Hi friends! Today, I’m discussing the myth of writing for an audience and why it’s BS. Inspired by Rick Rubin's philosophy, I believe in creating art for yourself, not others. Art should be like a personal diary entry, driven by intrinsic motivation. When we write for an audience, it becomes commercial and loses authenticity. Let’s focus on what truly inspires us. Share your thoughts and what art inspires you!

You know what else doesn’t matter- but I hate when they do it anyway? When other actors on the set give notes to other actors. We’re doing a show right now and I cannot focus on the show with all these notes being given. Some people are super perfectionists and want everything to go well, and others are not. I’m one who just does what he can until proven otherwise because of notes given by the creative team. If you are not the director, choreographer, vocal coach, or anyone else on the crew- kindly do us the favor and save your criticisms. It’s okay to mess up! It’s live theatre for god sake! Let the mistakes happen- because you can go into the next and do an even better job than last time.

Yup!! Actors shouldn't tell other actors how to "act". Creates discord among the company and relationships with each other!!!

Thank you! I hate shows that put the audience first and artistic value second. Not for nothing, but it also makes it feel like the people behind those kinds of shows are really more or less pandering to their audiences because they know that they're just going to be watching regardless because money. And not gonna lie, it's why I have a distaste for Once On This Island. If that show's message of "you are why we tell the story" isn't enough of a red flag. I don't what is. And side tangent, that show also just brings back really bad memories for me. I did that show in 2018, and I dislocated my knee during a rehearsal. The doctor had real concerns that my ACL could've been torn, and I was looking at a bad leg surgery if it was. I count my blessings that it wasn't torn, but they still had me do six weeks of physical therapy. So yeah. Once On This Island brings back some pretty horrible memories for me.

You’re literally the best person ever, also I completely agree with this, as someone who’s trying to write more and writing a play or poems more about things I’ve experienced I had a block because I was worried about this. Now I can let go of that ❤

What people don't understand is that humans relate to good human stories. That's it. No one needs to 'see themselves' in immutable characteristics. That's not why we relate to others at ALL. We relate to emotion and struggles and triumphs and adventures and beauty. People who just write about the human condition from a place of passion and wanting to make something beautiful regardless of who else enjoys it usually write the best stuff. You know a writer is going to be mediocre if they make everything about identity and pandering. It will never work. The market is voting right now on the garbage being pushed out there and its not going well. Stop caring who you might piss off or who may or may not like what you have to say. Write what you WANT to write, not what you think everyone else thinks you should write. Also how did you end up filming in the closet??? LOL!

If art and commerce don't mix, why do theaters use prerecorded tracks rather than hiring live musicians. In your previous video you stated that it was "too expensive" to hire live musicians. Which is it? If the ART is the primary objective, the theater would pay for the live musicians.

It could be both. The decision to use tracks vs. live musicians in my last video was not one I made. It was on the theatre that signs the checks that make those decisions.

Could you have taken a stand by refusing to work with a theater that's only interested in the "bottom line" rather than the artistic integrity and enriching the human spirit by using live musicians? @@KevinLynchNJ

I could, but whether it's me music directing or someone else, they are going to use tracks regardless. To be honest... that's the way a lot of musicals are going. And most concerts today use tracked music. Taking a stand against it won't change it.

I respectfully disagree. Taking a stand against music tracks WILL be the start of change. If no one agrees to work with tracks, (theaters, actors, musicians, tech staff, etc.) the tracks would immediately disappear. My degrees are in harp, and my telephone rings off the hook to play for various gigs. Granted, I only play union gigs. But, it's not like there are tons of harp players "out there" to do the job. The jobs are "out there" for competent, professional musicians. It's the avocational musicians and the third-tier "wanna be" musicians that give music the bad reputation is has in community theaters. @@KevinLynchNJ
