25k a machine. Sometimes they are on heat treat, sometimes they are being cleaned and other times they are broken. Our ones take about 4 hours for a good clean. The parts are so delicate its pathetic. You have to apply lube at a precise amount or risk damaging the parts. When the machine is used to frequently it can't keep up with demand and comes out all runny or not at all.

Their machine is broken all the time because the company they buy them from has a maintenance agreement where McDonalds can be sued if they service the machines. There is an ongoing court case about this. It actually often happens with tractor manufacturers too, and it poses a large problem for farmers in the Midwest whose closest tractor dealership may be a 4 hour drive.

I went to McDonald's few weeks ago and asked for a ice cream,the girl at the counter thought it was broken and went to check and then came back ten minutes later and started serving other people after another 5 minutes she came over and asked me what I wanted to order,I told her that she said she was checking the ice cream machine and she said oh right and walked behind the counter again,she told me it was broken and a few mins later I saw people ordering ice cream and actually getting it :/

The ice cream machines at McDonald's are rarely actually broken, they go into a cleaning mode automatically around 9pm~10pm which happens to be when most people want the ice cream. Rather than explaining this dozens of times a day they just say it's broken to make it easier. When i worked there i asked if we could change the machine to clean at like 2am instead to be more convenient but my managers said it wasn't possible. This is also why it seems like all the machines are broken, because every location simultaneously has them shut down for several hours

The reason why the McDonald's ice cream machine is always broken is because the CEO of McDonald's made an agreement with an ice cream company, but what the CEO failed to notice was right to repair. (meaning you have to hire a special type of mechanic for that piece of equipment) The only problem is the mechanic would be 1 million dollars only for it to break again

I worked at a Wendy's, and was elbow deep in the frosty machine trying to fix it when a customer came inside to complain that it was always broken. Because the machine that was broken was right behind the front counter, when she asked for a manager I just turned around and asked how I could help her. I guess she realized I would not want to hear her complaining about the reason I was doing more work, so she didn't say a thing, just left.

I'M DEAD. I used to work at McDonald's. It's the design, and they keep buying the same crap one over and over. Soda machines have direct lines for syrup and carbonated water to mix. Shake machines are almost built "backwards." The shake mix base is one compartment, that doesn't hold a lot. So it has to get refilled frequently, and the machine has a "reboot" process when something is refilled. If it runs out of something else it gets pissy. The best way to describe it is like how a printer has color ink and black ink, and unless it has both, it's going to make you intervene. If one thing isn't working, then none of it is working. We cleaned it daily, and it did not fix it.

former mcdonalds employee here, the reason the ice cream machine is always "broken" is because: 1. the machine has a cycle it follows itself including a "heat mode" that needs to run through to properly maintain the machine but they will turn it off and back on (not sure if newer models do this) to get it to work again so the customers stop screaming and crying over an ice cream cone (im talking literally grown adults throwing violent tantrums on the daily im not kidding at all) which causes the machine to eventually malfunction because it cant be allowed to finish its necessary self maintenance cycle due to customer demand. 2) only 1 or 2 people employed at any given mcdonalds at any given time (franchises are always run way worse than corporate and franchise is the majority, the entire state of missouri now has NO corporate stores but did less than 10 years ago and franchises are often ran like a flaming dumpster they leave to die, cough cough FF&G cough cough deb and doug bishop) know how to clean the machine properly, and the upper management is either too lazy to teach anyone else or wont teach them because they want guaranteed time off the floor not having to deal with customers taking hella long to clean it, sometimes hours longer than it should, so they can escape being on the floor. so then it gets disgusting because there needs to be multiple people cleaning it and they run it til it breaks, then a 3rd party company such as Midwest has to come in and spend hours replacing parts on it to fix it, just for the cycle to happen again. no lie all serious i once saw repairs being done on the ice cream machine that ended up with smoke coming out and we almost had to shut the store down. so between force running the machine to combat grown adult people that are so entitled act like they still are in pre-k and mcdonalds upper management that acts like they are the most holier than thou prestiged beings on earth, the icecream machine is always "broken". TL;DR - the ice cream machine at mcdonalds is always broken due to immature adults entitled holier than thou self absorbed personalities

I can say 1st hand working at Carvel it's alot of work to clean an ice cream machine... you have flush it with gallons of hot water then pull it apart piece by piece. But this is no excuse to not serve your customers

I tell you, "customer service" is rare today. I work part time just to help my family pay some bills, I am lucky that my husb is able to basically support our family. I walked in today to see the store manager treating an elderly lady in a manner I could not believe, she was almost in tears...it was so bad I contacted the corporate office about it. The more interesting fact is that McDonalds uses the exact same machines as other fast food companies... the difference being a contract that seperates McDonalds from the others. Mc. has to pay service and maintenance costs, for errors that regular employees cannot fix. Not because they are dumb, no because the machines don't say what is wrong, they give an error only the repairman knows. People have made private software to translate what was wrong, but that same software was made illegal... because the supplier of the Milkshake machines needs steady income to survive. It is a corporate scam which costs these stores THOUSANDS of dollars to maintain. So generally... store managers keep it broken if money is tight. They made an entire documentary about it.

The real reason the ice cream machine is always broken is because McDonald's is partnered with the company that makes those machines. Those machines are programmed to routinely "need mantinance" so someone needs to come fix it very often.. That company charges a lot for it which mccdonalds corporate takes a chunk of. So it's just a way for corporate to get cash flow from McDonald's owners.. it's not the employees fault at all. You would literally have to hack the machine just to be able to fix it.

Most of the time the machine is either on heat mode, needs to be cleaned (which takes hours), or it needs to be filled and theres no one willing to stop what they are doing to grab it. It's easier to say it's down or broken, because a lot of the time customers dont listen to the simple answer and would rather throw a tantrum.

Watched a deep dive on the ice cream machines constantly breaking. It's because McDonald's has a long standing contract with a company that makes, distributes and fixes the machines. The partnership was made a long time ago between the company's. Other chain restaurants don't have broken ice cream machines as often as McDonald's because...the company that makes the ice cream machines etc sells machines that are easy to fix to those chains. McDonald's is sold a machine that only an operator from the distribution company can fix. Each McDonald's franchise has to pay a fee for someone to fix the machine. Therefore it takes longer to fix waiting for someone to fix it and having to pay out extra cash to have it fixed. That is why McDonald's ice cream machines are broken so often. Unlike other chains that are able to fix the machines themselves there is nothing an employee at McDonald's can do to fix the machines it except call someone in and pay them extra
