1:03:52 To guy with Zoom lesson question here are a few tips, I teach a lot of zoom lessons. 1. Keep your device close to your router for better signal. 2. Too many devices on the same wifi can effect impedance. 3. If you have an audio issue, Zoom has a tendency to drop down the input level of everybody's mics. Go to your mic settings and turn the input level up and make sure the other party in the meeting does the same (around 75%). I was struggling with that one for while and finale figured out a solution. Hope this helps!

i can say this about halifax, ns, long and mcquade: i brought in a guitar for a set up that was missing the plastic tip off its pick up selector. they put one on for me, and didn't charge me for the part. i really appreciated that. i know it's a super cheap part, but it was the thought of it.

The fact that you have nice tools and a clean work space makes me feel and think that you take your job seriously and care about what instrument is entrusted to be worked on and taken care of that instrument. I know that isn’t always the case, but based on experience from different people, I would feel better when you feel that a $100 guitar is the same as a $6,000 guitar. Thanks for your integrity!

One motivation for me to work on guitars decades ago was exactly what you spoke of. It also led me to start building guitars and basses for people who spent a huge amount for a custom build but never heard from the builder, never heard back on questions, didn't get options they wanted, were limited to options In their inventory and their inventory was very limited.

Hey Phil: Thanks for answering my question about neck relief. The funny thing was I had to go do some work at a client's office immediately after I put in that Super Chat, so I heard your answer on the play back. But yeah, you interpreted my question correctly. I had loosened the truss rod a 1/4 turn so the neck went from dead straight to a slight relief. Then I lowered the bridge a bit, and the SG plays much better. I'm thinking I might try another 1/4 turn to see if it plays better or worse. Thanks for your show!!

Walked into a guitar shop in 1975, picked up an Ovation, played it for ten minutes and bought it. The frets, action, intonation were perfect. Sound was just fine. It was the most effortless acoustic guitar I'd ever played. Wrote ten of my best songs on it. Then someone stole it. Bummer.

Guitar center broke the truss rod on my scalloped neck strat and then blamed the scallops on the neck. I told them that it was unacceptable and that they would need to make the situation right. They gave me the full value which they listed the guitar at when I brought it in. Didn’t think it would work but it did.

I wanted an Ovation badly when I was young because of Alex Lifeson. Finally was able to find one (I'm lefty and this was before the internet), tried to play it sitting and hated the round back sliding off the leg. Now I know why Al Di Meola looks like he's hunched over trying to keep his guitar from escaping when he played one.

From Leo: with online lessons, the sound problem seems better if you can plug the computer into a guitar amp, Many amps have an AUX input so you can play the lesson and your guitar through the same amp. At a live lesson, you are always hearing the guitars in the room, things are different through even good headphones. I don't know how to help the visual issues

Have you ever tried out the monoprice stage right SB 100 100watt 2 channel amp head? It uses 4 6L6 power tubes and has plugins on back to run 2x12 or 4x12 cabinets with 8 and 16 om's. Text back, but it would be good for your pod cast to go over these stage right tube amplifiers of guitars as there are may of us getting into these since as good of sound as may Fender and Marshall tube amplifiers. Let us all know since many of us are in our 60's and have been around and playing and listened to Clapton, SRV, and Hendrix and went to their shows. Try it.

To have a guitar sound like a Les Paul not only do you have to use humbuckers, they must be placed in the precise distance on the body between each other, the neck, the bridge and the nut. Then the pickups have to be raised to the correct height. Fender Guitar's string scale is different from Gibson's, so they will not sound the same no matter what pickups you put in them.

Finally have a good tech for things beyond me or my small set of tools. Prior to that I had one argue with me about how I like things set up and one who did exactly what I told them in writing not to do to the guitar I had brought in. Mind blowing to treat someone else's guitar like that. Neither of these were GC but were supposedly well reputed local techs.

