Sure...after the roaring success of the XJ220 project that went soooo well... Concept building has a purpose but going to production would have been a real mess for Jaguar. Everyone woo's for the concept and when production realities are imposed, the first pre-order buyers are pissed and the order cancellations commence. Remember, the F1 was not successful in production either and is rare like the XJ220 because, they did not sale. It's a 4 banger hybrid. I am not saying it would not sell a few units, but it was not going to be some huge profit center for the company.

Then when the Detroit car show came around Jaguar had nothing to show for it and found out what their employees were doing. So they showcased that instead with a V12 engine. Demands was high yet since Jaguar never planned anything for it they never had any production lined up for it. Eventually they couldn't deliver on the v12 and opted for a v6 twin turbo from the gawd awful group B rally car. Many buyers didn't want a boring v6 and wanted their money back. Jaguar lost tons of cash and it would be years before they got back on the radar once again. Moral of the story is : Never trust a Brit cause they will double cross you just as shown on their flag. 😂

Let's be real for a second; this would have cost nearly twice as much as a 918. Sure, still half the cost of a P1 or LaFerrari but c'mon. On top of that, it seems Jag learned nothing from the mistake of putting a lower displacement, lower cylinder count engine into their "hypercar". The sales were dismal in the XJ220 because of the V6TT in lieu of the V12. While I understand from an engineering PoV, the buyers (you know, the guys who make or break the success by paying for the endeavor) want something more exoctic. Jag built a car for themselves yet again and not for their customers. Result: Massive waste of funds for a company facing some financial hardships. Maybe some cool trickle down tech but that's about it.

Which is why new units were still available for sale 5 years after production (and recession) ended? I vividly remember the "outrage" in the auto media over the engine switch. Its not made up. That is not to say the xj220 engine is bad, but what was "promised" was a V12 and how they treated those that tried to cancel orders was a big mistake that is still talked about in that community... The F40 was its contemporary, sold ok and outperformed the production XJ220... at a comparable price point. Super/hyper-car buyers are a finicky group and still prefer the cylinder count to be higher than lower. Mclaren had NO providence and NO existing customer base and charged a wicked premium on the F1, its first production car... with a BMW engine... the second production car came 12 years later.... it took that long for people stop saying "a Mc-what?" There is a reason why the XJ220 tends to sale for less than original retail still.... and if you factor in inflation.... they are still underwater.

Its still in prototype stage. So it will weigh a lot with those wires and instruments on board. It is still in the process of fine tuning, sadly it never went further to production ready.

Claiming it was "too good for us" is just stupid. Claiming it was the "most sustainable" is yet another bit of mindless poo.

Rimac Concept_One was a thing as well during that period and while they never made it to large production, they did sell a couple of them.

One of the most* Whilst it wasn't “too good for us” it was most definitely too good for it's time.

Well, 36mpg is pretty damn sustainable for a 900hp supercar in all fairness.
@Sean_Farmer5 жыл бұрын
@@Erowens98, the word sustainable is typically associated with wind or solar power.
@Erowens985 жыл бұрын
@@Sean_Farmer No. It isn't. Sustainable refers to an energy source which can be sustained, thus not being based upon a limited resource or causing major environmental damage. Nuclear, Wind, Geothermal, Solar and Hydroelectric are the most common. Though the later twos sustainability is arguable. This car is petrol powered so can not be considered sustainable. But it does use less petrol than most of it's competition, which makes it the "most sustainable" in it's class.

@@biggo_8170 Thank you but I had watched the entire video. Thats no explanation. Tata was and is loaded. Other reasons speculated at the time was a lack of brand equity, past failure of XJ220 etc. Some more careful and insightful journalism would have been appreciated and interesting.

@@chawenhalo0089 Pretty sure this was under Ford not Tata. 🤔

Also amongst other things it was because of the global economy and Jaguar's poor judgement. Well not just Jag but the industry as we knew it at the time.

There is something special about this car. It's a result of passion and dreams rather than a statement of wealth and ego like the Merc AMG one and the Porsche. I remember how different the XJ20 was. I wish they make this car.
