Yeah the lore about Coruscant hadn't been fully fleshed out yet when Timothy Zahn wrote his famous Thrawn trilogy. Oddly enough I believe Ralph McQuarrie did some concept artwork that depicted this park (something resembling it) for a art book on the worlds of the Star Wars universe before the prequels.

I believe it was in one the Black Fleet Crisis books, Luke explores Vader’s retreats which which was a beach or something on Coruscant. I also recall Leia meeting with another Senator in his sprawling gardens, but I suppose that could be on a rooftop. It’s been a long time since I read those books but I believe the author did some of that because he actively disliked the idea of a city planet.

I really appreciate Umate by itself even outside of the context of the Mandalorian. Its appearance is pretty symbolic of the hyper industrialization and urbanization that has turned Coruscant into a planet of cities and steel that has basically overtaken the former nature that existed in the past.

I personally loved the episode. I guess I'm a sucker for stories that show us what the smaller "cogs" are doing, their motivations, their failings or their attempts to be something more. Pershing was the classic example of a scientist so fascinated & caught in the hold of "the science of it" that he doesn't see the world or the impact of what he's doing & he's easy to corrupt because of his naivety. He's always wanted to be a scientist, that's all he wants to be and all he can think about. Clearly he was entrapped for other reasons, it wasn't to benefit the Republic for sure but this episode was far from boring or "filler".

Thank you once again for placing this in context. While I would have said, part filler, since I liked the first part and last part of the episode, the middle, longer part, felt filler only because it was obvious Pershin was going to meet a bad end, it was just a question of how and when, so I spent that time looking for those answers, missing the significance of the world building going on. I do remember being impressed by the mountain top, thinking back to Isaac Asimov's Foundation series and its Empire's capitol Trantor, how sad those granted amnesty were addressed as numbers instead of names, and impressed (while horrified) when a mind flayer was confirmed to exist after season one's comment that it was just wartime propaganda. Outside of this, it was interesting with the implications in the rest of the episode outside of this. That strike team was coming for Bo and it was only because she was off helping Din that she wasn't home when it was bombed. It was also interesting to see that this cult seems to be more moral than either the Jedi or the New Republic. I don't know Death Watch, so hearing you speak about it helps mitigate this impression. Neither the Clone Wars, nor Rebels appealed to me in the few episodes I watched to view the entire series, so your episodes like this that put everything into context are very much appreciated and I do apologize for sounding negative at times. Your channel enhances my Star Wars experience. Thank you, very much, for these videos.

I think you're missing the point of Pershing's story. The New Republic is shown to be just like the Empire. They repress him and others and treat them as numbers, just like the Empire did, they use a mind flayer, just like the Empire did. I think he genuinely wanted to do good work for the New Republic but even the office job they had him doing was destroying valuable knowledge that could have been used for good. Just like Pershing. In my opinion he was completely justified in rebelling, just like the people we cheered for rebelling against the Empire. And he didn't even want to rebel, he was going to just keep doing what he was told until Kaine manipulated him so that she could fry his brain. I don't see it as a case of, 'Well anyone will return to old ways with the right push.' I do think he was a good person who kept being manipulated, first by the Empire, then by Kaine. As someone who gets taken advantage of for their kindness regularly, I relate with the poor guy.

Star wars fans: FILLER! Anime/manga fans: you keep on using that world. I do not think it means what you think it means. That asside. I think ume can represent a lot of things - to some it's civilisation conquering the natural world (look at history with the Romans conquering and controlling nature via aqueducts and having beast games in their apitheatred), but that can also be turned on its head with une representing the constant presence of the natural world and however much you cover it, belittle it or ignore it it's still there. For this episode it represents (to me) the new republic has conquered the empire, so the empire is now a small, insignificant hillock that is literally used to fill theatres like a freak show with the ted-talk esq scene at the beginning of the episode. Yes, with just like how only the small pack of ume is still visible the empire is still there. Moff Gidion was able to run his own small empire with a light cruiser in the outer rim because (like the mountain peak) the new republic ignored the outer rim, or thiught he threat insignificant because in the core worlds defended by the new republic fleet the threat is small, but in the iuter rim with little defences it was enough the turn systems. Likewise one small imperial agent in the heart of the amniaty programme was able to turn an individual who wanted to use clone techbology to better the galaxy (cloning new organs/modifying organs for the better) into a brain dead patsy because he a) knew too much, but also b) was arguing that the new republic shouldn't just be squandering tech just because it's imperial - it still works. One agent did that. Not an army, not a fleet. I also like to think of ume as an iceberg style analogy - at some point the multiple leveks if courasant will fall, and as those levels fall ume will seem like it's growing. But it's not growing. It's just there. Always has been. Amways will be - like the curruption forever at the heart kf the Republic.

