We're going in the right direction, but the IPF, and the country-level federations, need to be more aggressive towards making the sport mainstream. Ideally, we would like to reach a stage in which nearly every month there would be a national level competition in a big country such as the US, the UK, Brazil, Russia, and so on, which people could watch via an online stream. This would create a nice constant buzz about the sport. There are many charismatic and popular lifters such as yourself, Stephen Manuel and David Coimbra, and the fitness industry is one of the biggest industries in the world today. Everyone wants to look good and feel good, and raw powerlifting is a proven way of achieving that. Powerlifting is a very marketable sport, specially in countries with strong beach and aesthetics cultures such as Brazil and Australia. The sport is constantly growing on KZbin, Instagram and other social networks, but there is definitely the opportunity to do more!

Hey Jonnie! I was wondering if you'd be able to upload a video showing what legitimate lifts and illegitimate lifts look like when it comes to speed of the lift, hips shooting up in squats, rounded back when deadlifting and bar speed etc. I'm hoping to compete in my first meet next year and as you discussed there has been some critisism toward IPF refs about being too strict. Love your stuff! 20 year old from Perth Australia!

Hey jonnie, was wondering. recently did a meet where the group that organized it had some serious motivation for all the lifters ie. cheering you on, yelling right in your ear, loud music etc. From what I hear, just in my area, CPU under IPF, just locally, is dead silent. What are your thoughts on that? I know this isn't really an issue compared to the points you brought up, but I feel that for me, as it was my very first meet where I only knew a few people, having that sense of people "backing you up" and cheering you on, also helping me get more comfortable with my first meet, really made me fall in love with powerlifting as a competitive sport with a lot of camaraderie and sportsman ship. I still plan to compete within CPU under IPF because I don't have to cross over into 'Merica, but I'm still somewhat hesitant. (more or a less a "never know until you try" situation I guess. srs.)

While I'm a huge fan Johnnie because he's a hell of a lifter and a very reliable source for information, I have to disagree with some of the points. (except squat depth, pisses me off when I see high squats get passed) But it is my personal belief that the best way to grow the popularity of pling isn't to drug test but to make the public more aware of the facade drug testing creates. All drug testing achieves in my opinion is to raise the hopes of the public only to be let down that they can never achieve that level naturally. Also there just isn't enough equipment divisions in the IPF, mainly for me because I compete raw w/ wraps :P I will agree that the IPF is the best way to quickly raise the popularity of powerlifting, I'd disagree that it would be the best route for the sport.

CanditoTrainingHQ i think the more popular and therefore more competitive powerlifting will get, the less "clean" athletes you'll see competing, so that basically one day it'll be the same as all other sports; drugtesting, but every competitor is enhanced. what would you as a competitor do in that kind of scenario jonnie?
@nastynate4481
@nastynate4481 10 жыл бұрын
alpiwiththe bigballs you have a good point. alot of my friends are enhanced powerlifters are actually good people and stick to their own federations because they have integrity not to compete in the ipf/usapl. It is important to promote usapl but we don't want to become a monopoly. these enhanced guys need to have their piece of the pie and get venues or else they might be tempted to jump to usapl. As it stands already there are rediculous number of ipf people testing positive especially in the eastern countries. Russia in the past and now Kazakhstan. last thing we need is for usapl to go downhill. But at the same time it is rediculous that these other feds in the US are getting more publicity and promotion. your average bro at your local gym discovering powerlifting couldn't name one ipf world champion but they could tell you about the cube method and 10 20 life and westside.
@naughtyorgneiss
@naughtyorgneiss 10 жыл бұрын
nasty nate Wait, doesn't USAPL testing have to go through IOC, i.e. Olympic lab testing? Most of those clowns would get weeded out. If beating Olympic testing was that easy then people wouldn't still be getting busted (8 @Sochi in 2014, 15@London 2012).Like JC said, you can beat the testing but it's getting tougher and tougher and they are going to have to cycle off. Most likely they're still going to have to come off the stuff to compete in USAPL and that could introduce a slew of problems for them (like injuries).

JONNIE CANDITO You should also mention how the IPF uses the 29 mm Eleiko bar as opposed to differing bars for every lift in other federations. Many deadlift numbers are inflated in other federations due to the use of the 27 mm Texas deadlift bar. The 29 mm Eleiko bar will bring non-IPF lifters to their knees.

