@Forget x NumenAlpha Turning radius doesn't matter very much in modern dogfights because you almost *never* use the guns, it's basically all missiles. There would be no "overshooting" an A-10 on a dive as most fights between planes take place *miles* apart from one another. Look, the A-10 is badass and I love it, but it has next to no chance of shooting down a remotely competent fighter.

I'm an A-10 technician and work on these everyday. The issue is that since we are no longer fighting in the middle east, the A-10 is no longer assigned a mission. The Air Force has also unfortunately been trying for years to get rid of it to free up money to continue modernizing the F-35 which will eventually replace the A-10 even though it has nowhere near the same capability. The Air Force has done this in the form of cutting contracts that make A-10 parts. When parts go bad, there's very little to go around now so it's become increasingly harder and harder to maintain them. Some of them are just being sent to the boneyard because they need new wings but we don't have any more wings to replace them. If I had to guess, all of these will be gone by 2030. They're slowly getting retired one by one.
@jjhh320
@jjhh320 Жыл бұрын
Until we suddenly need it again. I seem to recall the Air Force being incredibly confident that missiles made the guncannon irrelevant, and everyone bought into that infallible, logical thinking with the F4 Phantom. The F-35 is questionably average at everything it does, but it's advanced and technological so that by perception makes assume its effectiveness. Militaries do this kind of stuff all the time, and of course our generation would so fittingly consider ourselves above repeating the pattern...just like all of the other people who've repeated such logic

@@jjhh320 missiles in the late 60-early 70s are far less advanced than missiles of today. Today missiles are more reliable than back then and more agile. Guns are mostly useless on modern fighters. The dogfight is dead and the missile reigns supreme.

In a war I'd want the reassurance of being supported by a sturdy and reliable aircraft over a high tech jack of all trades that might not even want to start if the computer decides it doesn't want to accept the pilot's password. If the F-35;s computer decides to say "No", it's literally a _very_ expensive paperweight, oh, and target practice for an enemy fighter-bomber in a war! It's why I think retiring the Tornado was a dumb idea, the Tornado, like the A-10, was a master of ground attacking.

The P-47 Thunderbolt was the original Thunderbolt, which was often nicknamed the "Jug", because of the appearance and because of the survivability. The Thunderbolt was usually used to bomb things, as it could fit three big bombs on it, and even free-fire rockets. Due to this, when the A-10 came around, and was made into a powerful, tough attacker, it was named the Thunderbolt II, to commemorate the original CAS plane of the USM.

There's no such thing as Soviet "T-74s" and there was no such engagement in the Fulda Gap in November 1983. Most modern jets don't even use 20mm anymore. 420 mph (~676 kph) is slow and renders it as easy food for any modern jet or jet at its time of introduction. Air superiority is an overstatement if it's solely A-10s or if they're in a modern battleground. Wherever you got your information or sources from, some of them are far from right.

The A-10 is my favorite plane in our arsenal. However, it is most definitely not invincible. This plane is almost always escorted by fighter Jets because it is a sitting duck for enemy SAMs. It is great at dog fights and absorbing bullets/shells. However, I can’t see it absorbing a stinger or tomahawk. They excel at taking out enemy tanks because enemy tanks are also slow to target and slow to move. The reason our soldiers are relieved to hear the A-10 is because it is a sign that we own the sky which is a key step to winning any war.

Doesn't matter that it can take more damage when other aircraft are far less likely to take any damage in the first place. A-10 is a slow, low, easy target for even the most basic of air defenses.
