So many people, including myself are concerned that the rumored specs for the Nintendo Switch are far too anemic to make it a viable competitor and third party platform for companies to develop games for. Fanboy here, but gotta agree on a lot of points. Specs (and overall developer friendly hardware) do matter, for the sake of giving devs resources to actualize the games they want to make without too many compromises. This will determine how much of the Third Party multi-platform heavy hitters can be ported.

If the Switch has "low specs", then it's success will be determined by how the market and industry view the machine. It will fail if it's regarded as an alternative/replacement to the PS4, XOne, because it can't compete with those specs-wise. But if it's viewed as an additional gaming device akin to 3DS/Vita, as something that's bought to complement other gaming needs and offer different gaming experiences to the Big Home Consoles, then it might as well be a hit.

Not every Wii owner bought WiiU, not every WiiU or 3DS owner will buy Switch. But by combining both markets the potential is much higher. Nintendos own output will be better because they aren't split across two platforms, and even if the Switch isn't super powerful its still much better than the 3DS so I think will get decent support from third-parties, just not necessarily ports.

You can't compare the Handheld market with the console one. Had both systems, both are great, the vita lacked support for Sony, and I lament to inform you, but Vita's limiting hardware with proprietary cards was the biggest cause for it to fail alongside marketing,

I was kind of hoping that it'd at least have a little power added to it. In the same area as the Xbox One at least. This is just a rumor and that still might happen. Raging Golden Eagle Sadly, I see this being a huge hit with the casual crowd. (Sad because I have to pay for a handheld feature that I'll never use, and that feature may impact third-party support) People love playing home console experiences on the go for some reason. I can't immerse myself in the world of Zelda and then put it down to walk my dog because when I'm outside, I usually have a reason. I don't have to be playing a game 24/7.

It may be what we want, but its not the main selling point for everyone. I'm not generally a Nintendo fan, so all I want is to be able to play some Switch exclusives (remember, third-parties still make some games on 3DS that aren't on other platforms) at least as good as WiiU. That in itself is a HUGE jump over 3DS. For third-party AAA titles, I'd much prefer to play on PC. I have been playing Fallout 4 on a 10" 768p thanks to Steam in-home streaming. Quite frankly, I can't imagine playing it on a 6" screen, its really too small. I find it awkward on less than about 13". So bottom line, I think Switch is going to be fine even if this turns out to be true.

DownrightSuperb Ok, the devices sold well, but the 3rd party support was shit. They had a lot of it, but no quality. The only games worth playing on those consoles were Nintendo games or games from developers that always make games for them. But that strategy obviously doesn't work anymore. People have smartphones now, so all the casual players went mobile. You could see that very clearly with the Wii U and the 3ds. The devices didn't sell nearly as much as the shoulde have. Though the 3ds managed to get some devices sold after a year, the Wii U failed completely. Nintendo needs the 3rd party support to keep the crowd interessted in their console, because they only can produce a limited amount of games a year.

I honestly don't know about this rumor. Contradicts Nvidia's official statement and other developers opinions. Let me list some before you guys insult me: According to Nvidia's blog, they said that they're gonna use one of their best graphics card for the Switch. Obviously gonna be a custom, so the specs will vary. But if it's gonna be that weak, then it contradicts what they're saying. Bethesda is always talking crap about Nintendo, and I don't blame them. Nintendo consoles nowadays aren't powerful at all. Bethesda makes games that are very tech demanding, but Nintendo systems can't run their games. But now seeing Bethesda praising a Nintendo system for once? That's clearly a sign that Bethesda is actually happy with the hardware. With the release of the Wii U, a lot of 3rd party companies complained about how difficult it was to port PS3/360 games to the Wii U. And again, I don't blame them. The Wii U used a completely different architecture than the PS3/360, so it made it harder for developers to port games on. (And that's also why the ports ran worse than their original counterparts.) And to make matters worse, Nintendo didn't help them at all. They gave them multiple Wii U dev kits that didn't use final hardware, so it made it even more difficult for developers. But now with the Switch, they're actually saying that it's very easy to port PS4/One games to the Switch. And even has Nintendo's help this time. EA, Ubisoft, and even 2K Games says so, which in the past also criticised Nintendo. So there you go, my reasons why I think this rumor is false. But who knows, maybe it can be real. If it is, then yes, the Switch will fail.

Ninten dude789 There are 2 possibilities that I can think of that can resolve the discrepancies between this rumor and the confirmed info we've been given... 1. This rumor is false, or 2. The rumor is true, but the chipset has been highly optimized by Nvidia to make up for the lower clock speeds. People are assuming that low clock speed = weak system, but that isn't necessarily true. Most of the people commenting here and across the internet are not tech savvy people, and don't really understand what makes a system powerful. They simply see lower numbers and assume the worst.

Actually when gaming the NVIDIA Shield TV GPU doesn't boost to 1 GHz for an extended amount of time , it stays around 768 MHz, which is that Switch does in docked mode. Still has a CPU clock speed deficit though.