The Mandalorian season 3 is an understandable struggle for the audience who wanted a simple story opposed to a larger story. It's easier to watch a Mandalorian and baby Yoda doing side missions that help them grow as characters and grow closer to each other more than a story about a Mandalorian that is grappling with the weight of leadership calling to him, while Grogu will deal with the repercussions of not becoming a Jedi and that the galaxy has a looming threat to deal with before its too late.

We are members of "the audience", and that's not what my friends and I wanted. Grogu leaving with Luke was an awesome end to a very cool arc. We hoped to see Din Djarin's story continue from there. Instead, we have some great threads related to the Mandalorians, to Gideon, and hints of Thrawn that are weighed down and diluted by the terrible Grogu-related stuff. I am puzzled as to why Grogu was immediately thrust back into the story after such a fine exit. The realist in me says it's because Grogu is cute and sells merchandise. That's not a good reason to involve a character in a story.

For a little bit I thought Pershing would become Wernher von Braun for the New Republic. An ex-adversary, now turned ally, helping the New Republic reach incredible potential. Like you described Pershing not really a good guy in a bad situation, von Braun basically allowed enslaved Jews to build his rockets that were use to bomb London. Later on, von Braun also took USA to the moon with his Saturn V rocket. Would have been interesting to see Pershing maybe start making a clone army for the New Republic, and see the First Order sabotage it. Would have been even better if the "secret" clone army project was on Centax-2, like it was in Legends.

People complaining about "fillers" or the couple of episodes in Book of Boba with Mando don't understand the story, probably haven't watched the clone wars or rebels where more Mandalorian story has more to offer and generally aren't connecting the dots. At least it's obvious to me where they seem to be going with all this. Boba wants to run Tatooine for obvious reasons they showed in that series and because he wants to build something that is more honor bound than the criminals who have run Tatooine before. Boba proved this to Mando when he helped him and at the end Mando returned the favor coming to Boba aid (this is the way). Bo Katan is also representative of this, and they talk about the other worlds that are/were run by Mandalorians but she is channeling her sister to try and reunite the Mandalorians and change from just always fighting into something more. Everyone keeps shading the Armorer and maybe she will turn on them but I'm reading it more as she is leading Mando to find his purpose, he's building allies and he found the waters and... so this sets up the return of a Mandalore to unite the factions and hopefully in a new way. Mando + Grogu = Tarre Vizsla. In fact after the last episode, I wouldn't be surprised if the research Dr. Penn did doesn't get injected into Mando making him at least force sensitive. I think that they will also ride the Mythosaur and change from fighting each other to uniting by the end of this season or next. This would be a huge advantage to the new Republic, the Frist Order/Empire want Mandalorians fighting each other which removes them from the playing field. Also, I think we'll see that this is how they link Ashoka, Mando, Admiral Thrawn, Sabine and Ezra.

I think the entire sequence on monument plaza also shows how happy the New Republic is to simply return to the Republic before it fell instead of make something better. They went back to looking exactly like the prequels, adding back the color and lights missing from Andor, so quick to get away from the toils of the siege. But it's probably a thin layer and Coruscant is weaker than it's been in a long time, with infrastructure in the mid levels not similarly repaired.

I think by filler people just mean the episode doesn't directly address the main plot of that show. This did, but only really at the beginning and end, not for the main bulk. It's the same for the Mando episode of Boba Fett - they addressed the wider Mandoverse stuff, but not the main plot of the Book of Boba Fett. That doesn't necessarily mean it's bad or good - some excellent episodes of shows are filler if you use that definition.

Well okay, buuuuuut ... Dr. Pershing, his cloning experiments, and Moff Gideon are deeply connected to the main plot of the show. Moff Gideon is the main antagonist, and if he's still around he's still after Grogu. Obviously Dr. Pershing's experiments concentrated on cloning with raw material from Grogu. Dr. Pershing has featured heavily in Grogu's story from the start. I had a thought about the episode inspired by a pal of mine. What if the imperial double agents work for Thrawn and the entire reassignment is a facade to gather loyal imperial forces on Coruscant undercover. There are several decommissioned Star Destroyers including equipment on the surface, which are also easily accessible. Furthemore, they can act directly if someone becomes a loose end. What if they gather to either start a terror campaign a la Ysanne Isard or we even get the Lusankya in canon, rising and manned by said imperial "good guys" to bombard Coruscant at point blank range, devastating it and Thrawn taking it as flagship. That's why the Republic decides to move the Senate around from world to world instead of staying on Coruscant, trying to avoid such a massacre again. In the end, the little peak has become a true mountain again with the city landscape around it blown to scrap. It would further set up the decisions made by the sequels and add galactic stakes to the show. Won't happen though but just imagine...

