Why the B-Wings Were (Mostly) Removed from Return of the Jedi

Why don't we get to see many shots of the B-Wing in Return of the Jedi? Why is it still an underrated starfighter to this day? Here is the behind the scenes reasoning!

B-Wing is Best Wing. The B-Wing is a brute. Designed to take on capital ships. It's the A-10 of the SW universe. It's my favorite SW ship. I loved playing the B-Wing expansion for the old LucasArts X-Wing game.

From my understanding the in lore reasons for the relative scarcity of the B-wing are a parallel to the IRL reasons: Technical difficulties, the ship was difficult and costly to produce/maintain and so the rebels simply didn't have huge numbers of them. Also, yeah, thing was one hell of a brute, mostly because the systems it was made from were designed for corvette class ships, not strike craft... they put them in Empire at war and suddenly I wanted to use whole fleets of them, they're just nasty.

I preferred the Y-Wing as its armament configuration made for a better weight of fire on a maneuvering target and it turned a little better. B-Wing was more than adequate but only in uncontested airspace. The best tactical fighter on the Alliance side was the X-Wing by far.

@@Boppinabe The Y Wing is more of a traditional F/A ship. The B Wing was designed to take on capital ships. It's meant to be flown with escorts (A-Wings). So in that regard, it's an A-10 which relies on CAP fighters to keep the airspace clean while it does ground attacks. In the old X-Wing game, the B-Wing turned like an oil tanker and weren't designed to dogfight anything smaller than an Imperial Missile Boat. I "could" dogfight, but relied on it's heavy shields and armor to absorb the many hits it got while it spun around to destroy TIEs. The amount of guns it had made it lethal to anything caught in front of it.

@@seiglegar In X-Wing, there was nothing more satisfying than flying a B-Wing toward a Nebulan Class B Frigate or a Star Destroyer and taking out the individual systems pass after pass, peeling away its defenses until to killing blow.

I was obsessed with this ship as a kid in the 90s. I had one of the Kenner toys and it is seriously one of the coolest ship toys ever. Still sits proudly in my office to this day.

My brother and I had the toy in 1984. It was neat but I can't say we did a lot with it, because it was kind of awkward to play with. I have a more recent version but it's white and was from the old EU comics. It's cool, though.

I have to say when Episode 7 came out and we only got X-Wings I was real disappointed. I was really hoping we'd get more interesting ships in the sequels but they were a bit unimaginative with that aspect of the art direction imo.

Yeah as a ship junkie, the ST was massively disappointing in that aspect. For the Rebels its just X Wings and for the Empire its just standard TIEs. Even when they introduced other TIE variants in the later two movies, it was just another Interceptor.

Yeah, that's one thing I wish JJ Abrams had focused less on for the nostalgia feels. With the New Republic in full swing, it would've been nice to see starship innovation in the 30 years since the civil war. But they did also explain that the Republic had de-escalated the military to promote peace, so the Resistance had to scrounge together older fighters to fill out their ranks.

I remember when I first watched Rise of Skywalker in theaters and got all excited when I noticed the B-Wings. They're incredibly underrated and underused, hope it'll change one day.

In 6 we only saw the B-wing in a few shots. Never up close or in action In Rebels we only saw it once and it was a prototype. Never brought up afterwards making it one of the many wasted opportunities. In 9 we finally saw the Mark 2 but JJ forgot the original design was in the last 2 films and created a continuity error and like 6 it was just in a handful of shots with no more major screen time. When George was tweaking the OT he should have included more B wing scenes. Nobody would complain about that. Rebels should have given us the final one and included them at Attalon 9 should have shown us the new one up close and shown it in action This ship is so neglected

Considering that Lucas' justification for the added effects in the OTSEs was "I was making those films like they shouldve been from the start if technology had let me", it really makes you wonder why he didnt put the B-Wings in digitally since he obviously tried to put them in the first time in 83.

Was very disappointed in 1997 when they didn't feature additional B-Wing shots in the ROTJ: Special Edition. Seeing a B-Wing squadron take down a Star Destroyer would have given more weight to the Rebel fleet surviving for so long against the larger Imperial Navy, thats backed up by the 2nd Deathstar.

Thinking back on it now, I'm surprised George didn't ask for some shots in Return of the Jedi to be edited to have B-Wings put in digitally, but perhaps those shots were already crowded enough as is, not to mention the Battle of Endor (both on the ground and in space) is one of the greatest battles in Star Wars, it really doesn't need tweaking.

I was really hoping when the Special Editions were released in the late 90s that Lucas was going to add to the space battle at the Battle of Endor, primarily the B-Wings. And I was quite annoyed that he didn't add anything to the space battle at all. But I get it now. The reason he didn't was because that space battle for 1983 was legendary. And it's still the best scene in Star Wars today.

