You hit it on the head! The E39 has issues, yet the vast majority of them are easily fixed without lot of money leaving your pocket! I have two a 1998 540ia with 127000 miles when I bought it in 2015 total cost of repairs $3000 now at 157800 miles. My 2003 530ia had 135700 miles when I bought a year and a half ago now it has 139800 miles! I did over paid for it but it had next to nothing wrong with it no oil leaks or codes. I did the 100000 miles maintenance when I bought it for just over $750. I just replaced the alternator two weeks ago. I added the Blue Bus box too! The 540ia gets around 20 mpg on the highway at 75 to 85 mph 12 mpg in town. The 530ia get 22 to 24 mpg at 75 to 85. With 12 to 14 mpg in town. These are so comfortable and smooth driving. The vast majority of my friends who have rode in it think it is only five or so years old. The E39 is one of the most beautiful BMW ever produced! Plus all the parts cheap and you can do almost all the repairs and maintenance yourself! By the way I am seventy years old.

@@assassinforce5637 Yes! The 2003 530ia steering is much heavier compare to the 1998 540ia! In reality unless you had not drive either one you would not know! Both are still not that heavy compared to Ford or GM cars!

I have a lot of sentimental attachment to the e39 it being my first car. I’m on my third one I most say the nicest one I’ve ever gotten 2002 bmw 540i with M sport package. Literally beg the guy sell it to me. He ended up letting it go because he wasn’t looking forward to doing the timing chain guides which had never been done and yes it was making the rattle noise. I did the timing guides that same week I bought it. I’m in love with it.

Hi Nathan. I'm over in the UK and have a 1998 523 with a 5-speed manual and the M52TU engine. I have owned it since it had 51000 miles on it in 2003 and now it has 102000 in it - so I've had it coming up 19 years and it hasn't caused me any trouble whatsoever. I have done all the preventative stuff you mentioned including Vanos seals, PCV, hoses, gearbox and diff oil and I will never sell it even though there are better spec'd versions around. Mine has full leather and dual climate control too.It isn't going to break any land speed records but it is very perky for a 2.5. About 5 years ago I thought about selling it but I'm so glad I kept it. It's a fabulous car for the highway and it still gives me mid to high 30s mileage. I'm hoping E39s will soon go up in price - not because I will ever sell it but because other people may look at it more with admiration, wishing they owned it. I do get nice comments whenever I get tyres for it. Here in the UK boy racers have got hold of most of them and killed them and the M5s are more than likely to have been thrashed. Mine has been extremely well cared for and I will always keep it that way. Thanks for all your hard work throughout the years keeping this channel going. I hope you stay safe and well and I look forward to watching more content in the New Year.

Hi Nathan. I like your review of this E39. I have one with a V8 engine, M60 type . I don't care how long it will take me to restore to near perfect, your ideas and views are so valuable that I will get it right, even if it is 24months or more. So thank you for sharing your experiences and skills, a charlatan self repairer and DIY like myself depend on shared best practices like you do. Thanks man👍!

I saw a Kalahari Beige Metallic e39 the other day and started drooling. That silvery-tan color looks sooo good on the e39. I almost approached the owner to see if they would ever consider selling it, but it looked like an old couple -- probably the original owners who will keep it until the day they die.

I just picked up a 2001 BMW e38 also known as the 740i. Like you said about the e39 it’s hard to put a value on a really nice and clean unit. That being said, I picked mine up and it’s mint and I mean mint. Typical pixels missing on dash info center but every button and functions on the car works. I did have to immediately replace the plastic radiator which was no big deal. Did I mention to say this car has 75,000 original miles. I love this car. It’s stepping in time and provides a more analogue driving experience. Point I was getting at is I paid $7,500 and I believe it’s worth a lot more if I were to sell it which I will never do.

