The fact that you timestamp your own show is a hugely appreciated feature. I don't like watching shows live in general and prefer to watch portions I'm most interested in. I watch your show all the way through, but it should be noted that it's RARE for the content creator to do their own timestamps.

The standard for us growing up in Louisiana was "Peavey". "Backstage Plus" and "Bandit 65" were my first real amp and first upgrade. Their bass amplification and PA systems were considered pretty respectable, and a lot of country guitarists used their guitars. "Working man gear" pretty much nailed it.

Merry Christmas Phil, to you and your close loved ones. My BEST "damage goods" purchase, was a 1965 Gibson Firebird III non-reverse headstock with original P-90's, back in 2001, from my friends neighbor for 500.00. It was damaged goods, because it had a 1.5 inch crack to the back of the headstock; still does. The P-90's kick major butt.

I bought 2 new Epiphone leftys with broken headstocks when shipped new. A white SG and a LP in bourbon burst.. i repaired them using titebond glue and sugical tubing and clamps and then airbrushed to cover the beaks somewhat. I paid $150.00 each and have had them for 3 years. They worked out well for me. Thanks Phil have been watching since you had less than100 episodes. Merry Christmas

Your discussion about Martin acoustics made me pull my 50+ year old D-18 out of its case for the first time in years. Not sure why it was dusty (hardshell case going bad?) but wiped it off, tuned it up and it sounds rich despite old/nasty strings. I'm going to put some fresh strings on it and use it over the holidays.

BTW - I purchased a Firefly tele from watching your video and it's a real nice guitar for me. You mentioned that one of your custom shop Strats had an E string running off the neck. After all this time I wound up liking the tele as my main electric guitar, BUT Fender designed the neck too narrow. Because I started by playing classical guitar, I don't like narrow necks where the E string runs off the neck. The Firefly, in case you didn't notice, is slightly wider than the necks on Fenders. It's a real plus for me. Thanks!

I think a small badge that has 'Refinished' or 'Headstock Repair' much like carfax has '1 owner' and 'no accident' icons at the top of the report would be a quick way to identify these type of guitars. I like 'Salvage Title' for wrong neck guitars that don't have original body/neck.

You are 100% correct that headstock breaks should not be listed in good, very good or excellent condition. I actually bought a Gibson where the headstock repair was undisclosed. Reverb would not stand behind me as a buyer. It's a real problem with their platform.

I think you nailed it with the concept that the guitar market is one of exchange and not growth. The other thing that I look at is the consolidation in the industry. Guild, Gretsch, Charvel and Jackson used to be independent companies that are now under the Fender umbrela. Fender and Gibson also purchased companies just to self their brands or make lesser versions from their glory days such as Tobias, Steinberger, SRW, SUNN, ect. Is there a possibility of true growth again, anything is possible but I'm not betting on that. I hope I am wrong.
@alangreenway6695

I wonder how big brands like Jackson, Charvel, EVH, Gretsch, Kramer, Steinberger, and Mesa Boogie really are now as opposed to their heyday? They get a lot of press because they’re attached to Fender or Gibson, but the ranges seem to have shrunk recently. Would some of these brands really exist if the big companies weren’t making/marketing/distributing them? 1:24:32

I was traveling a lot due to my spouse's cancer and MS treatments, I had it professionally set up about 5 years ago and it never needed an adjustment since. I'm lucky, I bought a USA Made guitar from the start, used slab Gibby. Still my favorite. Still #1 By now I do not care if it's USA made or not. It's nice, but not necessary. It's like Fender made in Mexico guitars were $400 25 years ago... now, there's nothing wrong with a Squier or any number of imports that hit that price point. They're generally great instruments.

Agree, I have guitars made Everywhere, but I definitely Cherish my Gibson the most.....Play vs Cherish are 2 different things. Some guitars are also Liquid money, so they won't get played much. Sometimes I can find what I need under $1000, sometimes I can't...and I need to spend $2000+. Every guitar has it's Own purpose for me. I have some Chinese or Indonesian guitars I can shred, and just sit on an Open rack all year round..... but I also have some USA and Japan stuff that stays in cases.

The reason you see even solid acoustics now cracking is because they're new. The guy you talked to, that guitar they were playing and leaving on the porch was probably 15-20 years old and it was one of the good ones that was probably also treated properly as it aged, maybe it lived in a more humid climate while it aged- but by the time they got to it, it was done drying out and had settled. Once they get past a certain point, you can stop worrying so much. I have an old 1950 something Gibson archtop, the sides are letting go from the top the binding is all coming off, the neck is screwed. Ppl ask why I keep it- mostly because my dad gave it to me, it was what I learned on- but also because of the wood. If nothing else, I can salvage the back and sides, maybe the front- kind of doubt it though- the fret board, might even save the neck. But eventually I either want it restored, which I kind of think is out of the question- or to have a luthier use what wood they can to build a new acoustic. That wood is perfect, it had such a beautiful, mellow tone- it's the old Jazz style arch top like the L7 but it's not so fancy. I can't remember the model number- lots of jazz musicians used them back int he 50s and 60s though. I still have the D'Armond pickup that dad used with it.

