Around 3:45 u state that both the clear and the blue system effect the tension of the cube, but does not changing only the clear not affect travel distance unlike blue nut. Is there not a difference between how tight and lose a cube is versus how strong the springs are. Feel free to correct me if I’m wrong I’m just confused slightly.
@johndolores3153 жыл бұрын
He got confused, turning the clear piece changes the height of the top part of the clear piece, and so does turning the blue part. Cyoubx, however, presumed that the bottom part of the clear piece could always reach the top part and 'bottom out', but it doesn't. Changing the height of the top part of the clear piece does not change how 'loose' the cube is because of the cylinder protruding from the middle part of the center piece of the cube, comes into contact with the blue part. This prevents the centre/bottom-part-of-clear-piece from going up further. So turning the clear piece does not change the max height that the centre piece can go (looseness), it simply changes the tightness of the spring (k constant), and is equivalent to changing springs. So it is not a gimmick.

Fellow Engineer here. I bought the XS and had the same thoughts about the tensioning system. I agree that the stepping gives a simple method for precision, but I too was looking for a table of dusplacements for each nut and position settings. I found a setting I like and enjoy the cube though.

@johndolores3153 жыл бұрын
@cyoubx I'm not an engineer but a physicist. As much as I agree with you most of the time, unfortunately, you are wrong here cyoubx. You missed something very subtle. If you look inside the middle piece of the cube, there is a cylinder protruding outwards. This comes into contact with the blue part of the dual adjustment mechanism. I know what you mean, the blue part also changes the maximum height that the bottom of the spring part can go up, the problem is, it can never reach it no matter what setting you put it on because it is limited by the protruding part of the middle piece coming into contact with the blue part. Hence the 'looseness' of the cube actually remains the same when you turn the clear piece around and is the equivalence of changing the 'K' constant of the spring. There are a lot of people in the comments who now think GAN's system is a gimmick, and I really think you did a disservice to the brilliant engineers at GAN. I'm not sure if you figured this out already and made another video to renounce your initial presumptions, but if not, I really think you should. Happy cubing everyone. And GAN's dual adjustment system is NOT a GImmick, it works like Moyu's system, just with more precise steps rather than a screw.

I paid $45 for mine-had to wait a over a month to get it but the savings were worth it. I hadn't bought a new cube in years and wanted to get a feel for the current state of flagship 3x3s. Self-contained magnet adjustment alone grabbed my attention. It's a great cube and I love using it, though the weight, speed, and texture (stickerless) threw me off. My tastes are not very refined I suppose so I'm happy with the incremental adjustment system primarily because I don't have to worry about finding settings I used previously or finding settings other cubers recommend (admittedly less of a factor once I find my preference). Lube also plays a major role and can probably substitute for finer tension control. Screws tend not to engage plastic threads the exact same way every time in my experience, which can make evenness hard to achieve reliably, so I'm fond of the screwless core. It makes disassembly/swaps mighty convenient. Plus, counting screw rotations is a drag. I know the TengYun V2 merges both worlds by including screw adjustment on top of its own cipher of an adjustment system. Personally, I've taken apart and put together too many Dayans over the years to want to deal with screws lol
@cyoubx4 жыл бұрын
$45 is a great deal and if that's what the cube cost normally, I probably wouldn't have made a video about it. I also failed to make this more explicit in my video (my bad), but I am also happy with how the cube performs and I agree that the tensioning system works (and has pros)! My point really is that it's an overengineered implementation that makes it harder to manufacture than it needs to be, making the cube more expensive than it's really worth.
@xdfdf_4 жыл бұрын
@@cyoubx another important point is they reduce the cost once a new flagship comes. The han X was 60 dollars and after the gan Xs was released they reduced the price to 45. They might probably reduce this once the next one comes

appreciate you giving your thoughts on the gann excess from a constructive feedback perspective as well as an engineering perspective. My first experience with a dual tensioning system was with the GTS 3M. I still really like that cube all the same reasons why you like the gan XS. after messing with it and trying to get the perfect tensions on it to try and make it the perfect balance of stable and flexibility and I feel like I got close. But when I learn how the Gan XS works I personally avoided purchasing it because it's tensioning was the numeric system which I didn't like to begin with. So I stuck with the Gan X with the Ipg v5 system and I still don't regret not having the XS cuz I have more control of my tensioning with it👍

@Lchu014 жыл бұрын
I don't actually own one of these and it was hard to find a good photo or video of the tensioning mechanism, but is it not the case that the center piece "bottoms out" against the blue nut, which would mean that adjusting the nut height would also change the center piece travel distance as well as the compression whereas the ratchets only change the spring compression without changing the travel distance?

@cyoubx, Precisely my thoughts on the tensioning system of this cube. Some KZbinrs say that the crystal plastic is for this and the blue plastic is for that when in reality they both adjust the spring, the same spring. This is basic in engineering class, even in physics class! Also, the adjustable magnet feature to me is pointless because when you get to your desired streght, you are fixed to that setting. I mean why wouldn't they just sell separate cubes with separate magnetic strengths? Like XS lite, XS medium and XS strong with a fraction of the cost instead of buying 1 cube with these features for $60+?