David Puckett They should bring back the Ivanko power bars, and Q bars. I have pulled many times on the Eleiko bar and it's not for deadlifting. That's a squat and bench press bar. The design is silly. Short, and stubby

@@AmericanBulldogFit it doesnt matter if the bar is the same for everyone, it just isnt comparable to other divisions, ipf lifters would be even closer to records in non ipf divisions, altough big portion of them are still better than non tested athletes, wich is because of more people competing in ipf definitely.

why doesn't the IPF digitalise the judgement of lifts? especially on squats. It'd be much more subjective and easier to call if depth was hit if sensors were placed and read on the knee and hip joints. I'm talking about similar sensors they'd use in the making of movies when using CGI if anyone gets me.

There needs to be less feds to so there is higher competition at each event. Weightlifting competitions are great to watch because you have guys going back and forth, changing attempts based on what others are doing, it actually feels like a sport. Apart from the big ipf events, powerlifting competitions feel more like just a bunch of guys who have decided to test their maxes on the same day. I mean you always hear powerlifters say I'm just here to beat myself, I don't care what others are doing, it's like even the people competing don't see it as a sport.

I must disagree with you. IPF is ridiculous. You should have gotten that deadlift in World's, but they no rep-ed you. They are way too up their ass about their "rules". And the Westside clips you showed were NOT half reps. They hit parallel and that should be the minimum standard. There are people who can never hit "depth" because parallel is their max depth due to their anthropometry. ATG is not possible for all people, no matter how much hip mobility work you practice. ATG is just a preference, not the law of Squat Land.

I'm not a powerlifter (weightlifter since 1978) and admittedly I accidentally stumbled onto your channel and this vid. I'm sure no powerlifter wants to hear the opinion of an outsider so those that don't can ignore me at the same time they go fuck off :-) I would like to see both Olympic weightlifting and powerlifting go away to be replaced by a hybrid sport which combines the two. One event that captures the explosive power of weightlifting and the raw brute strength of powerlifting would be desirable and in my opinion, become quite popular as it really illuminates over all athleticism I would propose keeping the snatch as one contested move. From the powerlifting side I would consider either the squat or the deadlift (there are advantages/disadvantages to both).

I was behind you all the way until you mentioned the 2 year ban, then I remembered just how elitist the USAPL is. You don't unify the sport by kicking people out for non-exclusivity, and you don't unify the sport by claiming that any lift outside your fed is illegitimate, which is NOT what you did (you only sited actual BS lifts), but unfortunately it's been the trend I've seen from other USAPL lifters. If you didn't do it in a USAPL meet, they don't want to hear about it. Unifying powerlifting under a single fed is a dream that died in the 80's, for better or worse. I'll stick to feds that play loud music and accept everyone, and there are feds out there that still have good reputations for good judging without all the extra isolationist BS that comes with the USAPL (the USPA comes to mind).

Candito, you are without a doubt a major inspiration for myself and a lot of people to take powerlifting more serious. I might even buy your shirt for good measures.

Currently competing in the APF. So far, I've seen nothing crazy like half squats or short pauses on bench. Judging as been fair and by the rules (at the meets I've been too). I will say this, I placed second in my weight class (75kg) to a guy who looked like he was 200lbs. Been thinking about competing in the USAPL, but they have very few meets here and the ones that are here are 6 hours away. Solid points man.

CanditoTrainingHQ I think the 'World meet' you are talking about is NASA. That is the fed that I compete in, because I live in the mid-west. I totally agree that it is ridiculous to call it a world meet. The only thing that stops me from competing in USAPL is that they don't allow knee wraps in raw competition. I know the knee wraps add to your squat, thus making it equipped. With that same logic, you can say that using a belt is 'equipped'. I don't like to squat without wraps due to safety. It's the same reason I use a belt. Safety. I have been thinking about competing in USAPL because it has better competition. I just don't know if I want to compete without wraps.

I don't like any nonsense for weigh in. I'd put a scale right next to any lifting platform so athletes can be weighed before their lift. If they don't weigh what they claim, their lifts don't count. I'd do the same for wrestling and all else. No more fudging, starving, dehydrating or showing up for the event 25lbs. heavier and having a "walk around" weight of 50lbs. heavier. Let's have some honesty in sports.