There are some decent, honest techs at Guitar Center, but then again, there are many techs who truly don't give a shit. In fact, I knew a guy who was a GC tech at a location in New Jersey, and this guy truly didn't give a shit about anything he worked on. In my early guitar days, I took a secondhand LTD guitar that I had recently purchased to a Guitar Center tech. When I purchased the guitar, I didn't realize at the time that it had massive fret-buzz, so I wanted it fixed. I knew fret-buzz was not the end of the world and this was something that could easily be resolved.... So, I went to GC and I paid $80 to have it serviced up and down, fix the buzzing and I even tipped the tech $20 after it was done. I was very clear that the fret buzz was my main issue, but when I got home, I come to find that I was handed back a guitar that had even worse fret-buzz - I don't know how that is even possible! I took the guitar back the next day, well, because this aggression was not going to stand, and I was told that the issue was the fretboard, which required an additional $125 to fix! A small detail the super-competent "tech" could have disclosed immediately. I know he could have said something because I saw him use a ruler checking the fretboard for gaps. It's something he must have noticed immediately, but he chose to say nothing about it. Instead, when he was done, this guy just handed the guitar back to me, already inside the case, and then gave me the bum's rush! Being rushed out gave me no opportunity to test it at the store. Plus, I just assumed this guy was on the level and wouldn't dick me, but he did dick me....he dick'ed me pretty good. I still go in this Guitar Center occasionally but only for strings or some other nonsense like that; never for any service! On the bright side, this was the situation that forced me to learn how to do these things myself. When I heard $125 bucks, it wasn't about the money, I make good money so I could have paid right then and there, but it was about the fact that they would never get another nickel out of me for service; not after being screwed without at least being kiss! For this guitar, when I got home, I ended up watching a great instructional video and filed down the frets myself! I purchased the luthier tools I needed online and I then got cracking once I received the tools. I have since learned to do many other things myself, like rewiring, change pots & pickups, change tuners, adjust the intonation, just all around maintenance. This situation has been beneficial. I have since purchased some vintage guitars that I've been able to bring back to life. I recently purchased a 1970 Lotus Les Paul copy, which hadn't been played in years. The knobs were frozen stuck and one of them even broke off when I tried to turn it. I paid $35 bucks for this guitar but after I rewired it, it played beautifully and I ended up selling it for $550! It's not all bad, I guess my negative GC tech experience led me down this road of repairs and profit! Maybe I should be grateful.....nah!

I brought in a Taylor acoustic to see how much they would pay for it. Guy at the counter was checking it when another sales rep came over and took the guitar from the case, and right after I told him, careful with that, he hits the mint condition black guitar on the countertop edge causing damage.

I totally agree with you about the attitude of techs. I’ve had people that are “great” do the work, take forever, and give me attitude because I didn’t like being overlooked because I’m just an everyday guy who plays guitar. It shouldn’t take 3 months to get a new toggle switch installed! And when I said my truss wrench was missing they laughed at me. So I left and will never go back. I don’t care how great you are, if you’re an asshole then my business goes elsewhere. Luckily, I found some great guys that do great work. I also had a SG that the tech ruined. I bought it new and it had a bad pickup and fret sprawl. He filed the frets down so far he messed up the fretboard. Then he said to just call Gibson and have them replace it. I wonder how many times that happened... I returned the guitar immediately and got my money back. The manager was cool and gave me an appeasement for my next instrument I buy (haven’t used it yet).

I took my PRS custom 24 to guitar center years ago and they completely ruined it. I just wanted a setup done on it. The tech denied any wrong doing and blamed me saying I did things to the guitar after he worked on it. I learned how to do my own setups and fixed what he did. I sold that guitar last summer and bought an ESP eclipse.
@sublyme21573 жыл бұрын
Regarding the PRS to Kiesel neck comparison, when I hold my PRS S2 Custom 24 next to my Kiesel Aries, the main thing I notice is the neck finish - painted vs tung oil. The next thing is that the PRS feels like it has a little more shoulder than the Kiesel, but neither neck feels substantially thinner than the other. I also have a McCarty 594 Thinline with a wide thin neck, and truth be told I cannot tell the difference between that and the pattern regular. Helpless comment is helpless, I know, but my humble opinion is that neck finish and fret size make infinitely more difference than neck shape or thickness.

