The key selling point here is, aside of good transmission and good handling, natural responsiveness of the engine. No turbo, no additional muscles provided to you in low rpm by turbo, but instead beautifully linear motor power curve from medium to high rpm. Low rpms are intended for cruising here, and do not give too much power and torque, because of long time emphasis of engine manufactures including Mazda on lowering emissions. But medium to high rpms are enjoyable in this car. I got 2022 115hp top spec (mild hybrid - same as yours, with 6 speed manual transmission), and the car rides beautifully, especially with high quality E5 (petrol with 5% or less biological ethanol in it) 95 or 98 octane petrol with Millers Ecomax petrol power additive added to it during refuelling. The engine does not benefit from 98 or higher (100) octane petrol though in terms of power, because the engine is from factory tuned to benefit from 95 octanes at most. It is not sports car after all, but the engine can be retuned with 3rd party software for higher octane petrol optimal use at your own risk. But even at its factory state the engine benefits from using unadditived E5 petrol and separately added premium additive in terms of smoother engine function and calmer engine sound. E10 petrol (petrol with upto 10% biological ethanol) became standard this year in several EU countries, and while the engine works fine with it, smothest car performance you can get is still with pure unleaded petrol (zero or low ethanol content petrol such as E5 petrol) with high quality additive added to it by hand, such as Millers. Why should you use such petrol especially with Mazda? Because it has no turbo and one of its key selling points is the feel of naturally aspirated engine, and this feel can be raised by using correct fuel.

I have the 2020 90ps mild hybrid. Amazing to drive, no jerky noisy little turbo engine. And I’m currently on 56.4mpg. Quick enough day to day (quicker than any rival than any other petrol car that can offer this real world economy

@@filthydwarf do you mean reliability or drivability? Mine is manual, so I can’t comment on the auto. The manual shift is so satisfying to use. You have to downshift to accelerate, because peak torque is high in the rev range. I’m fine with that (because I enjoy driving). I prefer it to turbo engines. There is a 6th gear that is exclusively for cruising and offers no ability to accelerate whatsoever, but this gear makes it so efficient when cruising. E.g. I managed 74mpg on a drive a few days ago.

This is a better car than the Polo/A1 or ,208 . The Suzuki swift is as good from a reliability view point but the interior quality is not as good (but it is cheaper than the Mazda.) As a long term purchase the Mazda is a better bet due to it's superior reliability over a Polo/A1 or 208. The Honda Jazz or Toyota Yaris are also worth a look but offer a different kind of driving experience . My choice would be a Suzuki swift due to it's value and they are bringing out an updated model Good review thanks.

@@CarandDrivingCarReviewsGreat review. Can you please help. Would you rather buy Mazda 2 Homura eskyactive 90PS manual in platinum quartz color, or Suzuki Swift Sport hybrid 129ps manual? Both new cars. Mazda feels more premium inside, and Suzuki looks more atractive from outside. Swift is turbo and Mazda naturally aspirated so obviously Suzuki pulls harder but I dont know what is ride comfort. People complain about sport seats in Suzuki and they are kind of too small. Car will be used as a daily driver by my wife. Cant make up my mind and this is the last chance to buy these two small cars with proper 4 cilinders. Please help

Comparing this to a A1 is a bit up there , its a premium car and its up there in price but its not luxury. This car is for persons who want a premium hatchback but want something more exciting inside and out than the oatmeal that is a Polo. I get the comparison with a Swift(like the fact you guys used the picture of the new one)but this thing is premium and the Swift as good as it is, not so much.

Thai factory? I was led to believe all UK cars where produced in Japan. My '22 Mazda 2 has a VIN starting JMZ which seems to support this.

Yes. My 2018 (UK spec) also has a J vin number. So Japanese built. As far as I was aware Thai built versions are for South East Asian and Australasian markets.

I hate this new trend of cars not having spare wheels. The number of times I've had to change my tire due to a careless person leaving screws on the ground! I would hate to have to wait for an expensive tow truck.

Before buying it might be worth considering Mazda's prospects as a company. Although they are part owned by Toyota, they're small and arguably on a track to nowhere with their specialist engine technologies and avoidance of EVs. Electric Viking thinks they might be sold to a Chinese company eventually
@jdmguy44
@jdmguy44 4 ай бұрын
Not sure what Electric Viking is smoking! Toyota already own a share in Mazda and have an increasingly close alliance. They've just signed up to a three way partnership with Subaru and Toyota as well. The only company likely to buy out Mazda would be the biggest player in the automotive world that already part owns them. Toyota.

@@jdmguy44 yes you might be right - I'm getting more suspicious of E Viking and his anti-legacy automaker agenda nowadays