Awesome vid. I honestly wanna see you try Olympic weightlifting. I saw you commented on one of Cal Strength's vids before and was like, "whoa, is that Mr. Glutes???" Lol

Because I saw the video on the side, and out of curiosity, did you ever retry the deadlift 500xMR? I know you wanted to get that clean ten. I know it probably does not fit at all in your training, but I saw a video of four people competing (a powerlifter, a weightlifter, a bodybuilder, and a strongman) to see who could squat with their body weight the most times in five minutes. I think the powerlifter and weightlifter got in the low 70s and the strongman and bodybuilder got in the 50s. It would be cool to see you try that. Talk about being sore the next day!

Will you make that video on equipped vs raw anytime soon? I'm pretty new to powerlifting, and I really don't know the difference between raw and equipped, if you look at the pics at the end of your vid. I mean, both Carl and Ray seem to have a belt, knee wraps and a suit on. I might be missing something though! ;) Love your vids by the way!

Is usapl and ipf the same federation? Usapl is only in the USA and ipf is world wide? Correct? And do they have the same rules or different rules
@radeonclounde9218
@radeonclounde9218 10 жыл бұрын
yeah, but ipf should really ban the single ply shirts, cmon, its ridiculous, fredrik smulter, the actual bench press world record by IPF, can bench 400 kg with a single ply shirt. but without it, he can barely bench 280 kg.

Love your channel but if u want to be an athlete and play a sport its called weightlifting. Snatch and C&J... Bodybuilding and PL are not sports! Olympic weightlifting or ur just wine tasting... opinions aren't sports

IPF is the only federation that is pushing for the olympics. Which would be awesome.

That is cool. I think the olympics doesnt want another sport with a barbell they already have weightlifting. But they have so many "sports" that are dumb like archery n shit.

Though I completely agree with the squat depth. Do you not think the IPF can be overly strict for no reason at times. I know it's better to be too strict than too loose, but watching that Connor Lutz vid and him getting called on time because of his set up does seem a tad wrong. Also I've seen what are perfectly good lifts red lighted for (what I could see) no reason. That's the only draw back IMO, and it's a minor one, I just wouldn't want to see a legitimate lift taken away from someone for no reason. Still, great vid.

Very good Johnny for you honesty. I totally agree with you on all your 3 points. You can't dismiss the usage of steroid because We know that most of the elite power-lifting champions are on drugs they just bypass the test by using some tricks. Many other you-tubers who compete in PL don't like to talk about this issue because they are probably using steroids themselves.

All that's needed is 1 other organisation that has the same judging standards as IPF, which isn't drug tested. And that covers all bases. Some organisations, particularly their SHW multiply divisions are a complete joke when it comes to judging depth on squat and timing on bench,

for natural people yes, but lets be honest people would much rather watch the lilliebridges, dan green, andrey malanichev other untested raw lifters in general. I think its unfair to to compare the likes of david hoff and other equipped lifters to these guys just because they're untested. I have eric lilliebridge on facebook and saw him comment on hoff's lift saying its bullshit. the reason powerlifting has grown soo much is because of the RAW scene becoming so big, not because of the IPF.

they need a 308 compatible division.....there are absolutely too many lifters in SHW. No one who is 285 should be lifting against some one who is 350.

I would compete in the IPF, but I wouldn't want to embarrass the other competitors. I total over 5,000 raw at 400 lbs shredded and it just wouldn't be nice of me to completely destroy the competition. What do you suggest I do if I don't want to hurt their feelings?

I agree with the drug testing, competition, and depth points, but why don’t they allow you’re heels up/head up and why don’t they allow raw w/ wraps and multiply there just forms of lifting. And about multiply not being strict about depth the uspa judges strict depth in multiply. I know there’s controversy about the 24 weigh in yes they might weigh heavier but it’s safer I’ve seen too many people pass out and go to the hospital cause they were severely dehydrated after a weight cut.

you have a good point. alot of my friends are enhanced powerlifters are actually good people and stick to their own federations because they have integrity not to compete in the ipf/usapl.

I agree with a lot of what you talked about here; legitimacy being the biggest point. Let's face it, the drug argument isn't really an argument at all. It happens, just like any other sport at the top level. One thing though (like any other fed) is the USAPL is not without its cons. I have not competed in this federation, but have read a lot of the rules and standards they hold their lifters to, on and off the platform. Being strict is one thing, telling a lifter where they can compete is another. Again, great video. You hit on some great points.

"The lifter must bend the knees and lower the body until the top of the thigh at the hip, NOT the hip joint, is lower than the top of the kneecap." Don't bash geared lifters for being geared lifters. It's a different sport. It's what they chose to do, instead of competing raw. Yes the vast majority of them take drugs but it's not illegal in their sport.