@WannaBeatle PLEASE tell John Hall that 24 fret necks on a Ric 330/360 is insane! No one shreds on them and it completely pushes the neck pickup out of the sweet spot. It's time to go back and make them better again.

“Service is a different LLC than sales” or anything of the like is a BS attempt to blow you off. No judge is going to accept that argument in court. The main reason, aside of tax purposes, for large businesses separating in store entities like this is to be able to maintain “the brand” if one has to declare bankruptcy or gets sued. I worked for an RV and boat dealer who had three LLCs set up for each department for this very reason. Not long ago he changed the name of the whole company after decades of ruining its reputation. Couldn’t get out of there fast enough

Guitar Center techs are the worst! I bought a brand new 60th anniversary Fender Strat at Guitar Center. I was really psyched to get it home and play it but I wanted to put a bone nut and locking tuners on it first so I left it with them for those repairs. The tech who did these repairs spent 30 minutes online searching for the right locking tuners and I chose sperzel locking tuners with chrome finish. The guitar was supposed to be ready in a few days and then it got postponed to a week and then two weeks and then into a month. Finally when they called and said the repairs were done I went to pick up the guitar and the new locking tuners where are Reddish pink in color instead of Chrome and they were all crooked. The bone nut that they put in was cut horribly and not flush in the nut slot. But most egregious was the fact that this guy decided to polish my frets with steel wool and the pickups were loaded with shards of steel wool. It was a brand new guitar there was absolutely no reason for anybody to polish the frets nevermind not take precautions to keep the pickups clean. And the wrong tuners that they installed required new holes in the headstock. They tried to get me to settle for repairs to correct the problem. But I told them to keep the guitar I wanted my money back. I wasted like 6 weeks of my life dealing with the purchase and repairs of a new guitar to end up with nothing. Live and learn.

The store even takes your money if they're out of stock (not indicated on the webpage) for months before the instrument is back in stock. On the other hand, I just had a spectacular experience with Guitar Center's online support staff, specifically Gus Wolf. 2:20:55 The neck can make a guitar feel wrong for you even if you want the guitar. I really want a Yamaha Revstar RSP20CR, but every guitar in that line feels like it has a neck similar to an LP, it's kinda think and I didn't enjoy it. It's also a gloss finish on those necks, which makes that thick neck even worse for me. I still want one, but I have to get used to thicker necks first.

I find it funny that your friend thinks Josh Scott making two videos affects the price of a pedal more than hoarding 14 of them.. I’m not hating on him, just my opinion. Great episode and I love your channel, keep up the good work.

I pay attention to the prices of DOD pedals as a whole, not just the Filter. Right after his videos released, there were 2 massive price spikes on DOD pedals, especially the "Lamb Series" ones. 14 out of the thousands produced hardly accounts for a price increase.
@almostclement49753 жыл бұрын
@@nathansongne9790 that’s a fair point, and I never said that there wasn’t an affect on the prices after the videos, but you have to see that collectors also affect the price, like I said I’m not hating on you at all, I’m just of the opinion that it’s more than one thing that leads to a price rise, thousands of pedals made and with hundreds if not thousands worldwide collecting them all with double digits in their collection and the numbers soon add up.

I know they have different radius fingerboard.12 on AZ and 9,5 on American Pro...but the AZ neck is thicker than American Pro ?

Use the sound “when you removed the pickup from that guitar” in a new song. It’s sounded really cool.

