Just got my 1560 edition, my first bible. Spent 10 years as an athiest and realized how wrong I am. Got to say it's a bit intimidating, but if I can go through dark souls lore I can do this.

You can get the Geneva Bible in a 1599 Now with a modern-day text. I just bought one in bonded leather which wasn’t cheap, but they Tolle Lege do them in hardback, a Luther’s version and a Patriot’s version. All with the original Reformers notes. My middle name is Geneva, named after my grandmother. Before learning of this bible's name, I always felt that the name was an old name. Well several years ago, I was researching and came across this bible and I was like wow the name is old. I asked some family members about this bible’s name and they were as shock as I was because of never having knowledge of such bible. It is called Geneva because it was printed in Geneva Switzerland since it was illegal to print English Bibles in England at the time. I have a copy of the Geneva Bible, but the English is so old it looks and sounds Germanic and is very painstakingly time consuming to break down what it is actually saying. I find it interesting historically as far as how the English language has changed so much over the centuries, and when i want to study that aspect of it then it's fine. For general Bible reading, however, is there a printing of this version that has more modern words to make the reading go much smoother?

I like the 1599 version by Tolle Lege Press. It’s in modern English. Keeps original footnotes and is more organized than the 1560. My uncle got the patriot edition it’s very nice.

My first thought was that they inserted one of the four names that were omitted by Matthew, but I looked them up to refresh my memory and they are Ahaziah, Joash, Amaziah and Jehoiakim. It is well known that Matthew shortened his list to make three sets of 14 names. Apparently which ever Greek text was used by the translators for that verse had the name Jakim in it. Wikipedia says that some version of the Greek have the name but it doesn't say which ones ones. Here's is what I found on which texts were used for the Geneva. Keep in mind that the KJV used the Texus Receptus which came from the texts that were used in the Geneva. Jakim is the name of one individual mentioned in the Hebrew Bible, as well as one individual mentioned in some manuscripts of the New Testament's Gospel of Matthew. In a genealogy of the Tribe of Benjamin, in 1 Chronicles 24:12, a Jakim appears, as the son of Shimei (who is referred to as Shema in verse 13). In some Greek manuscripts of Matthew, a Jakim appears between Josiah and Jechoniah in a genealogy of Jesus. The Greek texts were probably Estienne’s Greek New Testament of 1551 and Beza’s Greek New Testament of 1556. Hence, what is now called the Textus Receptus was the Greek New Testament used for the Geneva Bible. Scholars vary on exactly what all of the sources were for the 1560 Geneva Bible. Westcott indicated the sources were the original text, the Great Bible, the Latin version of the Old Testament by Leo Juda, the Greek Latin Testament of Beza 1556 and 1559, and the French Bible version of Pierre Robert Olivetan revised in Geneva in 1558. On Matthew 1 : 25 Geneva footnote - the Geneva doesn't say that Mary remained a virgin the rest of her life. In and of itself, the footnote explains what the word "till" means. The context of the verse is that she was a virgin before she gave birth to Jesus and Joseph did not know her till after Jesus was born. Today, we would understand this verse better if it said " And he did not know her until after she had brought forth her firstborn son : and he called His name Jesus." I'm not for Geneva, but these two things aren't something to discourage reading of the Geneva translation over. Edit : I think someone's been listening to Anderson, on account of those are two things he pointed out when asked about the Geneva bible.

There is a reason the Geneva bible is not widely used anymore, it is because it was just an ok translation, but not entirely accurate to more trusted Greek and Hebrew texts. It is now mainly a historical curiosity and not commonly used. Ask any real theologion that has studied Hebrew and Greek bible texts. It was translated by a smaller group of scholars that had fled England to Geneva, Switzerland and is mainly the work of William Tyndale. They did not have all available Hebrew and Greek texts available to them so they used what translations they could get. The Geneva used mainly Tyndale's work. He used Latin texts when he didn't have certain parts, some Hebrew, and also Greek and German texts, all translated into English. Sometimes the translation is off from more trusted Greek and Hebrew sources. It is still close in many ways to the KJV. They were just trying to get a decent copy out for people to read. No one was reading the Geneva translation by the time America was founded. In fact no one was reading the original printing of the 1611 King James Version either. The English language, spelling and punctuation, had changed to the point a new typeset and version had long since been printed by 1776. Spelling and punctuation changes aside, the King James Version was done by a much more thorough system of translation by a vast committee of scholars and as a result most sections flow better and words that seem out of place and confusing, and were in fact mistaken, in the Geneva make more sense when reading them in the KJV. They are both the word of God, but one is more clear and accurate and the proof is in the length of time the KJV has been in use. In the end it is up to the reader, but I personally would never stray from what has been trusted for hundreds of years.

I have nothing against the Geneva Bible but do prefer it to the KJV. My concern is I did not hear You confess the Son but only the Father. But we have salvation in one name who is the Word of God made flesh. Yeshua heMassiach or Jesus the Christ...So long as we know the Son is one with the Father and by Him all things are created... If we think we can confess the Father and not the Son we truly do not know the Father... I'm not opposed to what you're saying at all...I have a Geneva Bible myself...

@ Wow! Mine has the gothic style print...It is a little challenging, but the wisdom in garners is uncommon. Mine is a reproduction and probably not the highest quality but I'm working through it. I have the 1560 edition Geneva Bible...I went back and forth between it and the 1599 version. I believe it's the 1599... However the 1560 Geneva has the Gothic style print and Apocryphal books...

I have to ask. Remove names of gods? If the names appear in the original language, why not present them in the English translation? For the sake of accuracy of the scriptures? In fact, this brings up my main complaint about the KJV. The obscuration of god-names.

I understand... But if the K.J.V. Bible is corrupt, then which Bible do you read or is the Geneva Bible the correct bible? Is the Geneva bible the truth to understand Jesus Christ?
