Season 4 got way too heavy handed with its political messaging and dumb references to real world political events to the level of mind-numbing absurdity. I hated, hated, hated what they did with Frenchie in the last season. He was already a wasted character from just spending 3 seasons pining after Kimiko. I was SICK of hearing him constantly saying "mon coeur, mon coeur" and doing NOTHING. And in the last season they just do the same thing with a different character! In Season 1 we are told repeatedly that Starlight can blind/burn eyes out with her powers. She literally threatened The Deep with this in Season 1 episode 2. LET US SEE THAT!!!! It would make perfect sense for Starlight to use her powers to blind Victoria and THEN have Butcher kill Victoria. But no. Starlight sucker punches her and Butcher just kills Victoria in 5 seconds. The show made Victoria into this unstoppable villain that needed to be taken out (which I still don’t understand because why is she a bigger threat than Homelander? She seems far more reasonable than him but okay) it would’ve made perfect sense to the story to have the super villain that needs her eyes to use her amazing powers to be blinded. That would’ve also highlighted Starlight’s power because the show always portrays her as a protagonist. It was right there! But the writers are more interested in shock value and stupid one sided political takes rather than good story telling.

The worst part of this season is how spiteful it is toward its audience. 75% of the scenes in the show intentionally mentions real-world politics (the puppet scene in Episode 7 pissed me off the most). It’s especially spiteful toward a huge chunk of its audience, because it often disrespects and feminizes male characters who happen to be white like Hughie and Tek Knight. There are several characters whose conversations consist of making fun of white dudes. Eric Kripke and his team are well aware about what we hate in modern movies and shows, and they constantly use that against us. For every mention of the word “woke”, “facist”, or “racist” there is an equal bashing of straight white dudes (who are apparently all right wing by default just by existing) to match it. For example, when Sage talks to Homelander about reputation in Episode 3, she makes a condescending comment about how our favorite characters growing up were all straight white males, which she compares Homelander’s reputation to. It might come off as just a lukewarm joke, but there are many other examples of this. When the Deep confronts Starlight and comments “because I guess it’s cool to hate on white guys now”, even though this is all coming from a villain character. Kripke and his writers intentionally make the villains “speak facts”, which are automatically invalidated because it’s coming from the bad guys. The Boys wants to be self-aware, but it has nothing to say, just empty platitudes about our real world and how “woke” people are “evil” while also joking about how racist white people are, especially from Sage and Tek Knight. For some reason, this season feels like a Twitter-tier hit piece on straight white guys in favor over an actual story. And yes, this show was always “woke”, but at least with Season 1 it kept things purely fictional, without even involving the Republican and Democratic parties. But from Season 2 to now the writers gradually introduced real-world elements into the show. When you have Homelander call one of the villains (Newman) a “libtard” in the first episode of your newest season of your superhero show, ya lost me.

Blue Hawk really pissed me off, because even though he's clearly racist against black dudes, the fact he says "All lives matter" when he's about to attack A-Train's brother is disgusting. It's another example of a villain saying something that has common sense, but gets immediately invalidated because of their existence as a bad guy. The long and short of it is, is that the male characters in that show are either written to be weak, fruity, evil, or sometimes all three at once lmao.

The fact they ruined two of the best comic subplots that actually showed interesting nuance is just shocking to me. The Tek-Knight storyline in the comic was actually kind of tragic. He was considered one of the only true heroes, before he got sick he never hurt or abused anyone. When he started to lose control he tried to get help but given that he's a massive dude in power armor he was too dangerous and volatile to treat. The second he worried he was going to hurt his kid side kick he instantly sent him away for his own safety. He even died a hero after his disgrace by saving a woman and child from falling bricks. His subplot was also tied to homophobia and the nature of tolerance. Tek-Knight didn't really like gay people, he was uncomfortable around them but he didn't wish any harm. He was tolerant of them. Meanwhile his former sidekick Slingwing (Nightwing rip off) Queer baited and had a lot of performative tolerance towards them because he appreciated being lusted after. But when down to brass tacs Slingwing hated them, he was disgusted by them and didn't tolerate them unless it was in a controlled setting. It also ruined the Huey going undercover as a superhero in a team. Another event that showed not all Supers were bad abusive people. Since it was an X-men rip off team of kinda slow and navie kids with an actual psychopath thrown in who was abusing them. Huey had to try to protect them from the older evil hero but also from Butcher who wanted to kill all of them regardless of their innocence just because of what they were. Also the super terrorist thing got dropped completely at this stage I guess?