Just buy the tools watch some good setup videos and learn to set up your own guitars. It's fun rewarding and easy! I've been setting up guitars for about 7 years now and I love it. I learned all I know at Daves world of fun stuff. Best setup guy on the planet!!!!

Why do guitar manufactures stick to less than 24 frets? It seems to me that 24 frests = 2 Octaves, and makes a lot more sense.... What are the advantages of less frets?

Took my Sheraton ii to guitar center for some clean up before storage, and it came back with wood falling out of the f holes. Still not sure if it was from my guitar or not.

It's a lefty too, and the tone pots came back wired wrong so they were just on / off switches.

Guitar-player Horror-Story: I once moved to a new town and brought a guitar to a tech there to get it refretted. He is well known and has a good reputation here in germany. Got the guitar back with strings rattling in the nut. Discovered this at home, because there was not even room to test the guitar on pickup. Back to the shop, leave the guitar there to fix. After two weeks I drove there again because no one contacted me. Guitar stood where i left it, but i got to talk to the tech. He explained that after the refret and a properly cut nut, the mexican neck has not enough bend of the strings left to the mechanics and a second string tree or staggered mechanics had to be installed. I removed the original string tree years ago and installed staggered mechanics, and the string height was good on the nut and no ratteling before the refret. So bullshit. He basically talked a lot of shit and blamed that it was a mexican fender with different neck measurements than a USA fender. Long story short, i took my guitar with me and since then learn to do repairs myself or let it be done in the one shop that i trust. With proper equipment i discovered what the tech did. Most likely the fretboard wasn't completely flat anymore after 10 years of playing, so he cut it done before installing new frets. The problem was he either is blind or got carried away, because i got the fretboard back with 12 radius (9.5 before) and barely any rosewood left. With that much wood removed, the nut had to be cut so deep that the string bend to the mechanics wasn't enough anymore. He never contacted me that he need to do something like that while the guitar was with him. (Flattening the fretboard is normal on a refret, but not this much.) And this is the biggest problem. I would not be this pissed about this, if he just talked to me that something went wrong. When I wrote this online (in german), a whole army off his fans came running and accused me that i am in the wrong. Because he is suuuch a goooood tech and they all trust him and so on. Maybe, but he runied my guitar and did not had the balls to stand to it. (Back then it was not possible for me to sue him, so i pleasantly tell this story to at least warn other people to be careful.) In the end i had a ruined neck that didn't felt good anymore and rattled on playing. This neck is now my training neck because it could not be saved without installing a new slab of rosewood. I installed a fender usa neck on the guitar, but it never got as good as it was. This mexican neck had something special and worked perfectly with the rest of the guitar, and this was gone after the refret.

I wish I could've caught this one live. I would ask Nathan how to get ink pen off of Gibson's Faded series guitar's lacquer?
@nathansongne97903 жыл бұрын
Try the highest grit sandpaper you can find. Like 2500. Then use 3000 disc sanding FOAM pad to blend the scratches. Sometimes higher lot steel wool works as well

@@The-11 If you're worried about sand paper, then you can try something like a Wax and Grease Remover and a shop rag. WaGR won't damage the nitro as long as you wipe it off
@The-113 жыл бұрын
@@nathansongne9790 I will try that first and see if I can get any of it off. I go to sandpaper next. The finish is really thin because it already has wood showing in spots from playing wear. It's not perfect but I prefer when they age naturally.

@@nathansongne9790 I missed this live session, but wanted to ask you if it's true that Fender's Lacquer Series, Eric Johnson, Yngwie and others touting to have all nitro finishes are actually just nitro sprayed over poly? When I rave about telling the difference people have told me it's not all lacquer. Thank you!

Heritage was formed by former gibson employees at the Kalamazoo plant when Gibson moved to Nashville. So with Heritage you are getting essentially a guitar made by a former Gibson guitar plant. The difference being that the people that work there to my knowledge are from families that have been working at that plant for generations.
