One thing I often think about is that 'Stop the Fighting!' solutions to territorial conflicts and 'Allow for Good Governance/Long Term Peace!' solutions to territorial conflicts can often be quite different. As in, it seems to be the case that short-term solutions to just get people to stop fighting can create failed states, extremally inefficient constitutional compromises and latent geopolitical tensions. If the fighting and violence had continued, you might end up with more horrific things happening (genocide, regional wars...etc), but at the end of it you're more likely to get a definitive settlement, which people can move on from. WWII is an example. IDK, I'm not really arguing for either, conflict is always terrible and the implications of letting wars go on to the last man are just awful. But when I think about how frustrating it must be to live in a semi-recognised state...it's generations of low-level misery vs. a few years of extreme misery.

Yeah - if you'll forgive me for adding my own thought to yours, since they share a similar thinking. Both humanism and free speech are relatively new dominating concepts (the ideas are old, but it is "new" that they are implemented and the defacto base value line most of so many powerful and influential nations who generally abide by them) but this has also revealed that they apparently lack solutions to issues, which in the past, were rarely issues for long, just as you described.

@@liofalba Greece and Turkey's territorial disputes aren't _that_ bad in the grand scheme of things (it's mostly over the ocean, which means actual people aren't living in limbo). Unless you're referring Cyprus? While thankfully things are relatively peaceful there, I strongly suspect Cyprus as a whole would be a wealthier and more developed place if the island hadn't spent the last 40 years split in half and if northern cyprus wasn't unrecognised by most of the world. It's also been a roadblock in the way of Turkey (& obviously Northern Cyprus's) accession to the EU (although not the only one!) The Stormont in NI has been non-functional for years, which I'm sure gets in the way of the boring day-to-day of governance which is nonetheless very important for the wellbeing of Northern Irish people.

You Serious ? Do You even Realize just how many of Todays Conflicts are caused by WW2 ???? Not to mention that just Pacifying Germany after WW2 was only Possible by Deploying Hundreds of Thousands of Troops for a Decade to Occupy Germany. Now dont get me wrong. Creating Peace with both Sides Surviving is way more Difficult of course than to just allow one Side to be Eradicated and thus simply end up in a Position where they are Simply no longer able to Fight. But the Result of that easier Peace in the Short Term. Is Generally that You end up with Bad Blood and Grudges which will remain for Hundreds of Years and will always threaten to come back. The Reason why we have so many Conflicts Recently is Twofold. 1. The USA is Weak right now. After being Ruled by Trump and now being Faced with a Trump Party Blockading the Government as well as Threatening Civil War to the Country. As well as China Threatening Taiwan and Russia having Invaded Ukraine. And thus the USA not just Suffering from Internal Problems but is also Busy dealing with External Threats. Alot of Countries which were waiting for an Opportunity to Settle Grudges or Ambitions. Now saw the Chance to do just that without the USA Intervening. 2. Nowdays. Riling up People with Propaganda and Spreading Information no matter if its False or True. Has become incredible Easy. Which means that be it True Claims of Misdeeds and Hostile Intentions or just False Accusations and Fearmongering. Its become Incredible Easy to Rally the People against someone or something and gain Support for a Movement. Which means that Seeding a Conflict has become very easy for anyone with enough Money and Power to carry out such Campaigns.

I'm a foreigner and maybe I don't understand the emotional implications of such decisions, but is it really so hard to Kosovo to give the serbian areas (which evidently want reunification) to Serbia? And is it so hard to Serbians to let the ethinically albanians rule themselves or join Albania? It's pretty logical if coexistence is impossible, but I may not understand. Unless both want just a good excuse to settle things in the old way

The problem is that the Serbs regard Kosovo as their own Jerusalem while the Albanians formed a majority in Ottoman times. Plus, the Serb majority areas are mainly enclaves. The Kosovo Serbs would either want proper autonomy or for the entirety of Kosovo to Join Serbia again while the Kosovo Albanians are similar way but with Albania. Both sides have been historically victims in some way by both peoples from Serbia proper and Albania proper. The history is long and complex.

