I've heard lax compared to the queen in chess, and it feels apt. Blatantly stronger than everything around it, but you only get one, and there's a ton of nuance and skill in efficiently piloting it that helps focus the metagame in a healthy way. But even better, unlike a queen that is the same unit every time, you can get very creative with lax sets; two snorlaxes in gsc can share 0 moves while both being the optimal way of anchoring their teams.
@kilojuliet4 Жыл бұрын
Yeah you can run a ton of different snorlax sets and all of them have different checks and team strategies. If you don't know what the opponent's snorlax is, you cant switch ANYTHING into it safely, especially not your own snorlax, but once you've caught on to the set there's a number of different ways to respond to each. Not even niche picks, either - if youve got a consistent team you probably have the tools to play around it already in your team naturally, and you just have to figure out how to get them in. There's a ton of mindgames around guessing sets, too, cuz no team preview. You have to deduce their sets based on the teammates and moves they reveal, and they could always be bluffing one set just to explode on you.

Basically: If they ban Snorlax, Zapdos becomes broken. If they ban Zapdos, water types have no counters. If they ban water types such as Cloyster, Suicune and Starmie, ground types would dominate. It’s a domino effect that worsens the overall gaming experience. Hence, keep Snorlax in OU

It has nothing to do with balance or domino effects. The people who play Gen 2 simply don't want to play an OU meta without Snorlax. I think the key is to remember why tiering exists. It isn't so that no pokemon is overpowered or isn't used too much or anything else like thay. Tiering (and the various clauses) exists so that people have fun playing the game. Usually that coincides with removing the "have to have on your team" level pokemon, but in the much smaller pools of Gen I and II, that may not be the case.
@3eve0n Жыл бұрын

That’s perfectly fine too. Smogon having its own vote-based house rules is a positive thing. It only becomes a problem when they enforce it on others.
@kilojuliet4 Жыл бұрын
I think it's important to note WHY the "have to have it on your team" thing is boring - because you dont want your meta game to always be the same 6-8 pokemon doing exactly the same thing all the time. Snorlax is SUPER versatile in this meta. Theres a minimum of 5 different sets this thing runs on smogon, with an addendum about how while those 5 are probably the best there's situations where you might build somethimg completely different and be successful with it based on what the team you want to use is. The wild thing is that each of those sets plays completely differently, requiring and enabling different teammates and forcing different kinds of counterplay. Sometimes you want to get snorlax in and keep it in, sometimes you want to switch in and out through a battle to meet certain threats for your sweepers, sometimes you want to keep him secret and safe while you blow away his checks so he can fuckin belly-drum sweep. You could almost count "snorlax" as like 3 or 4 different pokemon for the purposes of how it interacts with the metagame, which is very different from a zacian that just swaps in and hits one move 6 times to win the game (hyperbolic I know).

See: the reason why Imposter remains unbanned in competitive hacked Pokemon. (While ironically, Transform in move form is banned, due to it primarily being used for degenerate strategies like anchor shot+imprison+transform) In fact it plays a similar role: versatile (in the sense of how it plays after transforming, even if its pre-transform movepool doesn't see much use), exists to prevent overcentralization, and adds healthy variety. Most other formats don't worry about Dittos as much, but here "countering your own sets" is practically mandatory and spawned several sets designed to counter a transformed version of itself. (unburden, judgement/multi-attack and the niche techno blast...)

In games that have a team structure, i.e. Pokémon, I don't think there's anything necessarily wrong with having an "instant add" like Snorlax as long as the whole team doesn't become "instant add" or it overly centralizes a specific play pattern. And I guess it'd be pretty easy to make the opposite argument, but I think that "always Snorlax" is much less bad (if it's bad at all) than "always sand" or "always offense" or "always stall", specifically because Snorlax is only one piece.
@emmetstanevich2121 Жыл бұрын
I feel like snorlax's dominance is also somewhat due to a lack of competition. In a meta like GSC OU, you need a special wall, and snorlax is pretty much the only good one that doesn't require you to slam the breaks in order to use it (like blissey.)

The way gen 2 snorlax is described, it sort of reminds me of a "hero" unit in an RTS. While it is powerful, adaptable and generally "better" than any other single pokemon in the meta, it isn't iron-clad, and other pokemon can potentially answer it even better than snorlax itself can, once its set has been revealed. In addition, snorlax's uniqueness and flexibility winds up organically creating an environment similar to VGC's restricted seasons, where players are allowed to bring a limited number of "restricted" pokemon, with the main difference being that the limit is 1, and all the options for that one slot have the same type and base stats. The fact that it's so flexible, and is usable on any team, also means that it is, in a way, fairer than a meta where there are dozens of powerful, but more restrictive pokemon running around, since no matter what playstyle you want to play, and no matter what pokemon you want to bring, you can *always* bring snorlax, it will *always* make your team better, and you will *never* be in a position where you're forced to go without snorlax because you just can't fit it on the team. Another point in Snorlax's favor is the fact that it also helps its team defensively. Most "broken" pokemon tend to be banned due to their offensive potential, and either don't have much bulk, or their bulk mainly acts to foil attempts to prevent their sweep (think yache berry garchomp in gen 4, for example.) In addition to being able to wall many special attacks without needing to give up momentum, snorlax's inability to immediately threaten itself without selfdestruct means that your own snorlax can help you play around an opposing snorlax. Even if your 'lax can't beat theirs in a 1v1, the moves you see them use can help deduce what sets they might be running, and which of your own pokemon can best handle it. Finally, there's also the fact that snorlax is, well, really slow. It can usually take whatever it's hit with and respond in kind, but the fact that the opponent will almost always be moving first means that snorlax will have to play carefully when it gets low on health, as a 'lax in KO range can't get itself out of KO range before getting hit. Additionally, an opponent at low health will usually be able to use rest or recover before snorlax can hit them.
@emmetstanevich2121 Жыл бұрын
Also, I feel like people who want snorlax or lando-t banned due to how common they are forget what "OU" stands for in the first place: overused. It's explicitly meant to be the ceiling for usage-based tiering.

