come to think of it... hhooww did he do that? You couldn't just pop a record into the record player and hit record, you had to use a very specialized system with like, a recording needle etching into a metal cylinder... or wax? I forget which technique this would be for.. I guess shellac records? and then make casts of that to produce the record itself. And it's not as if it's a tiny little mouseworld-sized record, this is a dang human one. a BUNCH of his henchmen and I guess hench-musicians had to work together to make this. That's not even taking into account that.. presumably a rat singing is pretty quiet and the old not-very-sensitive mics wouldn't pick it up that well. we're gonna ignore that. because it's a talking rat.

The funniest thing to me is that Ratigan's trap is as simple as "Oh hey, I realized you'd find me and my gang and my secret hideout! Great, you found it! .......Now what?" Like, it's the most obvious thing imaginable, and Basin just falls fight into it, forgetting that even if he finds the place, there's an entire gang of mice and one really big rat ready to murk him when he shows up. XD

Vincent Price is phenomenal. Like, in general, but especially when he plays an animated villain. He easily steals the show in The Thief and the Cobbler, and he’s amazing here, too. Possibly my favorite Disney villain

Disney made a "Disney Villainous" board game in which you played as Disney villains trying to achieve their goals. one of the first packs released included Ratigan, and that is how I learned about, and watched this Sherlock Holmes inspired masterpiece. I love this movie.

Gosh, I love this movie! I love the characters’ expressions, how Basil’s eccentric, arrogant, smart-as-a-whip personality works so well with Dawson’s kind, fatherly heart, and RATIGAN!!! Honestly one of the funniest villains I’ve ever seen (other than Yzma, Vector, Megamind, etc). And the fact that on top of all that, it has a mysterious, heart-warming tone, it just goes to show you how much the creators cared about their project 😊

With something like Fox and the Hound 2 it's easy to come up with a dumb follow up, because the dialogue in that story is simple. GMD is not simple, so Disney can't recapture the magic.

This movie also emulates the "Sherlock Holmes" inspiration very well. I don't personally read the series but my brother does and he _loves_ this movie. A massive chunk of the reason Basil is the way he is _is_ because of Sherlock Holmes. He's implied to be the mouse version of Sherlock and even lives directly under Holmes' flat. He's a lot more cartoonish than the character he is inspired by, of course, but its hard not to be cartoonish when you're literally an animated mouse.. However, it's not overdone and Basil's character writing is done in such a unique and thoughtful way that he still manages to stand on his own as his own character.

Professor Ratigan is my favorite Disney villian. The sheer amount of ham Vincent Price shows while playing him is amazing. The guy can be super brutal too, like feeding one of your underlings to a cat because he called you a rat, kicking your second in command, who you know can't fly because of a crippled wing, off your get away blimp, devious.

Its also satisfying how Basil and Ratigan act like each others opposites and mirrors: Basil with his cocky attitude on the outside but then having to realize his fault on the inside, and Ratigans act as the sophisticated civilized rat even when on the inside he is brash and, like people would say, a rat.

Fun fact: In the original novel the movie is based on, Rattigan is a halfbreed rat/mouse and extremely self conscious about this, hence his defensiveness about being referred to as a rat. In the movie he's just a rat who wants to be identified as (an objectively inferior) mouse for some reason.

This autoplayed after my yearly listen of "Let Me Be Good to You", and let me tell ya, I've never forgotten about this movie. My dad even bought it for me on DVD as a young adult lol (I'm not a Disney adult) I tell everyone this is the best Disney movie. They get roofied, smoke, and have a raunchy song and dance at a bar. Toby, the little wind up dance doll, Dawson, breaking into the toy store, so much of this movie has stuck with me all me life. One of two of my favorite childhood movies featuring Vincent Price (Edward Scissorhands). I sing "Goodbye So Soon" frequently. One thing this movie does very well is establish all the characters dynamics/themes of the Sherlock mythos in a neat yet new way. Basil is not sherlock, he's similar, but he's more outwardly emotional, and energetic, easier to love and to understand, than Sherlock, who's quite misanthropic. He still fits the sherlock role very very well. Dawson seems to be older, rather than the comparable age of the books, he's also more down to earth, catching the obvious details that Basil misses in the hunt for the obscure. He also fulfils the classic Watson role of audience surrogate, having sherlock explain how he figured something out, though he can't be the muscle/firearm of the two like in the books. Olivia, is the children's and manages to do so without being annoying. She's also the adventures 3rd party that brings the mystery to the two and leaves after. Finally Ratigan. Unlike the original version of Moriarty who Conan Doyle created one day, Ratigan has taken the more popular form of archnemesis. It's made very clear through both spoken and unspoken means that they have been going after each other for YEARS. Basil has been unable to catch the Napoleon of crime, but conversely Ratigan has had every plan kept in check by Basil. He is probably the one thing apart from the word 'rat' to get under Ratigan's skin. And it shows. They obviously didn't have the budget and nobody cares enough anymore, but you could have sequels/spin off shows for YEARS considering the sheer weight and volume of sherlock stories. Other characters like Mary Morstan/Watson, Inspector Lestrade, Irene Adler, Mycroft Holmes, The Baker Street Irregulars. You could even go into other Victorian fiction, like 20,000 leagues under the sea, but you'd have to adapt each of the stories. However, with Ratigan, the perfect villain, no longer with them, you'd struggle to find a better mastermind/nemesis.