Enjoyed this show, Mr. Phil! Yeah, @ this point, the Guitar Market IS "moving sideways" @ best; and it'll probably continue that way for some time (if it's lucky). My '70s Peavey Classic Hybrid Twin and '80s Milestone 12 (best electric 12 I've EVER put my hands on!) are DEFINITELY "Keepers", for sure! The Market will likely reflect such facts, soon.🙂

Re the broken headstock repair, as a professional welder and an amateur wood worker I would imagine that just as with a good weld and the area of the repaired headstock would be stronger than the base material. The headstock could break again but not at the repair. And yes on the condition description, maybe Refurbished, Refinished, Repaired? That could cover as lot of ground. And you’re right, no way guitars like you described should be any where approaching full value. For me, maybe a half to a third of fair market?

The neck was clean broken off but an area lucifer was in the guitar shop at the time and said he could fix it ready to play at a price I could afford at that time. Well he put dowels into it and refinished the neck. It played great and sounded even better, I don't remember having a guitar where the humbuckers sounded so incredibly good. Anyhow I have never done this since and without having someone next to me saying "Yeah I can fix that." I certainly don't think I would do it again.

The first channel dies after turning on the amp, rocker switches are iffy, may have grounding problems. Physically, it is in like new condition. Do you know of any Arizona repair techs that are familiar with Vox solid state repair? The amp has great sentimental value and as a result, my desire is to have it repaired correctly by knowledgeable people. Thanks much! As a side note, I am reaching out to you on this media as I have no social media (Instagram, Facebook, X, etc.) accounts.

I heared several players...the last Kirk Hammett say that his vintage LP plays better after headstock repair. Hear him tell you himself at the gibson collection vid with agnessi

Oh the irony! I recently picked up a Peavey explorer EXP and a small 15w Crate amp with effect for 100!

On the salvaged topic: the real issue to me is that people seem to have no clue what their instrument is worth. Many guitars for sale in my area with heavy repairs or refinishing that are all posted at only a slight discount over full price. I’m sorry, but a broken headstock doesn’t merit just a 10% discount

Isn't the thing with older solid guitars that they have been humidity cycled enough that they are just more stable?

I think Yamaha makes an inexpensive plywood guitar still, but it is a nylon string guitar.

Many people can't stand up to their friends who make fun of their gear. If they keep playing they will eventually end up with instruments that their friends approve of. Sad but true.

The Gretsch Electromatic Jets are a great value single cut. I’ve had one for around 3 years and love it. Snuck its way into being the main guitar I play despite having more expensive guitars in the collection. And the pickups are tremendous.

Yes, Maple makes a stronger harder neck than mahogany. They use maple to make axe handles and stuff hammer handles out of maple

While both maple and mahogany are “hardwoods”, maple is very dense with tight grain and tiny pores (which is one reason why it doesn’t take pigment based stains well and is better colored with dye stains) and this density and tight grain give it more strength against cracking and breaking-within certain limits of course. And for this same reason, maple is relatively heavy compared to other familiar hardwoods (alder, ash, oak, mahogany, etc-all of which have larger more open pores (and take pigmented wood stains better) and often wider grain. This is one reason why maple is not used for bodies of solid body guitars-as they truly would be boat anchors. Ash despite its wider grain and larger pores is still a quite durable wood (often used for ax handles or baseball bats). So I think that if one compared two single piece guitar necks, of identical shape and carve, one could expect I think, that the maple neck would be less likely to crack, break from an identical fall off a stand or out of one’s grasp, than a mahogany one. But maple is not titanium, any wood can crack and break-and every tree even of identical species has its own unique grain pattern-and said variance even within wood samples of same species, even from one part of same tree’s trunk to another, will lead to some variability in strength. So it’s most certainly also true that laws of physics apply to any wooden structure particularly a guitar neck carved from a single plank of wood-where there is a thinner portion of the neck and particularly where there headstock portion deviates a more significant angle from the rest of the neck-this region most often being the thinnest, and where a blow to the angled headstock may be predicted to transmit more shearing force to the wood fibers in that most thin part of the neck-it’s not really surprising that neck breaks in this portion of this type of neck are more common. A maple neck of same carve may certainly suffer the same fate, albeit maybe less often than one of mahogany, but might nevertheless still crack. And it’s also not that mahogany is a soft weak wood. When Europeans first encountered it in North Anerica they loved the beauty of its grain and that it was easy to work and shape and carve and took shellac varnish beautifully-and it was carried back to Europe and used to make beautiful prized furniture including chairs. In fact Honduran mahogany planks were used to replace/repair decking on the sailing ships and then removed and replaced with oak back in Europe, and used for furniture. Personally I wouldn’t want to get whacked by a guitar neck blank made of maple or mahogany. But if I had to make a baseball bat I would choose ash-because its strong enough to hit a baseball well, and less dense and hence lighter than maple (and bat weight matters when it comes to generating bat speed and transmitting power to one’s strike on a baseball. That being said in recent decades there have been some pro baseball players who have switched to maple bats.
