The Bad Batch are an elite commando unit known for operating deep behind enemy lines. When engaging the enemy they usually are outnumbered and facing overwhelming odds. But somewhere around the end of the first season of The Bad Batch, the commandos began using non-lethal stun rounds in battle. Today we take a look at why.

I think they're increasingly realizing that they can "do more" for their brothers. I'm sure they're not delusional about freeing everyone but think of it from their perspective: every clone they fight is a slave that could potentially be rescued. They know about the chips, they know about defectors. And Regs or not, brainwashed or not, those are all still their brothers. Remember "We would have taken you back"? They're planning something. And the poor Captain in episode 2 is supposed to show us that they can succeed in that; looks like the bio chip is wearing off.

It doesn't make sense to me that the bio chip would "wear off". I think the turning point was Wrecker falling under the control of the inhibitor chip. Before that, the BB didn't really understand how powerful the chips' influence was. They just saw that the other clones were willing to kill them, so they had no problem returning the favor. After the incident on Bracca, they fully understood that the clones were not fully in control of their own thoughts, never mind their actions. The BB became much more sympathetic to the other clones, especially Echo and Omega, and decided to spare as many as they can. They are still killing clones where it's unavoidable, like the V-Wing pilots in the most recent episode. As for the TK Troopers on Mt. Tantiss, I don't think the BB stunned them because they didn't want to kill them. I think it was because they already had their blasters set to stun for the clones, and stunning the TKs was faster than switching to lethal.

But of course in the heat of combat, anything can happen, liek I don't think in S2 EP 2 a gunship was raining fire on them so Tech used a repeater canon to take it out, meanwhile 2 speeder bikes were zooming up and they were trying to get Omega and Hunter pulled up, Tech had no choice but touse the turret to shoot the speeders, which were already moving so fast that they and their troopers went falling over the cliff.

I'm also a supporter of generally not killing enemies if possible. Apart from that I believe that the concept of enemies is a purely temporary concept. Yes, today we will shoot at each other, but tomorrow we might be allied against a greater evil. Then there are the advantages that the lower one keeps one's side's violence, the less the other side feels it necessary to strengthen its means. And in the end it's pointless to kill foot soldiers anyway, nothing is more replaceable than human resources. So what the bad batch is doing makes strategic sense too, because if your opponents are aware that you're sparing their lives, they'll fight less intensely and may even reconsider their loyalty to their cause.

I’d like to recommend watching Geetsly’s video on why the Clone Troopers make for terrible Imperial Stormtroopers. He explains the The Bad Batch does not see Clone Troopers as evil. They were merely following orders even if those orders came from a totalitarian government. Also, those TK Stormtroopers were freshly recruited Imperial citizens who didn’t commit any evil actions yet. So from what I can tell, I believe The Bad Batch believed that it wouldn’t feel right for them to kill fresh recruits who didn’t do anything to deserve such a fate.

a possible reason as to using stun rounds on the TK troopers is that there was still a lot of unknowns at the time. though they were informed of who was beneath the armor. plus having to constantly switch back & forth would be too time consuming and distracting during their exfil. so they probably just focused their energy on escaping and using the stun rounds to avoid accidentally killing a clone. edit: but wrecker is wrecker. if he has a chance to smash or make something go BOOM, he's gonna take the opportunity and obluterate anyone trying to kill him, clone or not.

I'm not hugely familiar with blasters, but is it possible the stun uses less gas than normal blaster bolts? If so that could also be a reason why the Bad Batch uses stun a lot, so they don't use as much of their 'ammo'. After all they're not getting it for free from the Republic/Empire anymore so it's likely harder and more expensive for them to get.

One possible reason would be to better visually distinguish between the team's weapons fire and their opponents, either in-universe or out. In most Star Wars battles, different sides tend to use different colored blaster fire or light sabers so you'd get to see one side shooting red bolts and the other side using blue. But if the Bad Batch are just using their normal clone trooper weapons fighting other clone troopers, there's no reason they would switch the color of their weapons. So instead, they change the _shape_ of their blaster bolt. Instead of having a big fight where everyone is shooting blue bolts at each other, one side is shooting donuts. This helps give some visual distinctiveness to the protagonists during a big firefight, since one side's weapons fire is visually distinct from all the other weapons fire in the scene. I think this is especially useful for new viewers since so many characters are in armor. If someone just sees these scenes without context they might have trouble visually telling the bad batch from the regular troopers, but would be able to recognize their weapons fire being different.

I'm fully on board with the idea that the Bad Batch started favoring stun rounds because they feel the clone troopers are their brothers and going non-lethal is more morally in line with their interpretation of the situation and that bleeds over to rounds against non-clones. They see all troopers for the Empire as being victimized by the corropt leadership, even the conscript troopers. That's what I'm perceiving.

The way I see it, the Bad Batch know clones are quite tough. In most situations where the CF99 use stun rounds, they're escaping and don't have time to aim properly. If they hit clone troopers with blaster fire in the wrong spots and leave them barely wounded (for example, legs) some resilient troopers could pick themselves up and keep firing at the CF99. Whereas most troopers go down with at most 2 stuns, giving the CF99 ample time to escape before the troopers awake.

