As a young boy in the early 60's in the Philippines, most of my boy classmates (plus me, of course) practiced the opening and closing of the balisong. Most of us owned at least one and were taught by elder brothers, cousins, or uncles. Nobody really expected to be aggressive with one, but many of us carried one as a defense well into our teens. It was nothing really special, just practical.

The balisong was the rugged outdoors utility knife of choice of Filipinos before the Kabar knife appeared in the second world war. The original balisong knives are now super expensive! The cheapest I got to buy them was for P150 each. Now they are at least a P1000 each. How I wish I kept those I bought.

I thought it was illegal because it's a hidden weapon...kinda. I mean, I can flip a karambit or any other fixed blade knife just as well, but the balisong is the safer option. ANYBODY who knows of butterfly knives should avoid grabbing the bite handle - the people who banned them know NOTHING about knives and probably watched too many action movies from the 80s or 90s where gangsters used them because it looked cool.
@MyDirtyHobo9 жыл бұрын
+ShadyFoX #fuckgoogleplus Pay attention to the video. He points out why it got banned, and it's not a bad reason. You: "The people who banned them know NOTHING about knives and probably watched too many action movies".............. The real reason: People were stupid and hurting themselves with them. Too many hospital/emergency room visits in relation to them. There's a reason Butterfly Knives are so widely banned/restricted, and it's not because "the people who banned them know NOTHING about knives".
@f0xyLuv9 жыл бұрын
MyDirtyHobo Yeah, so why aren't guns banned in USA? Same fucking logic behind that, people are dumb as fuck and hurt themselves. People always were and will be dumb, there's no reason to ban something just because a bunch of idiots doesn't know how to use that thing. "Oh, some people hurt themselves, because they were riding motorcycles? Let's just ban motorcycles so nobody gets hurt." It's the same thing - people get hurt because they try to show off, even though they can't do something well enough to be safe. They hurt themselves, be it getting cut while flipping a balisong or dying in a motorcycle crash while trying to do a wheelie. In both cases people try to impress and end up hurting themselves. So why aren't motorcycles banned? More people get more severely injured, yet they aren't banned unlike butterfly knives.
@MyDirtyHobo9 жыл бұрын
ShadyFoX #fuckgoogleplus I think you need to do some real reading before you start spreading stupid online. Clearly you know nothing about laws, I'd suggest looking up the United States Bill of Rights. Guns are legal because of the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution. If you want to learn why you're so hilariously wrong, the internet provides the means to learn. Use your brain, find your answers.
@f0xyLuv9 жыл бұрын
MyDirtyHobo I don't live in America, I used that as an (apparently bad) example. All I'm saying is that you shouldn't ban something just because certain people have no idea how to use it. Motorcycles harm more people than balisongs do yet they aren't banned. I'm not saying they should be, but if we use the logic behind banning balisongs, almost everything should be banned. Banning something won't stop people from using it, it will just encourage them. Same thing with children and swearing - telling a kid to not use certain words makes him use them, because he thinks he's so cool and edgy.
@MyDirtyHobo9 жыл бұрын
ShadyFoX #fuckgoogleplus Balisongs(butterfly knives) don't hurt people because they're banned. And yes, banning them has largely stopped their use. Obviously there's people that still do use it, in many places they're "restricted" instead of banned. However, to compare a knife to a motorcycle is just stupid. Same thing with comparing it to telling kids not to swear. You're being stupid. With your logic, people never used butterfly knives prior to them being banned. And kids never swore prior to being told not to. Wrong. Don't be stupid. Back to the matter at hand. They are banned because they caused injuries. It is easy for someone who does knot know how to handle a butterfly knife to injure themselves with it. Of course, there are those that know how to use them. And of course, there were those that knew how to use lawn darts properly. Realistically, life doesn't change because they got banned. We're long past the time of it's relevance. If you want one, rather than bitching about it, go do some research about it. Clearly you don't know about the laws in your area: "I thought it was illegal because it's a hidden weapon...kinda.", so go learn about them. If you already have one, find out if there are laws that enable the carrying of it. Don't sit there like an ignorant child complaining about things you don't understand. Educate yourself, then come back and complain. It's quite simple.

So lets clarify a few things here. This knife is not "illegal" at all. These knives can easily be purchased, owned and sold in almost any state of the US. With certain permits dagger bladed versions can even be legally concealed and carried. Illegal in most people's understanding means = You cannot legally own, sell , manufacture, carry for protection, pick your teeth with it....this kind of knife, period. TheBsoBoy It's not illegal. Most of the trainers blades are made of aluminum and have a bunch of holes drilled into them.

where would you find a trainer butterfly knife in canada?
@CrimsonSkyz5009 жыл бұрын
AllPartOfThePlan100 Hmmm... :/ Well I found mine at Comic Con. The one in Winnipeg, it was 30 dollars and can be converted to have an actual knife blade on it. But I would say, knife stores. Like Cabela's, Whole Sale Sports, basically hunting stores. If you can't find them there, I would suggest looking for small knife businesses.

Very nice video as usual. One thing though; the Balisong is NOT illegal in the Philippines. I should know, I live in the Philippines. What IS illegal is the size. It doesn't matter what kind of knife you carry if the blade goes over 5 inches then your in trouble with the law. The part where kuya Doug said the reason for the Balisong being banned in those places is because people were getting stitches for playing with them; makes me wonder how they manage to do that. I mean I learned how to play with Balisongs, like all Filipinos here, no formal "training" per se, just by playing with it while hanging around with my friends. Got a few nicks but no cuts that needs stitches, and the Balisong I practiced on had the traditional hollow ground blade & very sharp. Think of a 5 inch straight razor blade with a sharp point.

Not in Michigan, we can legally carry these, as of 2017 these are now classified in the state as "folding knives", and under the same penal code all automatic switchblade knives were made legal for purchase and carry with the exception of double edged, non folding stabbing instruments (which the other falls under, those are a bit of a gray area).

Every single kid I knew (as kids, growing up in the 80's) that had a butterfly knife almost always had mental issues and prone to violence. I grew up around firearms, swords, even explosives, but almost all the people I knew with that stuff was like a normal "good guy". It was something specifically to do with the butterfly knife. The knives are legal where I grew up, just had to be under 6" to carry around. I am pretty sure it was this "image" of these "bad type" of characters and their association with these knives that did the knives in (made illegal), along with kids getting cuts all the time using them (as said in this video). (BTW, I don't know anything about current day and age of people and these knives. I am speaking very specifically about the 1980's in the USA, in the state I lived in, while I was growing up.)

Balisongs originate from the Philippines and are known as butterfly knifes in America because years ago the authentic name was unknown so they called them butterfly knifes. The design came from a French measuring tool bright to the Philippines years ago. The function of a balisong is to distract and intimidate your opponent by the constant motion of the knife. Vision is the sense most closely related to motion and the fast movement of the knife distracts the opponent as well as the sound of the metal which the opponent senses as danger and impacts their ability to stay confident. The balisong has many different actions and flipping forms but in a confrontation the main rollout is used to maintain control over the knife and its deployment. These knifes are a ingenious design allowing the blade to be contained within the handles of the knife and deployed with a quick action of the wrist. The practice of the balisong is a great art and gives hours of enjoyment and self control.
