Considering her kit in League, this is by far the most impressive transition to a fighting game they have done so far.

This feels like Illaoi is much more in her element in terms of how she is in the lore versus how she is in League. I'm hoping this is a good indicator that characters that don't get to shine as much gameplay wise in League will get that opportunity in 2X. I'd actually love to see Nilah in this game, I think her whipsword could translate quite well into a 2D fighting game.

People complained about the hitstop thing when the trailers for SamSho came out, and the hitstop there was enormous compared to this. After a while the complaints went away. Everything stopping when you hit a heavy slash is still one of the best feelings in any fighting game

That is a bit of a false equivalency. While true the hit stop in Sam Sho was enormous, it didn't screw with the pacing of the game at all. In fact, it enhanced it because it made the hits feel that much more impactful. This game on the other hand, being a hyper tag team game, and the hit stop being as large as it is, does seem like it could cause issues with the much faster pace.

12:51 Im a little wonky on the lore. You are not going 'inside' though. The gist of it is that it is a kind of trial by that 'god' nagakeborous. Thats what her lore is pretty much all about. The soul of the character is seperated from the body, and then its potential is being tested. And the outcome of that 'bite' is just pretty much always you not 'passing'. In actuality this would be outside the hands of Illaoi. She can only put you in front of this trial. edit: to the hitstopt thing: Years ago I pretty much only played Soul Caliburs, Tekken 3, old MK's and smash as my fighters. Which meant i wasnt used to hitstop whatsoever. To the point where i was annoyed even looking at it. And i refused wanting to play those games for that reason. Then SF4 came out and i played it. It took.. maybe a week until i did not notice this at all anymore, be it while playing or watching. So i assume people saying this are coming from a similar background as i did back then, or even just LoL. If you arent used to it, its really weird.

The simplest way I can think of to explain it is that the tentacles are a "win more" mechanic. She's not a puppet character, you want to be in their face hitting them and if you do it right you get tentacles that help you win more.

So I know a bit of league lore myself but not to much and basically the test of spirit isnt putting you inside the idle if im correct instead but its taking your soul directly to Nagakabouros for a trial to see if your soul is worthy or not. Basically strips the subject’s spirit from their body then forces them to stand against Nagakabouros to prove their worth to prove their annihilating them if they fail.

The hitstop doesn't seem egregious to me, but I'm a Strive player, so that probably doesn't mean too much. I'm used to getting a counterhit and waiting about a minute until the next frame comes out. Also, I love to see elements and characters in the background reacting to the fight! It's always so weird to me when people in a fighting game stage are just carrying on with their lives with literally earth-shattering moves landing just to their left

Yup, when she was released i did not know how to feel. She looked ugly to me, but this character grew on me. Despite maining mid and adc, she is one of my favourite characters. Pyke jinx and samira are still missing to fill out my favourite list.

I've always been at odds with her. Conceptually and design wise, I love her to death. She's such a unique concept that I've adored seeing in new game environments like 2X and Ruined King. But in League? NAH. I've HATED her ever since I started playing purely out of spite thanks to a plethora of one sided fights against her when I was new to the game thanks to playing with a group who had been playing for years. I've come to accept that her kit is the definition of a skill check, but it still pisses me off.

For an explanation of Illaoi's ult, she is a priestess of Nagakabouros, a god that promotes motion above all else. Her job is to run around and put anybody interesting's soul into her idol, forcing them to endure a test of spirit. Either you succeed and return stronger than ever and with a greater sense of purpose after a resting period, or your will is too weak and your soul becomes food for the God. One of the coolest things in league lore considering it's balanced enough in the story that she can pretty much confront anyone and give them this test of spirit. Here it seems like every character passes the test, but is severely weakened, exactly the way it works in the lore. Except for the fact that, yknow. Illaoi would never attack someone after they passed her test, because her god has deemed them worthy.

YES BIG HITSTOP. Modern games like SF6 MK1 and T8 look so rubbery. The hitstop makes the action easier to read, plus it fits the animation style perfectly. Thanks for the recap!

By the way, JM. I think the red flash relates to animation cancelling. Perhaps it's a tell for the enemies so they know when you can't cancel an animation and have to be committed to it, so they know it's a tentacle spawning move OR it's a window to cancel the move kind of like Sol's projectile, where you bait people into doimg something.

as far as similar characters in different fighters go, alice from the touhou fighters comes to mind as someone who uses similar concepts for a different end. all her c attacks place dolls in different positions that shoot a barrage of aimed bullets after a delay, but then they just linger there if neither the doll nor alice get hit in that time frame. her 22 specials then allow her to utilize the placed dolls in various ways, from turning them into whirling multihit bladestorms to making them shoot screen-wide beams to using them as the path for a big programmable projectile she's a _lot_ more meticulous than illaoi looks to be and firmly falls into the zoner category ( in a game where _every character has a rich selection of projectiles_ ), but nonetheless has the same style of setting up traps and big ol' danger zones just by pressing the buttons she wants to press anyway. p. fun to see the concept pop up here as well, considering league has had its fair share of touhou references since pretty early on

I can answer what is happening in her ult (it's lore). Her idol can test the will of people by absconding their soul/spirit and putting it on trial. If her god (Nagakabouros) determines them unworthy, Nagakabouros will kill them. So the figure we see underwater in front of Nagakabouros is their soul, not the champion being teleported or something. So her ult is an artistic interpretation of the trial.

Whats going on during the Ultimate: It's Illaoi's E Ability in LoL. She will use the idol to send a soul tentacle and pull out the SOUL of the target. That's why the enemy is the same color as the tentacle during the animation. It's him, it's his soul. This Soul will then be "tested" by the God, and if they are not worthy, they die. If they are, the come out stronger. In the lore, strong people sometimes will seek Illoai to be put to this test.
