One of the nicest-looking freeware add-ons for X-Plane is the Aeroworx Douglas C-47 Skytrain (the military DC-3). It looks much like this except without the cushy civilian seating in the cabin. Everyone seems to love making liveries for it. It's fun to fly. One of the things that made this plane so successful was that it really could land or take off just about anywhere--it was almost a bush airliner. Crucial in the days before ubiquitous big airports.

More than 16,000 DC-3s and military version C-47s were built in 50-plus variants. More than 300 are still flying today. The DC-3 was born into a still-nascent commercial air travel industry-and traveling by air was much riskier and arduous before the DC-3 came along.

Great historic planes! Got a chance to jump out of a DC3 in D-Day reenactment in Normandy one year. You can still do static line parachute fun jumps out of Zephyrhills, FL (floridaskysoldiers.com) using DC3s at times. Just an observation, Swiss001 doesn't like old planes in MPH but I'm sure he knows that a 'Knot' is actually a Nautical Mile (1.15 statue miles or 1.85 Km) so not much different really. Given that fact, aren't aircraft speed nowadays essentially measured in 'Nautical Miles' per hour? But what do I know, I'm just an old dumb paratrooper, LOL. Good video! A more serious note than usual which is nice once in a while.

when your landing a tailplane or conventional landing gear type plane, you always keep the tail on the ground and even with the forward landing gear so if you landing they should all three touch first and when braking you keep the nose up so if you were struggling with the landing swiss I just wanted to give some advice :/

In some cases, especially in Canada and Alaska, the DC-3 is still the best plane to fly because it’s designed to take off and land on short runways and carry very large cargo, which very few modern planes do. They’re also extremely cheap to buy compared to modern planes. This is why airlines like Buffalo Airways still fly them.

DC-3 is an incredibly safe aircraft - has had no crashes due to frame failure. You can't say something is unsafe just because of the total amount of crashes, after being in service for over 70 years, you'd think it would have one or two crashes - any many of these were due to pilot error. Also to land, you want to try and land on all three points, and get the tail down as quickly as possible to stop spinning. Also use braking for each wheel to keep it on the runway.
