The most recent GQ Sports episode of How I Spent My First $1 Million featured the Griffin brothers of the Seattle Seahawks: Shaquill Griffin and Shaquem Griffin.
Shaquill Griffin played well enough in the 2016 season to earn the 90th overall selection by the Seattle Seahawks. Seattle believed in Shaquill enough to offer him a 4 year contract worth $3.25 million.
Before I hear about what they spent their money on, my money is already invested in these guys. They’re both underdogs. Shaquill was on a UCF team that went winless and he still made it to the league. Shaquem was honored with an appearance in one of Nike’s biggest ads due to him being such a role model. Born with amniotic band syndrome, he became the first player drafted to the NFL with such a condition.
In salary alone, Shaquem has earned nearly $2 million over the three years of being with the Seahawks. Shaquill has earned over $3 million so far. We’re assuming they’re only spending within that 20% of what they’ve earned as they stated they invest 80% of what they earn. 20% of 5 million is $1 million so the numbers work out well.
Thanks again to GQ sports for this excellent series.

2:40 - That is some solid parenting right there. Their dad tossed out the first thing they bought (a champagne bottle) to teach them not to spend money on worthless items so early in their careers. All parents should do this. You sacrificed for 22 years, don't let your kid buy you a $750K house off the bat - you can upgrade by renting a slightly better house (with your kids help) and wait for that 2nd contract and/or dividend earnings.

Jay Leno had a similar money saving strategy. he had two incomes one as a car salesman and the other standup comic. He saved money he was getting selling cars which was bigger than what he was getting doing stand up and only spent his show money then when he got on TV he saved his TV money and only spent his stand up comedy money. To this day he hasn’t spent a dime of his TV show money although i’m sure he invested some of it

If you are willing you shop, you can find amazing deals on 1 or 2 year old cars (its the only way I buy mine). Let the first owner eat the depreciation and make sure it is certified with warranty from the dealer. The thing with pro athletes and rappers is having it NEW is like a badge of honor. As much as I like cars and clothes, I think people can really go overboard with those.

If we look at these expenses coming from 20% of their income, it doesn't sound bad. However, if we just look at how they spent the Million, majority of these purchases seem outrageous. Spencer's comments feel a bit biased since he kicks off the video in such a positive note. I'm not a football fan, so maybe there are additional details that sway Spencer's opinion with the Griffin brothers when compared to Tyler Herro. All in all, still enjoying the videos, but can't say I agree with Spencer giving the Griffin Brothers the stamp of approval.

I think he stated that since they're only spending 20%, he's more okay with however they're spending it. He did say that he don't agree with some of their spending (such as the jewelry and stuff, especially giving family cash gifts). Also, we need to consider this is two people spending a combined 1 million. They are already making more (since both of them got into the NFL) than other athletes (mostly just one person) featured on the series. They're set to make 5mill in salary and are spending 1 mill (like they said, 20%) on "luxury" stuff, which is prob why it's more acceptable.

And it'd be a tuned out sedan rather than a luxury car (I'm avoiding those annual registration/luxury fees from the DMV and high-cost maintenance/repairs). As for watches, I'd rather look at my phone for the time rather than wear a watch.

Spencer, Great video as always man! Curious, what do you edit your videos with? I really like the new background you’ve got, but you look like you’ve got a case of spray tan going on, lol As someone who works professionally in video production, I might suggest you back off the saturation and the highlights just a tad, add in a slight touch of coolness, and maybe bump up the shadows just a smidge. Making sure your white balance is set correctly in your camera will help with getting a natural looking skin tone immensely. Anyway, keep up the great work- I’m loving this series!

@@SpencerCornelia Hey, it's the content in the end that's most important, but the visuals do help make it engaging. For "no idea what I'm doing", I think you've done quite a commendable job, haha. If it strikes your fancy, I'd be more than happy to give you a little facetime consultation to help shore up a few of those things. I'll even give you my "Dan Lok Discount" pricing of $9,997 for an hour! ;)

The G wagon is a better purchase than the bmw I8. That G wagon can still be sold for close to what he paid for it for the next 2 years. Additionally after 6 year, he will likely still keep 55-60% value of what he paid. Much better than most vehicles.

If I was a pro athlete and let's say I made 50m for my entire career. I'd spend 3.5m of that, invest about 15m, put half in savings, and keep the rest for when I retire to open a few marijuana related businesses 🤣

Actually giving a set amount of money to family is a great idea. However you need to make it known that if they accept the money that is all they will ever get from you.

I’m totally with you on the watches and car... like I couldn’t ever imagine spending more than like $50 on a watch no matter how much money I have. Like you could take $50,000 and spend it on a Rolex or a new car or something, or you could go spend a year traveling the world and doing a bunch of awesome stuff... I mean at the end of the day, whatever makes you happy, but I just can’t ever imagine valuing a $50,000 watch (which still tells time just as well as a $30 watch from Walmart) more than the opportunity to take an amazing trip around the world... that’s just me tho