The UN is a useless organization that has no power to enforce, is corrupt to their roots and is basically nonfunctional because of the veto system. Even if this wouldn’t be the case, how in the world should two parties get on acceptable terms if one side is a fascist country and the other one gets attacked by said fascist countries leaders friend and his terrorist group? And the moment Kurti said „hey look, they attacked US on HIS command!“ they get sanctioned because they are apparently not doing enough to get on said terms… No wonder they start enforcing their constitution.

That truck money is not a big problem, because it's only worth around 30k dollars, and will be sent back. So the serbian currency, the dinar, isn't worth much. But the real issue is Serbia's reluctance to send money to Serbs in Kosovo, who make up about 4% of the population, through legal banking channels. Instead, they prefer to sneak it in via trucks, which leads to funding terrorist activities, money laundering, and intimidating Serbs in Kosovo into compliance with the Serbian government's agenda. Albin Kurti is insisting that Serbia sends the pensions through Kosovo's banking system, following constitutional laws, and in euros.

Fun aside that has no real weight on the events but is sort of related. I was in Kosovo just prior to the introduction of the euro currency (in summer 2001 I believe) and the common currency in the Kosovo Albanian areas was the German deutschmark. I was told prior to arriving not to get any Serbian or Albanian currency and bring only deutschmarks as pretty much any country in the Balkans will take deutschmarks so I would always be able to use it in north Macedonia (simply Macedonia at the time) or Kosovo or Albania. When my father who was working with the UN tried explaining that the deutschmark will cease in the new year and the Euro will be introduced, the response he kept getting was that Balkan countries could take all the discarded deutschmarks from Germany and use them if Germany didn't want them anymore. I've not been back since, but it looks like the Euro has simply taken the place of the deutschmark.

By looking at the map where the Serb majority municipalities are highlighted I cannot stop thinking that a good old compromise with land consensions and population exchange would solve this dispute once and for all. The Serbs belong to Sebia, the non-serbs have the right of self determination. Isn't it simple? It reminds me a bit of the Cyprus situation but honestly Kosovo is a lot less complicated, as both Albanian and Serbian parts share land borders with their respective counties and that there hasn't been any redistribution of populations already. Worn Kosovo have its long anticipated independence if it stops keeping hostages the Serbs within its borders? Won't Sebia have to recognize it since it wont have any Serb population in the region to support its unitary policy?

Nope, province of Kosovo belongs to Serbia, both legally and historically. Only Serbia can claim Kosovo as part of its land.That is why EU is asking Serbia to give up Kosovo. And if Serbia recognizes Kosovo that would encourage several other regions to seek independence from Serbia by armed rebellion with NATO's help in weapons and money. Recognizing Kosovo would mean that Albanians have the right to steal 12.5 % of Serbian land. If they have the right then you can't deny the same right to others living in Serbia, like Hungarians, Bosniaks, Bulgarians, etc.
@k.o82837
@k.o82837 2 ай бұрын
We in Kosovo do not want a land swap because we already gave special rights to the Serbian community in Kosovo, such as 20 seats in parliament, Serbian official language on the entire territory of Kosovo, decentralization of municipalities, they have not had to pay electricity bills so far, and so on. So the only problem here is Serbia, which is stubborn, and Vucic, who was information minister in the Milosevic government. This autocratic leadership of Serbia burns cars and houses of Serbs in Kosovo through radoicic gangs, beats them if they don't obey and so on. So the Serbs in Kosovo want to integrate into our society, but this is not in the interest of the Serbian autocratic leadership. The same thing happened with the dinars when they brought cash into Kosovo and gave every Serb their pension payments etc. in an envelope so they could intimidate them. Kosovo should work to integrate Serbs into our society as they are a part of Kosovo and diversity is beneficial for all.

@pebblepod30
@pebblepod30 2 ай бұрын
One correction: It could be possible that creating massive amounts of new currency could lead to inflation (other than asset inflation because that can be scarce, bidding price up), but its never happened (to best if my knowledge) before without a constraint on the supply of goods as well (yrs of course inc the famous historical hyper inflation events). Unless maybe as an indirect result of house price inflation.....? The US & esp Japan created massive amounta of new money, yet no inflation until supply constraint during covid. Maybe housing inflation did something too, because then ppl demand more pay & put price up to cover residential & commercial rents.