I just feel like season 1 set up a compelling, but more importantly, SIMPLE outline for the show to follow. The Boys kill Supes slowly building up to Homelander. Butcher was blindly willing to kill his way to the top, while Hughie struggled internally with whether that was really the correct way to go while still acknowledging that something had to be done. They were the core of the show's conflict. But, like you said, the show devolved into side-quests for ENTIRE SEASONS. I'm not against the political messaging of the show, I felt that even in season 1, but it did get immediately more heavy handed with Stormfront basically stealing an entire season of the show when it felt like her arc could have been solved in like half a season at most. She felt like a villain of the week that lasted for an entire season for no reason. Like, I don't think it was out of character for Homelander to fall into the "master race" trope (even if the "race" in question was literally just himself), but it felt like it took over the original intent of the character and just had him playing second fiddle for the entire season at a pivotal time for the show to kick things into gear. Then you add on the overdevelopment of side characters like the Deep that just drag things out forever. Yes, the Deep was funny, but his arc has been retread so many times that I'm just sick of him eating up screen time at this point. Meanwhile other characters like Frenchie completely lost sight of why they were even in the show. Frenchie's entire plotline has felt like it came from a different show entirely. I actually love Kimiko's arc by contrast, over time she has become basically the only "real" super hero in the show and she doesn't even have a super hero gimmick or name, which is a great bit of development I think. Ryan had a clear role that was pretty obvious from the first time you meet him, but since then they've had him flip-flop so much that I honestly just don't even care about him anymore. Like sh*t or get off the pot, kid. Then Temp V completely obliterated the internal logic of the show. They basically undermined the point of the Boys (the team), and pretty much blew their load by having Hughie, Butcher and Soldier Boy pretty much beat Homelander (WAY too early), just to rug pull it immediately. Starlight started as a great character, and I don't hate her character as a personality, but again it just feels like they're doing way too much for such a simple story. They absolutely butchered (pun not intended) her romance with Hughie, and squandered the potential she had by just making her totally tangential to the story, like she's the "main character" of the B-plot, forever, when she should have been ONE of the main characters in the A-plot. I'm not even going to get into the plastic surgery... I can overlook it to an extent since its not "part of the show", but man is it just indicative of how much they lost the plot with her character. I just think seasons 2 and 3 should have been cut down into one sharp season, and season 4 should basically have just been the finale spread out more evenly, because 90% of the rest of the season was just kind of pointless, after 2 straight seasons of almost objectively pointless content. The finale felt like the first episode since season 1 that actually remembered what the show was about. Season 5 needs to be the end. It needs to refocus on what actually mattered. The world was cool, but the more they try to develop and expand it, the less it feels real. It feels like it started as a parody of Marvel, but now it basically just IS Marvel. Focus in on THE BOYS, focus on the Butcher vs Homelander dynamic, and get back to the actually compelling Butcher vs Hughie dynamic of contrasting viewpoints that still converge together despite their different worldviews. Butcher needs to become so hell-bent on destroying Homelander that he becomes almost as psychotic as Homelander, and Hughie needs to help bring down Homelander while drawing a hard line to defend the supes like Starlight that have proven that supes aren't as black-and-white as Butcher sees them. and for the love of God, stop adding more characters and side character tangents when the main cast has become so neglected.

Was watching a few clips earlier, of Lalo Salamanca from Better Call Saul, and I actually think he is better at being a menacing sociopath. Probably because Better Call Saul is vastly superior to The Boys, but if you haven't seen it, I would thoroughly recommend it. Lalo is a very serious Sociopath, but he keeps himself cheerful and friendly, to disarm his opponents. Deep down, he is a very dangerous man when he shows who he really is and what he is capable of.

Personally I still enjoy The Boys. But season 4 was not as good as the other seasons it was definitely the weakest. It would be pretty hard to mess up characters like Butcher or Homelander. I mostly watch for them, and I hope to see a up on quality for season 5. I don’t think we should drag it down to the grave, the shows almost over it’s got one more season. And I will say season 4s finale was definitely the best in the show. It’s got potential and a strong premise for build up to season 5.

I was watching a good Japanese cartoon a while back, called Death Note. The context of the story, is that a brilliant student (a genius) comes into possession of a book called a Death Note, where you can write a person's name down, and you can kill them with it. As a result, he becomes a self righteous serial killer (he kills prison convicts, at first), which eventually leads to the 'powers that be' trying to find and stop him. So they bring in the world's greatest detective, a guy who calls himself 'L', and it turns into a game of cat and mouse. They are both trying to outplay each other, and figure out how to stop each other. What makes it such a good watch, is because it is intelligent. Every move they make, is backed up with logic, and they are constantly trying to outthink each other. And it works, one of them one ups the other, and the other ones up them. They even made a joke of their rivalry by having them play a tennis match where they keep outplaying each other. Nice metaphor for their rivalry. Then you watch Sister Sage in The Boys, and she is just awful. There is a nasty viewpoint on Blacks, that they have low IQs, and it is a perpetuated insult aimed at them. But it also isn't true, because they have roughly the same percentage of intelligent vs stupid people, that every other race does. With Sister Sage, it feels like intentional bait. She is a woman, for a reason. She is Black, for a reason. She is the victim of racism, for a reason (even though an intelligent woman wouldn't fall for racism bait). And everything she does makes no sense in terms of getting a good outcome. She comes across as dumb, but very self important. Pretty sure she was designed that way on purpose to invite straight white males to call her out (bait, as I said). Death Note was very clever in the cat and mouse fight between Light and L, Sister Sage just came across as being a smug dipshit Left winger who can't get her shit together, and is only there to be insulted so the writers can claims "Ha, see, we told you White men are racist and sexist!"