Man, I was shocked and happy to see B-Wings in the Rise of Skywalker teaser. I mean, I wasn't expecting them to be a focus on the final battle, but I'm grateful that they weren't completely forgotten in the sequel trilogy. My first real experience with them was the Balance of Power expansion to X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter, and I've loved it ever since.

Here's a headcanon for you: The B-wing was _too_ advanced for the Rebellion to field effectively in large numbers. For every one we see on screen, three or four others are grounded with technical issues that are just _expensive_ to fix.

That's actually semi-canon. According to a few versions of the _Guide to Vehicles and Vessels_ the B-Wing's rotational device (which allowed the wing assembly of the fighter to rotate around the cockpit) was prone to breakage, which made the ship significantly less maneuverable.

I remember when they were hyping up the SEs, they had Tazos showing scenes from the original films but special versions to tease the newer effects. One of them depicted B-Wings blowing up a Star Destroyer, which had me excited for ROTJ having that addition. Yet, it didn’t come to pass. 😔

I saw a print of ROTJ in 1983 at the midnight premiere that had b-wing footage of a b-wing flying directly at the camera and the cockpit rotating so you could see the little pilot guy inside.That version also had more ewok stompage under the feet of the AT-STs. Of course, I've never been able to confirm what I saw was not a hallucination.

People LOVE the B-wing. When "Star Wars Squadrons" released, two-thirds of the posts on the subreddit were about wanting the B-wing and TIE Defender added to the game. When people first start playing "Star Wars X-Wing: The Miniatures Game" (before they know what they like from a gameplay/mechanical perspective) they very often collect B-wings. I know I did!

I recall that at the time of the RotJ original release a merchandizing commercial showed a tiny tiny snippet showing a couple of B-wings carrying out a flat turn over the surface of the DS. I suppose it was to show off the rotating cockpits on the B-wing, but it did look odd as traditionally SW fighters bank. It was definitely not in some very early version of the film and dropped afterward (I did see it opening day). I thought it might be for the commemorative fast food glasses, but the few of those commercials I've seen on YT don't show that clip. Who knows, there were a lot of commercial tie ins when these movies came out.

Even in the books they were a rarity, there were only 1 or 2 squadrons of them from memory, and those pilots were known as Elite's and were a little pompous because of it. But when they entered a battle, they did the most devastating of damage and nearly exclusively went after the biggest ships, defence stations and mostly shipyards.

The B-wing was always my favorite star fighter growing up, it always reminded me of my favorite plane the P-38. It's too bad the new canon pretty much destroyed it by making it a slow bomber instead of an attacker. Squadrons managed to almost redeem it, but it still shouldn't be a bomber.

When I was 10 years old and in love with the Star Wars films I could never figure out how the B-Wing got it's name as all the other rebel fighters seem to be named after their physical likeness to the letter. It's only just now, as a 37 year old man, I'm realising that the first two fighters were called X & Y, and the two new ones being introduced in Jedi were called A & B.

In the X-Wing games, the B Wing was my least favorite fighter. Those vastly separated blasters made it feel really difficult to actually hit anything, and I much preferred the closer together blasters of the Y wing and A Wing, and at least the X wing blasters could make predicable patterns to shoot things.

Filoni's movie will probably feature a fair amount of them. Plus, The Last Jedi gave us a descendant in the StarFortress dedicated bomber -- why they haven't called this the T-Wing bomber I'll never know; Legends doesn't need to own the T-Wing name -- in addition to the B-Wings featured in TROS. I won't be surprised to see it more. Its legacy lives on.

B-wing fighters and the alien and female pilots they had originally filmed for RotJ were what should have been added back into the film for the special editions instead of Jedi Rocks. Seems like a missed opportunity. There was supposed to be a sequence where several B-wings take down a Star Destroyer (they had Ralph McQuarrie concept art for it). Would have been cool to see that.

We did see the destructive power of the B-wing in Return of the Jedi. When Akbar is saying, concentrate all firepower on the Superstar Destroyer. There is a normal Star Destroyer exploding in the Shot. That was destroyed by a flight of B-wings.

The Bwing as a fighter makes more sense than as a bomber. If you actually compare it to other ships, It's actually smaller than the Xwing. It's 17m long compared to the Xwing's 9m. But the Xwing is 14m wide while the Bwing is only 3m. The Bwing has one large engine compared to the 4 medium engines of the Xwing. The long nose of the Xwing houses the tracking, cooling, torpedoes, etc. Behind the cockpit is power generation and a slew of other things. The Bwing has....frankly it has to stuff all of that into those fairly thin wings. Two small torpedo launchers are located in the neck below the cockpit but that's it for bombs. Even the Y-wing has a large area where functions are stored and that ship is fairly beefy. Don't even get me started on retconning it to be like a mini-Death Star. Where is it getting it's power? It has two heavy blasters on its Sfoils and one large on the bottom compared to the 4 mediums on the Xwing. For all intents and purposes, it would have made more senses as a fighter than a bomber. It just doesn't have the room.