Star Wars is all about dramatic irony and recontextualization. Any new series’s place on the timeline is essentially another character in the show.

Re: Filler I think a lot of people expect shows nowadays to just be long-form movies. Whenever there's an episode that doesn't advance the main plotline, people deride the episode as 'filler'. But really, these are TV shows. Sure, we want the plot to go places, but episodic storytelling doesn't have to stay tied to one plot. It's OK to have episodes irrelevant to the main plot of the show; that's just TV. People may not be used to it anymore, but there was a time that episodes of a show barely related to each other at all, except for setting and characters.

To me the mountain represented something more. When the Taung fought their last stand on Courscant. There they faced the Battalions of Zhell on top of a volcano. When the Zhell approached, the Taung used the smoke and ploom of the volcano to ambush them one last time before their departure from the world. It was this conflict that coined the Mand'oa term: "Dha Werda Verda" Rage of the Shadow Warriors Any true Vode knows this tale. This is the way, Vode An.

@@hellotherecreations3118 I'm not so sure if this is the exact peak or mountain. Or if it is canon anymore, but the fact as they say, "It is there." Gets the mind and imagination stirring regarding both Mand'oa fans of the Mandalorian culture, and SW Legends lore fathoming and contemplating. I'm not happy with how they portrayed both the Professor, and the New Republic. But to see this tib bit in the episode was eye candy and an exciting moment to see in the episode.

@@timothyhenegar7484 I agree with you on the professor and the New Republic, and I wasn't saying that this is the same mountain. It was still a spectacular treat that means different things to everyone. I never thought I'd see the day when we'd actually SEE some of Coruscant's surface, and therefore, the ancestral home of Mandalorians.

actually if someone says filler it means the episode can be summed up in an "and" sentence. Bo Katan joined the covert and the doctor got executed/lobotomized. You can add depth to your characters by progressing the plot, they didn't, they showed a full minute of talking about a mountain top for a "please dont touch the art" joke

I strongly agree with the recent @RobotHead review regarding the disappointment of seeing the New Republic acting as horribly as the Empire in this episode only in a more inept, unthinking way. I'm happy to see the developments in the show but wish they would get back to the level of story telling that was once considered basic. ie: show, don't tell.

This episode really surprised me. I thought Dr Pershing would be important for the plans of the new order and Palpatine, but now it seems that he is kinda dead or at least his memory wiped out. I wonder how they will carry this storyline out and how it will affect the story of Mando and Grogu. I'm confident that the authors have something in mind. I have just one question now. If the whole planet is covered with steel and concrete, where comes the air to breathe from?

I think people mistake filler and lore building, if it tells you more about the background and adds some value, it is not filler. Filler has to be almost completely irrelevant to the future of the story. Like episode 8. Some cool things here and there but really none of it accomplishes anything other than to give a reason why Luke dies and why most of the resistance is gone. They could've put the Holdo manoeuvre in at the start and made a proper movie.

Sometimes a mountain is just a mountain, and the meaning we give it is more thought than the original writer put into it. That being said, I think Umate in this episode, if it has a deeper meaning, probably represents the foundations of the Empire poking through into the New Republic. Yeah, the name has changed, there's some new faces running the place, but ultimately the back bone of the Empire's technology, governmental infrastructure, and society is still there. In the same way, the city of Coruscant, as different as it may appear from the way the planet used to look, still rests on the bedrock of the planet, and the planet's topography still plays a part in the design of the city no matter how subtle that part my appear.

a lot of people think Bo will go back to her old ways to try and rule Mandalore again i dont think she will though admittadly it will be a struggle within herself to not become her old self and allow the one who carries the dark saber to rule legitimately she more than likely feels responsible for the fall of Mandalor in the first place joining death watch and fighting the civil war if none of that had happened maybe her home world wouldn't of been glassed so easily as they wouldn't of had clones on the planet during order 66

I think there are really two separate questions: Did the writers *intend* for the episode to be filler, and did it *feel* like filler? I don't think they *meant* it to be filler. I think they probably have enough material written that they didn't just stick that in to kill time. And it was too much of the episode to just be filler. It seems to me that Elia Kane is being set up to be a major antagonist of the season. That's fine, but they should've introduced her in a way that didn't bring the actual story to a crawl.

It's funny, I thought it was moreso connecting to hoe Mandalore is actually, biologically, not cursed and has a sense of continuity in spite of a trauma (like the Dr.). Regardless I kinda though this arc would make more sense in a different show (maybe Asoka if she's hunting Thrawn and the remnant/NR clashing is central bc this season is set up to be all about Mandalore and this episode didn't convince me the b plot included the struggles of planets or governments) or at least a different episode where the connection between Mandalore's independence and the NR's problems is more relevant.
