BEFORE YOU GET INTO IT!…. We thought this would be a fun topic to discuss and understand our KZbin friends may well have more in depth knowledge of the Warhammer universe than us. With this in mind no need to get offended if we’ve missed something out or got something wrong in your eyes! Please be kind. It’s meant to be a fun, frivolous discussion that’s all!

I do love it how carefully Dr. Dan tip-toes around the subject of the Druchari. 😅 Also, the Masque and the Harlequin troups deserve a proper deep dive all their own. The laughing god becons!

Totally. While the Craftworld Eldar have Spirit Stones to catch their souls at the point of death, and the Exodites are sucked into their planets, and the Dark Eldar just try and stave off Slannesh by torturing others, the Harlequins go one step further. They can't be got by Slannesh because they are the rare survivors of demonic possession who managed to drive the demon from their bodies, tricking Slannesh out of their soul.

As a long-time fan of the Eldar, I very much enjoyed this discussion. One way to describe the Eldar that I've found which sums it up quite well is that the Eldar have a huge capacity for obsession and addiction. Anything they do, there is always a risk that it will draw them in too deeply and they will go too far.

Great interview Mira, Dr Dan is great. I love hearing more about the society and culture of the Eldar, to me they have an incredible depth in that sense and I always find it a shame that this part of the lore is so under-developed. A quick lore tidbit you may like: the wraithbone material that most Eldar construction is based on is, as described, a physical manifeststion of pure psychic energy, but it is sculpted and crafted in a unique way - it is literally sung into existence by Eldar walking the path of the bonesinger. Eldar engineering and archictecture is quite literally an art form, a series of melodies and harmonies that bring shape and form to the wraithbone. If you wanted an idea for a new Elf-centred video I would suggest looking at the Harlequins in more detail. They have an important role in Eldar society and have their own deity, a Loki-like trickster god called Ceogorach who uniquely among Eldar gods survived the fall unharmed. Unfortunately I dont know a particularly good literary source for them, but there is a KZbin channel by a chap called Baldermort and he has a really good 20-minute introduction to the Harlequins.

The Eldar are so good. I am a pretty new fan, but from what I have heard about early warhammer, it makes me wonder if the setting would have benefitted to focusing more on the various xeno races. The Eldar are proof that you can have a grimdark faction that its still hopeful and beautiful.

As a person who plays elf armies in every single game he plays, I heartily endorse this video. Great work, as always; I'm really loving this video format. At the start, Dr Dan mentioned Tolkien's elves, which reminded me of one of my favorite characters from a Lord of the Rings fanfiction (I know, I know, stick with me here): he's a Galadhrim elf from Caras Galadhon, an artist and a really nice guy, but what the author managed to capture was just how matter-of-fact the elves can be about being better than everyone else. This character knows he's lived multiple human lifetimes, that he's far more well-mannered than humans because of it, and he's just factually better at everything, and he doesn't see how that fact could possibly annoy humans. Even though it does. Yet, when the human main character is slighted at a victory party, this haughty elf is the first one to throw a punch. There's a lot of depth in the trope, if the author knows how to use it, and I'm done rambling now.

An interesting topic. Dr Dan did very well condensing the Eldar lore. I could hear your singing much better this week. So your tweaking worked in that regard.

There is a recent interview with Gav Thorpe where he discusses his depiction of Eldar … I don’t think he intended it, but I think he gave them all ADHD. Lack of emotional regulation, wanting to do everything at once, capable of insane hyperfocus and requiring a structure (ie the Path) to manage it and not spiral out of control. It’s just ADHD.

I think Necron players would argue it wasn't the Aeldari themselves who caused them to go into stasis, but the looming threat of Chaos (Slaanesh) that the Aeldari were on the verge of creating. But the ambiguity and different perspectives are part of what makes 40k so interesting and appealing!

Harlequins would kind of Be Like a Warrior monk bard. Training themselves and losing themselves in the Eternal fight and struggle against chaos. Along with fighting against the loss of memory of their ancient heritage, less they repeat the same error other ways

Great video. It seem like you had fun and learned a lot. Having Dr.Dan explain the lore helped me realize how close the eldar pantheon is to the olympian gods. They seem to follow the same themes. One thing though. I don't appreciate the words 'different species' when talking about the Dark Eldar. They are the same people, just with different culture and mental framework from their craftworld or exodite cousins. According to the recent lore, any eldar can be born into one and then move to the other. It is just so much trouble and mental gymnastics that it is extremely rare. This was fun to listen. Keep it up!

My Harlequins are not grimdark at all. They overact like Shatner and are about as heroic as you can get in the setting... they're just obnoxious.