Big yellow I think had the pest comparison for those who play tf2. Medic is by far the best class in the game. A team with a good medic wins like 99% of the time against a team without one. But if you remove medic, you lose out on the fast paced firefights that the game is designed around. Defense would have very little counter play and everyone would be forced to camp medpacks and dispensers.

@shorelinefishing9213EVs were the same in Gen 1 and 2. You can still max all stats.

theres also the fact that the other 2 top mons got nerfed

Sleep Talk and Curse. Gen 2 didn't have EVs, but rather Stat Experience, and you could max out the Stat Exp of every stat. Its why Gen 2 as a whole was a very bulky meta game, everything ran max defenses and HP unless they needed a specific Hidden Power Type
@LunarWingCloud Жыл бұрын
Special stat split granting Snorlax 110 base Special Defense, Curse being really good in a slower game due to all stats being maxed still in Gen 2 like in Gen 1, lack of good Fighting types that could counter it.

I haven't played any Gen 2, but I have learned of GSC OU's Snorlax dynamics through this channel, Big Yellow, and various Smogon Posts. That being said, some of this may be misinformation: I feel like another important part of why Snorlax isn't banned is that it can do everything, but NOT all at once. It has no counters when the opponent doesn't know its set, but once they do, it's not too unreasonable to exploit the Snorlax. On paper, it's an obscenely strong, all-powerful juggernaut reminiscent of Gen 1 Mewtwo, but thanks to four move slot syndrome, in practice it ends up being more like bringing a custom pokemon to the battle.
@watery2211 Жыл бұрын
The only counterpoint I have is that this is kind of a dumb argument by itself. Every pokemon has a counter, every strategy has a counter if specific enough, yet we don't not ban stuff because it has counters. Also same thing could be said about gen 1 mewtwo. It has 4 moveslot syndrome and can't beat everything in the tier with 4 move slots, and if you know the move set, it could be exploited. (ofc I'm not saying GSC lax=Gen 1 mewtwo, when the whole tier is about beating you, you aren't that broken).

I still would like to see what GSC metagames would look like with modern tiering systems, not because I think they would be better, its just for the sake of pure curiosity. Aight, Snorlax would get banned and Zapdos too, whats next? I wanna know, Its like on of those 10 things you have to see before you die (not literally but its a way to phrase or describe it lets say) We already have RBY tradebacks, why cant we have a "modern tiering" GSC? It would be a cool experiment
@emmetstanevich2121 Жыл бұрын
A lot of special attackers would probably need to get banned if you don't want the tier to shift to hard stall. The thing about snorlax's usage rate isn't just due to it being so much better than its competition, but rather, that there isn't much competition in the first place as a special wall. Raikou is weak to EQ and is itself a special attacker, blissey is... well, blissey, and there don't seem to be many other candidates able to step up to the task. Snorlax is unique in that it's a special wall that also takes physical attacks well, while also not requiring you to slam the breaks in order to use it. In fact, its sheer versatility gives its status as a "meta check" more weight, since every team can run snorlax, which is arguably more "fair" than a pokemon that only a select few team archetypes can make use of.
@lordinfernape4753 Жыл бұрын
@@emmetstanevich2121 Hard stall isnt bad I mean the only purpose of tiering is making the metagame balanced, if the metagame is balanced it doesnt matter if its pure stall or pure offense, what matters is that everything is reasonable to answer thats it

I have a new theorem, The Cresselia Theorem. It’s the antithesis to the Deoxys theorem in which great bulk and Trick Room will make up for a Pokémon’s lack of speed. Obviously there are better defensive users of Trick Room than Cresselia, as well as much better slow offense Pokémon. However, the theorem is named after Cresselia because it was introduced the same generation as Trick Room, and still remains a solid and reliable member of Trick Room teams.

Kinda reminds me why some of the meta weapons in splatoon were seen as pretty good to have as the meta. On paper one option being extremely dominant might not be a good thing, but if the reason it's dominant is because it can fill multiple roles well, then really what that does is open the door for other options on the team that wouldn't have a place there otherwise.

Snorlax feels like the Queen in chess to me in a lot of ways. It’s very strong, does almost anything a piece can do , but everyone knows it’s there so you need to protect it so it can take the opportunities to do it’s job.
@IschmarVI Жыл бұрын
Snorlax seems to be a bit more affordable than the queen though as evidenced by it having made great use of selfdestruct on certain sets. But I do like the analogy for sure. A term for the phenomenon that I really like is "suffering from success".
@Epzilon12 Жыл бұрын
That's true. I do imagine there are times in good chess matches where sacrificing the queen is necessary (i'm not great at chess no bully). Yeah, Snorlax really does suffer from its own success for sure. @@IschmarVI
