If you’ve ever tried pulling a Mac’s charger out of the wall, you may’ve had a small piece of it detach. Apple actually designed it this way on purpose. Similar to these two plastic hooks that easily flip open. But why is the Mac charger designed by Apple this way? Well that what I’ll explain in this video.

Another reason might be cost cutting. By making a universal charger that can be used all over the world, Apple doesn't have to make different regional variants of the charger, instead just bundle in the approrpriate plug which is a much cheaper part to make variants of. That could be the most important reason, with the others being a bonus. Many other manufacturers do the same with regional adapters, or use standardised cables and plugs.
@MattGDesign

These are an improvement over the 1st gen buds. kzbin.infoUgkxK5mc3yw4xA7Mf2j6k6n1Uqv_KUgrKdeM Pros: The fit is fantastic. This is the biggest plus. They stay in my ears when running and become unnoticeable. They are tight but comfortable. The sound quality is about the same as the 1st gen buds. They pair more easily with my LG G8 ThinQ and immediately reconnect when removed from the case. The sound balance is excellent, good but not overpowering base and clean mid tones and highs.Cons: The noise cancellation is good but perhaps a little less effective than the Bose ANC on the 1st gen buds. Passthrough mode as not as good as the 1st gen buds making it a little more difficult to hear conversations when in passthrough.

Removing the plug on the charging brick exposes a port that is actually compatible with not just Apple's swappable plugs, but also several other cables that have that same plug on their ends, which can actually be fairly common. The port to which the duck prong (the name of the detachable part) connects is a standard IEC C8 socket, so you can connect an IEC C7 (''figure 8'') plug to it. Those cables are found on most home electronics like DVD or Blu-Ray players, stereos, PC & Chrome power adapters, etc.

The laptop power cable connector that Apple uses is called IEC 60320 C7, but what Apple actually did was make it so nobody could use their pre-existing extension cables with the charger without it looking ugly as hell. So one would cave in and buy the "pretty" extension cables instead. If you don't mind it looking terrible, feel free to plug in any other cable that fits in there and it'll work just fine (it has to, as per the standard).

Why don't other OEMs do this?! The amount of sense this makes is astronomical.
@Mrkevi123
@Mrkevi123 3 жыл бұрын
Well because No, this does not make sense. Why would you pay 19.99 for a MacBook extension when a standard extension cord would serve this much better for only a few bucks. Also a regular extension cable will work for all products, not just 1 laptop. Secondly, why would you buy an overpriced adaptor for only one device when outlet adaptors are readily available for a couple bucks. An outlet adaptor will work for all devices, not just the MacBook.

The grounding is done through the shiny mushroom looking part on the charger. The standard folding prong wall plug doesn't ground to this, but if you use a grounded cable, it will connect to this and provide a ground connection.

Another advantage: By adding the extension cord, one can place the power brick in a safer position than, for example, directly into a wall outlet, which reduces mechanical wear on all of the involved parts and possibly prevents falling damage.

Speaking of mechanical wear, what are your thoughts on leaving the Apple usb-c power adapter plugged in all the time for convenience? Are there any parts that would degrade the product if left plugged in?
@mariuskreuder
@mariuskreuder Жыл бұрын
@@ChrissyChrissyChrissy333 can't say how the bricks are designed/developed, but from my experience (IT Manager for three years, supporting 200+ MacBook users), leaving them plugged into an outlet constantly has never been a degradation issue. However, the damage I see most with the power supply units results from a) leaving the USB-C cable plugged into the brick and wrapping the cord too tightly around the charger, and b) drop damage to the pins of the removable outlet plug

The MagSafe and MagSafe 2 chargers are still $79 for each version, and I always get the 85 W versions as they are compatible with most machines. Also, iPad chargers are modular, as are the old FireWire iPod chargers, although the FireWire chargers are only compatible with the duckhead connectors as the extension cables are keyed without one of the second top groove. The round button-like sliding mechanism which is used to line up the duckhead or extension cable also serves as a ground pin for the extension cable. Please make a video about T-shaped vs L-shaped connectors, as the MacBook Air was souly responsible for the change...
