That's very possible but there are so many great teams in the Eastern Conference that just one of those teams making the ECF is going to be difficult for them. Buffalo, Ottawa, Detroit are ALL getting better quickly not even including the rest of the playoff caliber teams. Even Boston still has a bunch of very good players that will get them in the playoffs for the next few years at least. The only team that looks like it can't tie their own shoelaces is Montreal. Even Philadelphia is under new and better management. It might take 1-3 years to really show but the Flyers are on the way back to respectability.
@jmn327 Жыл бұрын
On Meier, I think some of his playoff stats were a bit deceiving: dude was a shot generation machine against the Rangers, but he just couldn't break through Sheshterkin. Now that he's had a bit of a season, a playoff run, and now offseason/training camp to get better acclimated in New Jersey I think he's going to take off; maybe 40 goals is a career year stretch, but 30 is very reasonable, I think. Goaltending will be interesting to watch: Schmid seems pretty unflappable, but obviously his output last year was a small sample size. Vanecek was very reliable during the regular season, but he started more games than he ever has before and that showed in a tired looking playoff performance. Having them split the workload is probably best for now.
@ethanwinnegrad3402 Жыл бұрын
Schmid is the key. If he can become the franchise goalie, that is the final piece of the puzzle. Of course, any Devils goalie will have to handle standing in the shadow of the GOAT. But if the can be the heir apparent, this team has all pieces is place to win multiple cups!

There is just too much parity in the league and as soon you win, all the players on the team think they are all that and want a raise. If i had kids I'd name Tom Fitzgerald their godfather. That's the level of trust he has engendered within the fanbase. I fucking love 💕 the guy. Nearly all of his important decisions have been great and the key is they haven't blown any of those franchise altering decisions like the multiple top 5 draft picks. Making the A+ pick (Makar) would have been great, but the A (Hischier) they made is totally fine. The key is they have totally avoided making any D or F decisions (N Patrick). When he picked Nemec, I thought Logan Cooley was the best player available and would have been where i went. It's also much, much easier to project forwards for non trained fans like us because the statistical performance is a more valuable data point for forwards than it is for D men who can often get a lot of secondary power play assists that don't say very much about the player. Elite centers, in the top 5 especially, are pretty safe picks. Cooley is looking great (is already on the Coyotes top PP unit), like an A or A-, but it's not as if Nemec hasn't been working out. He is looking like at worst a B and more likely a B+ or better. I knew we had more of a need for D, but I loved Cooley. Super skilled centers who can skate are safe picks. I felt like we could always trade one of our forwards. Young centers like him and Dawson Mercer (usually plays wing for us because we are stacked at center, but when Nico has been out he has jumped right in as a solid #2C) have huge trade value.

Funny how some hockey fans (esp rangers and others in metro) say the "TRAP" is how the Devils won in the 90's - and Canadian press was the cheerleader's to push that narrative. BUT whats funny is the Canadians of Montreal did the TRAP for decades, D E C A D E S, and won many cups from that system. But the 95 Devills were one of the highest scoring teams that year, so it wasn't a "TRAP" it was the Devils were just better, and wanted it. As a Devils fan, I think we're going to regress a little bit. Not dramatically because our defense is stacked, but Vanecek and Schmid cannot be our tandem long term. I think Vanecek had an Anton Khudobin-like season. He went on a hot streak that eventually fizzled out near the end of the regular season. We need to trade Vanecek for a starter. Hellebuyck's age doesn't line up with our window, so we should pursue guys like Swayman, Hart, Gustavsson, and Demko. If we can get a legit starting goalie, then I'll say we're a dynasty in the making. I'm also worried about how Travis Green will perform as our new assistant coach. Andrew Brunette had a dramatic impact on our growth last year, so losing him to Nashville this summer really stings.

They did their rebuild the right way. They accepted that they were going to be bad for a long time, and went with it. Their fanbase and media just let them be bad. Canadian teams could never do that, their fanbase and media would tear them a new one over, and over again. American hockey teams have the advantage that their fanbases are not as die hard and rabid as Canadian fanbases are. The Devil took advantage of that, and going to be rewarded soon. There are a couple Canadian teams who aren't allowed the privilege of being that bad for that long, so they are forced to keep trying to "retool" rather than actually do a full rebuild.