Unlike BBC Sherlock who is portrayed as a really arrogant asshole, the original Sherlock Holmes from the books isn't a misanthrope at all, just not a particularly sociable person. You're right though that Basil is more outwardly emotional and insecure than book-Holmes. I appreciate these differences.

Something that you don't mention about Rattigan is his obsession of being perceived as a mouse, not a 'rat' as he truly is -- to the point where he straight up kills a drunk lackey for calling him one during his villain song. He is a character that goes to such lengths to hide his feral qualities... Up until the point where Basil finally upstages him at the movie's climax. Then, in a beautiful act of symbolism, he sheds his mouse-like persona and embraces his true nature as a rat to try to kill Basil in the clock tower, which is reflected in the way he tears at his clothes and starts to run on all fours like a true beast. Thus, you have a final battle not against two geniuses, but the opposing natures of savagery and reason itself. Truly, the Great Mouse Detective is one of Disney's deepest animated movies and one of my personal favorites.

I was always intrigued by implications of that. Mice, rats, bats and the various other talking animals in the film are all considered to be vermin by humans to varying degrees, but Ratigan's bitter rejection of his own identity seem to suggest that rats are considered pariahs even among other "civilized" animals. Basil taunting Ratigan by calling out his true species seems to support that. There's also the fact that we see no other rats in the film. Rattigan doesn't even include rats in his own gang, though their size would make them better muscle. Rattigan has no problem with being evil or being perceived as such, but he does desire to be seen as intellectual and sophisticated. Maybe most rats in the film's universe are brutish and/or savage like Rattigan at the end of the film, or perhaps even non-sapient like dogs and cats appear to be in that world with Rattigan being a rare exception.

Pretty good review! You certainly touched on some very good points. The only disagreement I would have is that Basil wanted Dawson around for the sake of not wanting to fall back to his obsessive ways, but rather because Basil feels lonely. The instant Dawson started complimenting his deductions in the beginning, Basil latched onto Dawson like a vice- dragging him along for the ride, wanting to share his adventures with someone who appreciates his intellect. Given how eccentric, egotistical and aloof he is to those who need his help, I assume he never really had a chance to make personal attachments with anyone. Something that he manages to form with Dawson and Olivia over time, and therefore becomes emotional and sad when they begin to leave him. Aside from that, great to see this underrated movie getting more love!

I love this movie snd this analysis is top tier. ❤ One of the things that suddenly struck me after you pointed it out was how Ratigan is trying to outdo Basil, out perform Basil, and prove he's better than Basil... but he needs Basil to be AWARE of it. They're so obsessed with each other that it actually hinders their own plans and interactions with others. And you pointing this out made me realize that the point of Ratigan's machine wasn't just overkill but it takes time. Almost like a dare for Basil to try to get out if this time, but also he wanted Basil to be fully aware of his downfall. They could have been killed in the bar, but instead the drinks were laced eith something to make them woozy not poison. He could have killed them upon their capture, he had the manpower for it, but he wanted to taunt Basil to his face and place him in the trap. He could have killed him at the clock tower, but his ego caused him to wait until Basil woke up to make his move because finishing him off while unconscious wouldn't allow him the satisfaction of Basil being AWARE of what got him. And after the talk about Basil's character growth, I think is what made the clocktower the final straw. Ratigan *wanted* to hold his possession of Olivia over him and engage in some battle if eits and strength and courage but the problem is Basil is no longer interested in the game. He doesn't compete with Ratigan, his focus is now on saving Olivia. His pride would have gotten him killed before, but now there's no shame in running away because "besting" Ratigan is no longer important. And realizing the game is over, that Basil is ready to move on from this obsession, caused Ratigan to snap as he sees Basil leaving him behind. And ahhh i love this dynamic. Like you said, what makes them so great is not only do they reflect each other, but they're a rare case of actually being equals. So often the villains are so much more because the question is how the heroes can overcome such a powerful threat? But here is a unique balance where we really get to know both sides and see their insecurities when not directly against each other.

