I don't believe that all the translations are disastrous, as language is insanely complicated. Finding the perfect translation for each word and sentence within the limited space of a text box is a massive challenge! Many Japanese words carry nuances that can't be rendered to English very easily without providing additional explanations, too. With that said, there are definitely occasions when the translations we were given are wrong- like how Impa tells Zelda in Japanese at the end of SS that Zelda will look after the Triforce. Whereas in English Impa says she will inherit that role. Either way, analysing the Japanese text is super fun to do, and I feel the same way as you! Finding a new way to appreciate the depth of Zelda lore is an amazing feeling!

@@kevinbaumhoer7359 in the original the game was always supposed to be meta. The tri force was the concept of the game play I. E. Action, suspense, thrills, the "story" which is a meta in media res fable that's a vessel for a "player" which is why he's called link and meant to be such an empty vessel. Link embodies courage what moves along the world, by tempering power with wisdom to overcome fear. The original Zelda was based on Peter Pan and the legend of Zelda is an ongoing world of Neverland, and each is topical while managing not to be political, and each teach you a really really harsh truth about life. The Meta aspects of it are meant to break the forth wall just as the original save chip was symbolised by the 3rd aspect of the tri force. We have the story(s), we have the world and the enemies and the mechanics, now we have the ability for the user himself to save his "state" so he can explore and do what he does and his actions and the consequences really impact the "game". Zelda has always been Mario but way more fleshed out and with a lesson that is a projection of the story and asks us to ask ourselves what we'd do. That's why the story doesn't hold your hand and you can beat it any way you want or you can find as much story in its fractal world as you want. You can also beat the game baked and naked by sheer skill since with enough knowledge and mastery j e. Wisdom, and courage, you have all the power you'd ever need. The fable structure seems childish only because people think their own actions down matter and what you put in is like with anything else what you get out. You can spam the world with bs or you can make the world paradisical. And not care what anyone else says. Japan went through extremely tough times in the recent past so they're just really good story tellers that manage to do refine gaming better than anyone else can even with 1/50 the "assets". Have you ever beaten any zelda since links awakening and not felt haunted? Or the shock of adult hood, or the realisation that you are just as responsible to "save the world" as anyone else. Links awakening set the stage for a Minerva like Zelda with a fairy and Peter pan like avatar. You always start off naked and harmless like anyone else. Ocarina of time fleshed out the world in 3D but kept the Meta music and how music has the power to unlock memories and make memories just as artfully as a sword could. And a sling shot is often more powerful than a sword. Where Mario breaks the 4th wall by making the game very apparently a game such that you can find hidden mechanics like ducking to fall "behind the scenes" to run past the "ending" to discover a warp point. And it rewards you for thinking outside the box. Zelda takes it a step further and fleshed out what'd be a Mario game with a fable about current events and your current existence in the ongoing world of in media res. Breath of the wild is a reboot back to how Zelda 1 would have been if possible. But it still challenges you to learn the mechanics and exploit it to play and beat the game however you want. Alls fair if it's consistent to the mechanics of the world. This isnt foriegn to Nintendo. Pokémon teaches you how to handle credit and finances, through earning trust and learning what to use when no different than I have my 5 main credit cards that I use as weapons to score bonuses and perks that I earned. An example of the out of the box thinking the game teaches you through a meta worldview is how people see the Biden credit score "attack on good credit" as a bad thing when anyone with good credit can just go on to excellent or deliberately duck your credit. As long as you're either above or below the range you wouldn't be penalised. But people complain as if it's not in their hands to just do whatever it takes to exploit the game and if it's fair then it's fair. Anyone with good credit shouldn't be offended that they would take a penalty if they bought a house when they could simply take out a temporary cash loan then pay it back as soon as you are cleared of the credit check. So the punishment on those with good credit is just a punishment on those who don't know how to adapt which is entirely up to you. The attack on good credit isn't an attack on anything. Anyone with good credit is likely bordering on 800. You can do one of 2 things to escape the good credit penalty. Drop to fair temporarily or boost to excellent.

Fantastic content! The phrasing of Zelda's prophecies and foresight as divine messages is super interesting. Although I think it's a mistake to treat Zelda *exactly* like a Shinto shrine maiden, she still exists as a character in a distinct fantasy universe, and Skyward Sword makes it clear that Hylia sacrificed her divine form to become mortal. It makes more sense for the divine messages to come from somewhere else, such as directly from the Triforce of Wisdom. This also ties into the fact that the land of Hyrule is inherently linked to the Triforce, to the point that destroying the Triforce means plunging Hyrule into ruin (as explained in Link Between Worlds). Zelda receiving messages from the Triforce would then be a way to show that she is deeply connected to the land itself, and THAT is why it's the Legend of Zelda.
@QuestWithAaron Жыл бұрын
That's a really fascinating take! If the divine messages did come from the Triforce of Wisdom, that would make so much sense, actually. It's certainly very possible and I love the idea that it forges a connection between her and the land itself!