Okay I think the reason people are disagreeing with you in the comments here is because they're familiar with the GTS3's tensioning system (due to J Perm's video) and assume that the XS's one works essentially the same way. They both have a ratchet system and an extra thing (in the GTS3 it's the screw, in the XS it's the "tension control" of the blue piece). The extra bit does essentially the same thing in both cubes but the ratchet system does a different thing - on the GTS it changes where the bottom of the spring is, which is useful and isn't accomplished by the screw, whereas on the XS it still just changes where the top of the spring is, which is already accomplished by the blue piece. I think it would have been good and potentially clearer if you'd mentioned that it works differently to the GTS3's system, and explained that difference.
@doodoostickstain4 жыл бұрын
your argument for it is exactly why i didn't get the X numeric system. i wanted complete control. but in the same token, i got the XS as a roll of the dice that since it offered more options for tensioning, it would be closer to what i like. plus my nuts stripped in my X and i had to buy two sets...which didn't come with all of them since it was pre-loaded with green. that sucked. (also, my car has a CVT transmission....unlimited gears vs ~6? imagine that now lol)

why don't they just make screwheads with built in markers so you know how much you've turned? Like in height for amount of rotations and a sort of clock notation with a marker on the screwhead to notate the amount you turned within a rotation to a degree of 1/12th of a turn

You are right. And I agree with you. Only an engineer can understand what another engineers is trying to establish. Hooke's law and your explanation was very nice and I liked the way you established your point there. You know, there are many people who would call this cube "THE BEST CUBE FOR THE PRICEPOINT". But that is not the case I think that the mofang rs3m or even the moyu wrm 2020 springs and their engeneering design which relates to the perfectly constructed cores and body make more sense instead of this overlypriced cube which costs around 80 dollars in Canada. I bought the gan 356 m and I am super happy with it. I don't know why gan would do this. You are an engineer, and you are a man of science, I have a new respect for you, and you have earned a new subscriber. @laiscube4 жыл бұрын
I was never really a fan of the XS, but I think the GTS3's spring compression system works differently from XS, and the GTS3 isn't really a gimmick. While the f=kx equation still applies, and changing the compression system still changes x, what sets the GTS3 apart from other brands I know is that the compression tool compresses the spring from the bottom, while the screw tensioning compresses the spring from the top. I have tried keeping the x value constant while changing the compression (ie the GTS3 compression system shapes like a cup, and I constantly re-tensioned the screw to be the same height as the rim. I tried the cube at compression zero, then moved the compression level up to 4 and 8 and backed off the scew by the same amount). In theory spring force should be the same because I didn't change x and k cannot be changed, and true enough the speed of the cube and it's tightness didn't change. However, there was a difference in flexibility and corner cutting, possibly due to the difference in height of the bottom of the screw from the core, because that's the only thing that really changed. My experimentation however will not debunk the any system that compresses the spring from the top form being a gimmick though (which I believe the XS fits here), it's more for the GTS3 (or any system that compresses the spring from the bottom).

The différence is that with actual screws the différents side will NEVER be on the same exact tension due to the infinite possibilities, honestly the community asked for it which is why GAN did it. Moreover their expensive cubes aren’t anything new, but people are fine with paying for performance. I think the video was really interesting and explained it more or less correctly, but you’re asking for something unnecessary. I feel that the reason they give less possibilities is because making the cube too tight or too loose will make the cube lose what makes it good. I agree that sometimes the price is too overbearing, but when I buy other cubes at other price points and end up comparing it to a cube like the Gan X/XS I find the the 15-25$ more I pay actually provides me with a better feel, so honestly just to say that I disagree with you BECAUSE GAN cubes are better. You’d have to find a much cheaper cube that is genuinely better at a lower price. Congratulations on getting sponsored by TheCubicle and I hope I wasn’t too overbearing, after all, this is just a matter of opinion.

Actually I've been thinking about those duo adjust systems for a long time. My conclusion is: There's no real "duo adjust",cause we're always gonna compress the springs a little by tensioning the screws/change center travel settings. There's no way to set them up independently. But they still works pretty well cause you still able to change spring strength after setup a desire screw depth(unless you want to go weaker). Except Gan xs's system ,which is the worst imo. Here's my observations: If you look closely,modern speed cube's center travel distance is actually not determined by the bottom of center piece but the bump in the middle of it. (Meilong 3 for ex.) This design makes the center bump/screw head connection occurrs first,prevents over compression of the springs,and also benefits duo adjust system design. With this center bump design,center travel distance is not going to change when you use the system to compress the springs only.(unless you go to the extreme) For example: Moyu's system is good cause it can always make the center connection first. On the other hand,Gan xs's system is bad cause the center travel is actually still determined by the clear spring nut's maximum compression distance,not the center blue nut's connection. Which means,this system is actually still equal to normal screw/spring tension system, there's no "duo" part.