Thank you so much for giving light to this underrated masterpiece. ❤ I just love the enemy dynamic between Ratigan and Basil, Basil is an awesome main character, Olivia is an adorable little girl, Dowtson is easily one of the best side kicks, Mr Flabbersham is also one of the best fathers Disney has ever written, and the story is incredibly well-written and it balances out exceptionally well action, funny, intense and emtional scenes. The beginning is easily one of the hardest to watch, no matter how many times I watch this film, I always end up crying for how heartbreaking it is to see little Olivia being left all on her own. 🥺😭💔 Worth mentioning Ratigan's song is incredibly catchy and sinister. It's not as amazing as Frollo's Hellfire, but it is still easily one of the best villain songs Disney has ever produced. Heck, even minor characters like Queen Victoria, Toby the dog or Felicia the cat are great. This movie deserves much more attention than it gets! 👏🏼💖

Mine too and I think the jump scares with Fidget must have sparked my interest in horror movies. I don't remember beimg scared of him though, rather, I liked it haha! I mean there are other horror elements: the creepy clowns and dolls in the toy store, Ratigan's transformation into a completely unhinged feral psycho killer, the drunk mouse being eaten alive... Not to mention the eerie Big Ben scene. 🖤

I'm French and I had a French vhs copy of The Great Mouse Detective which was titled in my country "Basil Detective Privé ". I think I haven't seen such a dark Disney classic back then. (Well the whole movie takes place at night😅) I learned much later that the original english voice for Ratigan was horror legend Vincent Price and that it was his personal favorite role. But for us Frencht people, the voice of Basil was done by the late Roger Carel. The French voice for Asterix in most of the animated movies.

I'm not French, but I'm a voice acting nut and an Astérix fan to boot. Roger Carel NAILED Basil, he was an amazing VA. We never got our own dub of the movie in my country (Portugal), so I went out of my way to get a French DVD of the movie so I could have a physical copy. I think I made a good choice for the dub I got. 😊 P.S.: I'm still amazed that Roger Carel managed to sound younger in 2014 than in 2006.

I can't forget The Great Mouse Detective! Always a fan of Mystery and Adventure, Sherlock Holmes and the differences in scale of a human town, compared to a Mouse Society! This is a big part of my childhood, and I never get tired of watching it! ^^

This might be the only time in cinema (apart from comedies) where "the villain leaving the hero to die" makes sense. Because Ratigan desperately tries to hide his brutish nature behind elegance and eloquence. Leaving them to die with a machination matching some of basil's brilliance, was the nobleman's way to beat Basil. And Ratigan has committed himself to that persona at all costs, right up until the end. Gold.

The climax straight up scared me as a child, and I loved it! They don't make cool climaxes like that anymore (IMO). You pretty much summed up why I love this movie.

I actually just had an encounter with a big mouse today. Yet despite being bigger then usual, is somehow a very stealthy big mouse 🐁 As for the film, I remember seeing it in my childhood too (when Disney was still Toon Disney, and had movie events like the Goofy Movie 1 and 2 amongst the occasional pixar films). The clock tower scene is just as iconic and the best memory I had of the said film xD.

Fidget is imo the funniest side bad guy in all of Disney - who's greatest characters/voice actors seem to be from the 60s - 80s - and the scene where Ratigan's face turns red (blood pressure induced anger lol) is classic. My favorite Disney movie, right up there with aristocats

Always loved this movie. As a kid, I always liked its mixture of humor and unsettling scenes. As a kid, I remember Rattigan always freaked me out because it seemed like he was a monster pretending to be a person (which he arguably is) but this video shows me that the things that made him scary also make him funny, so thank you for that.

This is my favourite Disney movie. It’s so unlike anything else they were making at the time. I loved Sherlock Holmes, this had that tone down pat. It has Vincent Price, who later stated that this was his favourite role, it has one of the greatest villain songs, a burlesque mouse and some amazingly quotable dialogue

This is a film that I just watched in it's entirely on Disney+ yesterday (sadly, you have to search for it to find it, but it's totally worth it) . I saw parts of this film as a child, but only up to the part where Olivia gets captured at the toy store. As an adult finally watching it all the way through, it's fantastic. It's got all the mature themes most Disney films don't dare to play around with these days, such as smoking, alcohol consumption, guns and weapons, one of the henchmen getting eaten off camera by Felicia in the middle of a musical number and a mouse strip tease. I love it! Also, Vincent Price as Ratigan is the highlight of this movie. He's such a fun villain with fantastic and hilarious facial expressions.

From my understanding, The Great Mouse Detective kicked off the Disney Renaissance, though there is quite a bit of debate about whether it should be included in that category. Like how Bach shaped the Classical Era of music (two of the Classical greats, Beethoven *_AND_* Motzart, agree that J.S. Bach was _THAT GOOD_ of a composer; even Beethoven joked that it shouldn't be brook (his last name is brook in German) but sea), The Great Mouse Detective shaped the Disney Renaissance.

Definitely agree and yes it’s a shame that didn’t have a franchise because after all, due to its critical and financial success, this help set the stage for the Disney Renaissance. It has likable characters, great story, and cool scenes. No need to explain why Basil is my favorite Disney protagonist but of course, Vincent Price stole this movie as Ratigan.

When he talked about their resume, he played clips from Little Mermaid, Treasure Planet, and Moana. That leaves Aladdin, Princess and the Frog, and Hercules. Now Hercules is one of the less beloved of the Renaissance, and I wouldn't call Princess and the Frog a classic. I think Aladdin is the overrated one.
