Fun fact: Lenny Montana (Luca Brasi) was so nervous about working with Marlon Brando that in the first take of their scene together, he flubbed some lines. Director Francis Ford Coppola liked the genuine nervousness and used it in the final cut. The scenes of Luca practicing his speech were added later.

Also, to add to your observation, in the "it's strictly business" scene, when Michael says he's going to kill them both, they show everyone laughing as they perceive his statement as absurd. Then, the camera's on Tom Hagen's face, where we can see he is still hurt, wants to react but cannot because he just had a pretty intense argument with Sonny and now, even Michael is not taking his advice, that head movement he does, so subtle, so good...Then somewhat understands Mike's point. That scene is a masterpiece and everyone is on top of their game. This movie gets better with every viewing, in a league of its own.

What truly makes this the greatest movie ever is that if you discuss these technicalities of filmmaking, it's a masterpiece. If you discuss the plot and character writing, it's still a masterpiece. If you discuss it's storytelling, how it conveys thoughts and emotions to the audience, it's again a masterpiece. And no need to even talk about the acting performances. I say this thing that this movie does it all. It's closest to perfection that motion picture has gotten. There might be better technical masterpieces, there might be better written movies, there might be better examples of storytelling but to do it all masterfully in one movie.. I can't think of any other movie quite at this level.

Another reason why The Godfather is the best movie (maybe one of the best movie, either this or Citizen Kane is #1) because the whole movie encapsulates the mafia/gangster genre. While Bonnie and Clyde came out in the 60s and is a gangster movie, it isn't as influential than The Godfather as the movie influenced many gangster movies in the future.

I’ve never seen a movie so overrated in my life. It’s fine, it’s solid but people want to say it’s great because it’s from The 70s. There are much better movies from prior to the godfather. The pacing of this film is atrocious, the storytelling is nauseating. If you want to hyper analyse every scene to put some sort of meaning on it you could do that with EVERY MOVIE EVER MADE.

The greatest movies of all times, have the best director, with the best gut feeling of choosing the right actor for the role.Marlon Brando was a great actor, but his 3 previous movies were a disaster, that doesnt mean he is a bad actor means, regardless ur a good actor,if ur not chose for the right role,is pointless. So the visionary aspect is very important. So the best movies have the best director ,the best playwriter(dialogue is crucial),the best actor, the best costumes=colors, and the best music. I noticed the best movies or serials like game of thrones who r having success, have great music also,it get stuck in ur brain . I thnink the divine music of godfather played a great role. when i was litt i was obsessed with twin peaks,of course, the music was so entrancing!

The Godfather is definitely not the greatest movie of all time, i think that’s absolutely ridiculous. I don’t get why you’re so attracted to it’s little details or the fact that Italians have big families or how good some specific shots look. Those things along with it’s decent plot explain why some people think it’s a masterpiece, but i have much more value for a movies pacing and how often action is packed in. The first time seeing it, i literally fell asleep in the first 20 mins so i got up and it took everything out of me to finish it. Overall, i’d say it was the most boring movie i ever watched in my life and i’ve seen quite a lot of boring movies before.

Kinda agree with you.. i enjoyed the movie because I like gangster movies, but the details that she's saying like the movie poster and boxing match are so completely obvious..like every movie would have that .. the movie is also pretty slow . It's not a terrible movie , but not THAT great either

Because it was slow? That isn't called bad pacing, that's just pacing you didn't like.

I think the greatest movie of all time should have a universality to it, a movie just about everyone at all points in their lives can enjoy but it certainly doesn't "pander" or simplify itself to reach this wide all encompassing demographic, The Godfather fails at this show it to a 7 year old and the average one will be bored to tears and an old person will probably grow impatient and not want to sit through a 3 hour movie. It's not got as much rewatchability as many of the other so called "greatest" movies like Casablanca as one example and rewatchability is another attribute one could argue the greatest movie should have. It's also much less emotionally impactful as other movies Requiem for a Dream, Come And See and even more "artsy" movies like Bicycle Thieves I feel achieve this more so it doesn't top the list when it comes to that attribute or the other two above. Of course emotionally impactful is subjective but if we can talk about influence on cinema as an objective achievement (and it is) then we can also talk about influence on people and their feeling's as an objective achievement because there is an objective factual answer as to which film has moved the most people emotionally and I am confident it isn't Godfather either and that's another achievement it didn't obtain. You could argue it has the best aggregated result when you collect all these attributes together but I disagree as it's too low in each and there's some films which are high in all of them. Also there's better ensemble casts/better acted movies, 12 Angry Men and One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest to name two and the performances in them require the actors too convincingly portray more emotions than the actors in Godfather so they're tougher roles to tackle to illustrate this point which role would you rather tackle Lee J Cobb's in 12 Angry Men or The Role of Vito Corleone? I feel Cobb's requires much more emotion and has more places it could look "fake" or like acting, it's hard to play scenes were you have to emotionally break down, most of the performances in the Godfather not just Brando's require merely sitting and reading the lines convincingly with little to no emotion required that's easier than the job of what actors in movies like 12 angry men have to do and they're the ones did a better job. It has numerous goofs in it like Sonny's infamous "phantom punch" and I also find it worth noting that sonny is absolutely bombarded with bullet's and then after that get's up and opens the car door and stands up just so we can have a more dramatic shot of him yelling during it and falling down dead in a more cinematic/dramatic fashion it breaks logic (you can see he's shot in both the front and back before getting out, he should not be able too) just to give us that, which feels contrived and may take some viewers out of the movie if they notice how it was just done that way for the shot can ruin engrossment when you do. Moe Green also dies in a odd looking/unrealistic fashion, upon being shot in the eye he slowly rests his head into his arms for a nice nap or at least that's what it looks like he is doing before the blood pours from his face, it was odd and dated looking and that's another thing can take you out of it. Yes some of these can be considered nit-picks, I would argue they're not though and it's only because the claim is so lofty, the "greatest movie of all time" should be very difficult to nit-pick so yeah well shot and has a great realistic feel to some of it, a great soundtrack and is beloved by many critics but it doesn't have all the elements to make it the "greatest" film ever and I didn't get into it's biggest flaws like the pacing.