Do you think that the empire will put them on trial instead of killing on sight? I mean, the criminal record still matters: Limited resources mean you can not hunt down every escaped clone. Try to sabotage a death star and don't wonder why there is a new moon in the sky. Be a minor inconvenience to the over all operation? Not worth looking for those guys while loading a ship.

While the regs being their brothers explains why the Bad Batch stun them instead of killing them, that doesn't explain why they stunned Stormtroopers instead of just killing them. Every Stormtrooper they kill would deny the Empire a fresh recruit.

Maybe another theory could be that they don't want to put themselves on the empire's wanted list though the actions of murder therefore having bounty hunters coming after them so instead they spare the lives of the men of the empire to prevent being put on the wanted list by imperial officers and to minimize how many problems they have to deal with at once just a theory but to me it seems logical
@sarowie
@sarowie Жыл бұрын
I would assume that they are on the wanted list either-way, but there is a difference between smuggling death star plan on one droid and a minor inconvenience on the other clone. Meaning one level will cause a full on hunt, will the other only is a "neutralize on sight if it does not hinder the primary mission objective".

@@sarowie And if they are being hunted by fellow clones for now particularly, those fellow clones may be coming at them with less than absolute fanatical lethality when the Batch has been pointedly sparing _their_ lives. They can reduce the intensity AND the lethality of the likely response to them.

I thought stun rounds would've been less reliable than blasters simply because they're larger than regular bolts; when it comes to stun guns in the real world, in order for it to have any effect at all both probes need to be making contact with the person's skin, which is certainly doable but difficult at longer ranges and especially if they're moving, given they move slower than bullets. I don't see why a similar assumption can't be made for stun rounds, in that if only a part of the round makes contact with a person it has a reduced or no effect, since they're so much larger and get larger with range, and especially so since we've only ever seen a stun round completely envelope someone. Certainly we can't definitely say so as it hasn't been demonstrated but I don't think it's an unreasonable assumption.

I thought it was purely a "Hay, we're trying to keep the child safe, let's not make ourselves the most wanted in the empire and keep the body count low." And it probably came with other advantages, even though it sounds the same to me, stun a rounds are much quieter and are better for stealth, which they'll be doing a lot. I think I've seen someone in the comments mention they use less power and helps keep things cost efficient. Which I feel like creates plot holes in other parts of the star wars universe and removes some potential drama, but that's not the point. Lastly it gives the small moral perk. You don't have worry about having the consciousness of killing what is basically your brothers and being able to claim the ones you did kill were necessary for your survival, along with probably causing _less_ , repeat _less_ trauma to the kid you're dragging with you everywhere.

Probably not the first to point this out, but in season 2 when the odds become more stacked against Wrecker and Hunter, they do resort to more lethal means, i.e., Wrecker utilizing the cannon off of a separatist tank to blast out of a cornered situation. I'm pretty sure some of the troopers who were in Wrecker's blast path did not survive.

I think there's also a bit of saving ammo, I think I've read or heard somewhere that stun rounds take up less energy and gas. When you're on the run and can't readily re-arm without drawing attention from the Empire, it might be nice to conserve.

8:02 sparing many people makes the bad batch not as big of a priority. If they start chewing through all of your forces, you have to do whatever it takes to stop them simply so you can maintain unit strength and morale. If your units are just stunned but humiliated, it makes closer to a real nuisance than a existential threat

I'm thinking it may be logistical. The bad batch is completely cut off from reliable supply, and while they have really good, military grade weaponry, the fact is they don't have infinite ammo, the stun rounds, being less lethal, should at the very least be less taxing on the power pack and maybe even consume less tibana gas per shot, meaning the Bad Batch can remain in combat for longer periods of time, all the while not really suffering the downsides of the less lethal round, since they're usually in CQC anyways. Also Omega, they're probably using them because of Omega.

1. Stun rounds are cheaper and still pretty effective, 2. They are fine with killing but I assume they would prefer not too. 3. They dont want a bad influence on omega 4. Sometimes they have to take hostages and setting it to stun from the get go can lower the chances of mis fires

I agree with your assessment, but I also imagine there is a more practical reason for this... a less powerful round uses less tibana gas. For example, a DC-15A could fire 500 shots in low power mode, but only 300 on the high power setting. Remember, these guys aren't exactly rolling in credits. they don't yet have the financial backing of a larger rebel organization, so they have to save credits where they can

With the topic of Bad Batch in mind, in Rebels we see Rex, Gregor and Wolffe. Rex was helped out by Ahsoka, who removed his chip, and the explosion that Gregor suffered from no doubt fried that chip, resulting in the personality we know him currently for, however he wasn't able to be brainwashed like all the other clones, hence why he ended up getting locked up and Rex got the help of the Bad Batch to get him out. But then there's Wolffe. So far we haven't gotten really any info as to when he got freed of his control and joined up with Rex and Gregor. There could be a chance we may see that in season 2 for the series.

I think after what they went through with Wrecker when his chip finally took over they realized none of the clones might be acting on their own will, and we saw after braca they were using stuns. plus we saw Wrecker open fire on the TK troopers with zero damns given. something tells me when we get more TK cannon fodder its back to kill. as for this softening on gun violence I think that episode with Cody and Crosshair kinda shoots that argument in the foot (pun intended)