I will say one thing, i live in norway, and here the e39 is known to have rust issues. Particularily in the rear trunk lid on tourings, the jack points, behind rear wheel well, and under the carpet by the rear seats (water leaks in though the vapor barriers and pool under carpet) It is mainly because of road salt, but almost every e39 here has rust in these spots. Luckily no rust in other places, usually :D Fluid-film is your friend, rust-belt folks! (Not sponsored)

I picked up a 99 528i/5speed manual for 4.5k this year. Its got a clean title, 158k miles, biarritz blue with grey interior. It was in near perfect shape, but I think manual e39s demand a premium over autos. However I plan to own this car for a very long time, and I wanted the better reliability of the manual, better mpg, and better driving experience. If you can drive a manual, I suggest looking for a manual e39. I have owned other 528i, 540it, 740i 740il, and 750il, and all e39/38s are good if they were taken care of by the previous owner. I do agree with Nathan that e39s in good shape are starting to disappear, so if you've been looking for one of these and the right comes up for sale, don't hesitate

What do you think about running an E39 on LPG? The options I'm looking at are 328i, 325i or 535i with automatic transmission... secondarily I'm considering an E34 525i aut as well, so my question goes to that model too. I live in the EU, so fuel price is something I must consider. Thanks Nathan!

I bought my 03 530i a year ago in May for $2k with 130k miles on it. Currently at 138k. The auto transmission was slipping but it didn’t matter because I planned on having it swapped to a manual anyway, which I have, and I have to say it’s the best investment I’ve ever made. Even though I’ve had some things fail on me, (alternator, battery and fuel pump) those were expected. I love the car to death and plan to keep it as long as I possibly can. Heard that about the water intrusion. Ever since those asshats changed my windshield, the beast takes on water like the Titanic. I thought I cleaned the sunroof drains out but apparently not. If I park the car with the rear lower than the front, water drains fine. If I park with he front lower, fills up the floor boards and the glove box. If you take it through an automatic car wash, God help you. That beast leaked behind the dash and filled up the floor, water was coming out of the dome and map lights and leaking onto the shifter. It was a shit show. Never taking it through a car wash again, never taking it out in the rain again, and if I thought I could sell it for a profit, I would and go get something else I can drive in the rain.

Hey Nathan I have an auto 03 530, to my knowledge the Transmission fluid has never been changed. Currently sitting at 122K miles. Do you recommend to change the fluid or at this point don’t touch it ?

Almost pulled the trigger on a 03 530i sport a/t this past summer but it was just too much money plus it had been in an accident. Dealer wanted too much at 7399 and wouldn't budge. Oh well

I wanna see a single 120$ ebay special control arm set last even 30k miles. E39 do like to rust as well, particularly the rear jacking points that rot out on most of them if your car sees salt. Overall they are excellent cars though, you just have to get one in the right spec, ideally no automatic on the i6 cars.

I’m currently looking at a 106k mi ‘03 6spd. Owner is asking $24,5 with all major service records including VANOS but no suspension updates. Intact slate grey interior. Perfect screen pixels. I’ve just “lot” inspected it and I see semi dry window seals and minor paint chips. Haven’t gotten it up on a lift yet for an underbody inspection. Hopefully the owner is flexible. Thoughts anyone?

I'm confused because I scored a 2000 523i with 5 speed automatic transmission. Also has LPG conversion that seems ok exept a bad connector the second day I got it. Hoping to find the picture of the car in the thumbnail. I have the same wheels - these wheels may be m5 wheels of some kind? A lot better than the usual m5 wheels I feel are not even in the top 10 for this vehicle.

98 523i 430000km, need to DIY Oil filter housing gasket, hope I do it right. Will try brakes and suspension too. Highest cost had been botched mechanic work costing a bloody lot. I love my car. And the damn salt and water. Live in Denmark. Rear doors quite water tight, so garage, and draining water is a good idea.

I received a free 1997 BMW 528i E39 in decent condition. The car has 213,000 miles on it. The body and interior are in good condition. Thus far, my investment is a title transfer of $300, front struts and spring for $500, an EWS DME Key fob program for $400, an alternator for $300, and a battery from Costco for $180. Hoping it's worth it.

Yeah tell that my E39's engine who took some water because the dreanage whole under the cabin filter was closed from leaves and mud... And before that I changed the fuel pump cuz they don't like to sit around in cold weather, lol. Bmw's need more love than a woman. Ps. check the fuses and relais out first, and to test the fuel pump you can test it with a 12v charger or batery if you have starting issues, just saying.
