The interesting point not really covered is why these places that "charge us only a few dollars for food" are making so many billions. The quality is low, and the price for that food is high, they are making high profits on selling mass produced garbage. Try making this food at home from a store and you'll be surprised how much cheaper and healthier it is. Fast food eateries screw everyone over for that fat, sugar and salt addiction.

@HandersonDTjia
@HandersonDTjia 4 жыл бұрын
I think that's the best case for the restaurant owner. You gain enough popularity, people know you, and they go to this place regularly. Then when the license's off, you can open a ripoff where loyal customers and regular customers will still go to the same place and same owner, just a different brand. At least, that's what works for the restaurants at a less crowded place where I live. I don't know if the same should work, let's say on the downtown areas in the cities.

@@milosilic23 do you mean that in some countries, noncompete clauses like that would be illegal? Because I'm not sure if any country or trade bloc has any such laws. Absent any law prohibiting such a clause, it would be a matter of each individual contract. And since power does not reside equally on either side of the table in these negotiations, I'd suspect such clauses would be common if not universal. [note: I'm a word processor at a corporate law firm but not specifically dealing with this sort of thing, so I'm generally familiar with how companies & rich people do things, but haven't looked at many franchise agreements. FWIW.]

@KOKOBC
@KOKOBC 3 жыл бұрын
Everyone: they brought the 5$ foot long back lol! Me: the reason why it came back is because food is getting cheaper since farmers can’t find a way to sell the food anymore because schools, and most restaurants are still closed. This means that sourcing materials is now cheaper, so subway might actually be making a profit. Also, notice how they say you have to buy two at a time? Well this is because the profit margin is probably very low, so in order to be able to make enough money to pay rent and stuff, they have to sell two at a time. You probably didn’t read this whole thing but if you did, now you know.

The actual cost of making a footlong sandwich on average in around $2.50, so they are plenty profitable. The issue is they sell far fewer sandwiches than somewhere like McDonalds, which have thinner profit margins but sell way more product. Plus Subway has very strict franchise rules and restrictions which limit the power of its franchisee's to generate revenue.

My dad was a Jimmy John's franchisee. He sold the store after Jimmy John's started their new policy of "clustering", which meant opening as many stores as possible in a single area. When he first opened the store in our town, they told him our town wasn't big enough for a store. After about nine years of running it, my dad made the store very successful. Then they were suggesting our town was big enough for two stores. So my dad sold it (to another man who knew the risk). After the other Jimmy John's opened less than a mile away, our business was at least cut in half. I worked for the new owner for about a year and then found another job. Sadly, a few months after I quit, the new owner shut down the store, eating his losses. Jimmy John's also doesn't care about their franchisees, but apparently the changed their policy on "clustering" right after the new store was opened in our town because of the huge backlash from franchisees and this policy apparently hurt their ability to sell their brand.