A good video however i think some key details were left out which gave an unbalanced view on the topic. For one Kurti has made no attack on the serbian people of Kosovo directly, his main grievence is with Belgrade and lista srpska. Lista srpska being the only party that Belgrade allows kosovar serbs to vote for and threatens those who try to start other parties, this monopoly of political power led to imense corruption by members of lista srpska who became involved in organized crime, racketering, smuggling through the border, abusing the money sent by belgrade and prishtina, and ofcourse organizing a russian donbass style proxy-war insurrection. While you guys summed it up as the banjska attack leaving out that key members of lista srpska were directly involved and very probable belgrade aswell. This enforcement of currency law is just another blow to remove the power of belgrade and lista srpska. It really shows in the Ohrid agreement, Kurti is ready to guarantee the safety and autonomy of Kosovar Serbs with one simple request; that Serbia never again make claims over Kosovo. However Vucic refused it because he doesnt wish for the safety of serbs in kosovo, he wishes for Kosovo. I am aware your team is far from Kosovo to make correct evaluations of the situation however I think that a good representation of the intentions of both sides can give the viewer the needed context to form a correct opinion

This is such soft reporting on this Kosovo leadership and what let to even west putting sanctions on Kosovo. For context as you say, Kosovo separatists were recognized by USA and most western Countries even before it was stated that there is no violation of international law. But even that doesn't mean anything since Kosovo unilateral break away still violates Serbian law. You mentioned Banjska incident but failed to mention last Christmas were Albanian muslim police man shoot two CHILDREN and it is to this day a free man on Kosovo ( also a reason sanctions are put on Kosovo ) Lastly, Kosovo failed to implement critical article signed in 2013. In Brussels by both Kosovo and Serbia that gives some sort of autonomy to Kosovo Serbs and gives them legal right for schools on Serbian language to be funded from Belgrade as well as healthcare. That agreement if implemented by Kurti would pretty much solve the issue and realise tensions in Region, but Kosovo Albanians refuse to do it because they are hoping for Serbs to just move out Kosovo... not to mention this year they destroyed Christmas decorations even in their capital Prishtina, numerous attacks on Church and other non Albanian civilians.... Now those are real reasons even west can't put with their behaviour any more.

The whole conflict has just escalated since Kurti tried to establish a proper state and a rule of law. Remember that Serbs in Kosovo have been avoiding paying their bills, refused to acknowledge the law, and refused to accept the new status quo for 20 years. Also, the Albanian minority in Serbia all use dinars, why can’t the Serbs in Kosovo do the same. The double standard is crazy.

There are many double standards for each side you’re clearly looking at this situation through a biased perspective

Remember: Kosovo unilaterally declared independence from Serbia and NATO send in soldiers to protect this independence. South Ossetia and Abkhazia both unilaterally declared independence from Georgia and Russia sent troops to protect their independence in 2008.

Except for the international diplomatic efforts prior to this, and a UN Security Council resolution that Russia also voted for. Was there any of these prior to Russia intervening in these regions?

@@Gmx92 Those wicked Georgians, sending troops around their own country. And before you compare it to Serbia sending it's troops to Kosovo, the Georgian troops weren't trying to massacre the locals.

@@MPM451 Kosovo was a separatist region when nato attacked and declared independence after nato brutally attacked serbia. If Moldova sent troops to win back control of Transistria and Russia brutally attacked Moldova to prevent that, I doubt you would be defending Russia

Integrity implies the territorial integrity of a country and its indivisibility. Advocates of territorial integrity cannot simultaneously be advocates of the right to secession. One excludes the other. In the case of America, it can be seen that in the case of Kosovo it is the main preacher of that right, while in the case of Texas it is a complete opponent of that right. Texas is unique in America in wanting to secede from the parent state. If America is consistent it should allow Texas to secede because it represents the will of the majority of the people in that area. how America again applies the rule differently, striving to maintain the territorial integrity of Bosnia and Herzegovina, in the form of a federal state. That rule can go on indefinitely, given that within the territory where the minority that seeks independence is concentrated, there is always another minority that could seeks independence. The case of Kosovo is that now the Serbs represent a minority in the north of Kosovo, and if a consistent rule on self-determination is applied, then they should also get independence. In the case of Ukraine, international law is insisted on, and in the case of Serbia, this is not respected.