I have been binge watching your videos, they’ve opened up my eyes to a whole new dimension and depth of the stories in the games. Thank you so much for making these!! They’re so well done and informative, they’ve increased my enjoyment of the series a ton. I have a question maybe you can answer: in BotW, in the King’s and Zelda’s diaries in English they reference a “fortuneteller’s prediction” and “oracle’s prophesy” when talking about why they think Calamity Ganon was about to re-emerge. Does the Japanese text for fortune teller/oracle and prediction/prophecy have deeper Shinto or some other Japanese cultural meaning that doesn’t translate well into English? There’s a theory that the oracle was evil and made the prediction to trick them into digging up the guardians and divine beasts for Ganon to possess, but I’ve always thought whether or not that makes sense depends on if the Japanese text has meanings that are absent in English.
@Sarah_H Жыл бұрын
I think it's like Doctor Strange from Infinity War having to give up the Time Stone for things to happen as they needed to. The Oracle NEEDED to give that prediction, because without that prediction, the ancient Sheikah technology wouldn't have been dug up, then Ganon wouldn't have possessed it and destroyed the kingdom of Hyrule, then Link wouldn't have been put in the Shrine of Resurrection, then Link would have never been able to defeat Ganon because he otherwise would have never obtained the tools he needed to do so. That doesn't make the Oracle "evil", it just means they played their part in Hyrule's fate
@AppleJackSix Жыл бұрын

Love your videos. Especially your Link's hidden diary entries. If they did the same thing in the Japanese version of TOTK, can you do a video about it when you're up for it?

According to Shigeru Miyamoto, co-creator,designer of The Legend of Zelda 1986 series,Princess Zelda's name was inspired by Zelda Fitzgerald, an American novelist, dancer, and socialite, as well as the wife of fellow novelist F. Scott Fitzgerald.After Miyamoto's reasoning was she was “a famous and beautiful woman from all accounts.”Her name had a ring to it that Miyamoto liked, so he borrowed it by making her Logo name,that we all known today as:The Legend of Zelda Fanchanise!

I love Japanese folk lore and took Japanese culture culture classes in college in California. I thank Sailor Moon for induction to shine madiens and shame so much lost in translations and cultures. I loved rice balls before the jelly doughnut in Pokémon (thanks Japanese tourists in California) and Japanese friends. Also I had a mom loved myths of all kinds hence knew Shiek was Zelda. She was like you know that name means royalty/prince lol in abric. Anyway hope you grow more in popularity.

I'd really love to see your theories about the end of TotK once it comes out, and has been out for a while. I myself don't mind spoilers, and have heard about the end of the game from someone who decided to rom the game, and while I won't share that here... I found it really interesting, and somewhat confusing as well. I'm honestly hoping the game will cover it in detail itself, but somehow, I feel like it won't. Simply because Nintendo seems to just loosely throw the games lore around a lot between the games, but TotK in particular... has a really weird spin to it, that I cannot understand at this point in time. I myself have no urge to play before the game's officially released though, so I'll have to wait and see, but I would love to see what other people theorize and speculate in regards to it

That’s all nice and cool. The real reason is because it’s the name of the franchise and they’ve kept it for marketing purposes.

Honestly, you can try to say whatever you want but Zelda is basically just a NPC at this point. This series should be called Legend of Link.

Can you post a Tears of The Kingdom video where get see things from Link’s perspective in Japanese as well as other hidden messages within the characters’ dialogues? I have a feeling Zelda’s love for Link has grow strong and the motivation Ganondorf has against the Kingdom of Hyrule.

I've never actually played a Zelda game, but i love that such deep resonant lore could be retconned onto what was began as an inventive but fairly rudimentary action RPG.
@bencochrane6112 Жыл бұрын
To be honest you can simplify the problem addressed here: Zelda actually has character in the games, whereas Link is just a vessel for the player. I think we only got two cases where we got more than just puzzle solving sword swinger, and that was the cartoony stuff from Windwaker and... well... excuuuuuse me princess. Not a take doen of the video, learned a lot from this. Great stuff 😊

Great video. Does in Hylia manifest in statues because Hylians worship her? Like her original self reincarnates perpetually but bunrei of Hylia become enshrined in sacred locations.
@QuestWithAaron9 ай бұрын
It's very likely that Hylia's presence is so strong because of how much she is worshipped and revered by the people of Hyrule. This is a prominent thing with Japanese "kami". When they are neglected they can become an "oni" or a demon. It's quite interesting to think about!
