transport equipment at top gear range (quad range transmission) and over all was a comfortably sized tractor for medium to heavy operating load conditions. With a dual rear setup the traction was capable to work in sandy conditions without concern. The front end with a "wide track" float tire was quite easy to support the extra weight dispersion. You could easily ask of the 4640 on level ground the same operational capacity of some of the higher horse power tractors in the 210 range. The quick hitch setups that were used made the rear 3 point a very adaptable tractor as well. Putting on extra front weights with the frame made it still reliable for a drill in tight spaces to keep fence to fence seed coverage of little concern. By 1982 the additional models coming into the scene would start bringing more electronics, monitors, and equipment for the new age into the fore front. That is the point when the 4640 goes from versatile tractor to in hindsight chore ready.

@@Masseyman-nv2kl To produce 225 hp from that 4640 JD 466 ci engine would not be practical for a farm tractor. It would need to have air to air after cooling and run 2500 rpm and roll coal with its Robert Bosh injector pump. Then on a warm day the engine would over heat. Too bad Travis did not go to college and learn some engineering.
@Masseyman-nv2kl
@Masseyman-nv2kl 5 жыл бұрын
Robert Reznik why are you trying to make yourself sound big? They don't need to air to air cooling as they've not tuned to hell. You don't need to be an engineer to turn a pump up. We have farmers here with JD 6330p's 6430's 6600 series and my friend how has a JD6620p and its producing 180hp from factory and they've tuned them 50hp plus sometimes. As long as you properly mix the air to fuel you will have no problem.

Call me crazy, but a lot of these considerations are highly relative to the size and power of the fleet you have and the current and future needs of the operations. If, for instance, you owned a 9R, the 4640 would seem small, even though it was the biggest thing you had prior to 2014. My uncles' biggest tractor is a Case IH 7210, which is not big on the grand scale, but it is enough for their operation's heaviest tasks. They are stable with regard to the number of acres they run and shrinking in dairy herd size. Kuster Farms, on the other hand, is growing in acres as well as the overall cattle herd. Thus, what is "big" to you now will eventually be underpowered (8235R) and close to the middle of the fleet designation, and the 7600 and 4640 will be, by default, close to "chore tractor" status. Go back to when Dwight joined the operation decades ago, and the 4020 was the "big" tractor at that point. It's all relative and somewhat subjective.

Your family's operation went from a primary dairy farm to a crop farm with more acres. Having worked for a couple of dairy farmers with 4440s and one had a 4640 that spent most of its time parked in the shed due to PTO@1000. Chopping pulling large 6 axle boxes and V plowing was it's only use. Your needs have changed and as your implements increase in size so will your power up front.

Travis when you mentioned the 4640 made 220 HP I didn't recall that as the correct HP. Quick check on Tractorhouse showed the model HP from 150 (low) to 174 HP. Think the 174 HP is closer. Thanks for the HP explaination. Guess that makes sense with the smoke at startup. Runs a bit rich at first maybe. I owned a Case 2290 years ago that showed 173 HP on the dyno. That was sold to me new but something was different. Rated was around 140 hp. I pulled a Case 6- 18's on land plow with a buster bar. 12 front weights, loaded inside duals. Pulled it in tough soils without issues. I didn't have the smoking issues though. Nothing like HP.

Our biggest tractor is a Massey fergie 3080 what is 110hp but then got a fegie 6170 engine in it that at dyno had 120 but lost a few ponies over the years. Then we have a fergie 390 with a loader what is our chore tractor with 80hp. Some people here in Scotland say that Americans pit to much hp on smaller jobs. In my opinion it's true to an extent. As you have that wheel rake that the 4020 could run. Or the bale carrier. We have a 28ft marshal bale trailer and get 20/30 bales on it depending on the stacker getting pulled by our 3080. But if you want to put more hours on a bigger investment it's up to you just my opinion.