Philp Yung Still, if you can downscale or even rerender a PC game onto the switch, it should be fine, graphics at this point have almost become a footnote to most gamers (look at the CineMassecre Video on the PS4 and Pro comparison). But again, Teraflops aren't everything. I would expect an over clocked system when on the stand. Performance isn't a big issue when portable, it already blows the 3DS and vita (lol) out of the water. It at least seems the CPU and RAM will be better used on the Switch, Nintendo Specs often are misleading since their OS is highly optimized unlike the competition and has few background processes when playing the game. It seems current Gen games will work on it, I'm worried more that the PS5 and Scoripio kill the Switch like the Dreamcast because developers don't bother with the game for the switch. On the other hand, if shit freezes over, they could miniaturize the tablet section and sell it as a portable system or as a budget tablet.

Rich and I are the same age, and every thing he's saying about Nintendo's 20-year history of making shit decisions is absolutely spot on. The original NES was a groundbreaking console, and the Super NES was in a different league altogether, a truly incredible machine with a slew of great classics. At the same time, Nintendo was cleaning up in the portable market with the original Gameboy. The terms "Nintendo" and "video game" were basically interchangeable to many people at the time. The company could simply do no wrong, from a consumer and a hobbyist's perspective. Then came the Nintendo 64. And they shot themselves in the foot. Don't get me wrong, there are some incredible classics on that console. I owned one. But I also owned a PlayStation, and there were FUCK ton more games for it, and with games/franchises like Final Fantasy, Resident Evil, Metal Gear Solid, Gran Turismo, Tekken, and so many others available, Sony just mopped the fucking floor with Nintendo (AND Sega!). And as the years went on, and each new console got released, it just became clear that Nintendo didn't seem to be learning from its previous mistakes. That's why people like myself and Rich are so passionate about it--we're frustrated because Nintendo used to be THE FUCKING SHIT. The younger cats in here don't get it, NIntendo WAS video games for a lot of people, they really were on fire. Now they're just crashing and burning. It's painful.

Preach man. You are dead on. They should have learned from the N64 era of the need to appeal to adults, and of the sheer importance of 3rd party support amongst other things. There really is nothing else for me to add though. I'm passionate about this for the same reasons. GameCube and the GBA are my all-time favorite consoles and ever since the Wii was released (I was 16 in 06)...I knew the company I loved would never be or wouldn't be the same for a long long time, and I was right. What blows my mind is, Nintendo used to bring powerful hardware to the market (Snes>256 simultaneous colors, Genesis>64) (N64>90mhz cpu PS1>33mhz) (GameCube>Ps2, Xbox was more powerful but GC was def still within the league/generation and it didn't mean that much at the time) Note: (to be fair the Gen processor was 2-3x more powerful; but that's besides the point, Nintendo wanted to beat them in visual clarity on screen which they did and we'd never see the same behavior today...)

i'll be honest, this rumor might be false because of 2 reasons: 1. According to this link from Nividia themselves: blogs.nvidia.com/blog/2016/10/20/nintendo-switch/ They are using a custom chip based on their best performing current geforce graphics cards, which is referring to pascal architecture, which was in development before the announcement of the switch (when it was codenamed NX). these rumors contradict with nividias statements. 2. if the portable side does in fact perform worse than Wii U when undocked, than how come zelda: breath of the wild, performed and ran smoothly despite the bad lighting on the stage in the fallen show? again, that evidence contradicts this rumor. this is why, unlike eurogamers past rumors, might actually be false, but again, it might be true, but might not be true

If you'll not write me off as a nintendo fanboy (I don't even like them generally), I would like to make a defense about Nintendo not wanting to compete with Sony and Microsoft. What is the difference between the PS4 and the Xbox One? Like, seriously, let's break this down - aside from exclusives, what does one have that is a spectacular leg up on the other? At the end of the day, these are hunks of hardware designed to play games, and there aren't any truly defining features between these two things. So that leaves whoever does better as a workhorse the superior product, right? yes, 100% true. Now the real problem with this is that the XBone and PS4 aren't the only workhorses on the market, and they aren't even in the fucking running if consider higher end gaming PCs. Any PC can far outmatch the XBone and PS4 in performance, accessibility, freedom (mods), budget (build a PC, Steam sales, etc) and so on. Competing with the PC is a fruitless endeavor when the PC is just going to keep winning harder and harder as the years go by. Nintendo doesn't want to compete with PCs. By making this a portable system, they have offered something to the consumer that PCs, XBones, and PS4s cannot offer by design, meaning that the Switch will not be a direct competitor with them. I have no idea what the Switch's capabilities will be, but even if they do turn out to be very disappointing, it will be at the potentially worthy cost of being a totally portable system that can be taken on the go. Would I be happy if the Switch could compete in terms of power? Absolutely, but that wasn't really Nintendo's goal with this system - otherwise they would've just made a regular system with no portable feature or gimmick.

Meh, thing is Nintendo's strength has always been it's franchises. And Nintendo absolutely dominates the handheld portable market, outside of Android devices. I don't think any current gen dev sweatshop could be at that kind of low level of software engineering now. It was probably true in NES and SNES though even there only for the parts actually concerned with assembling the scene A game is actually more than graphics (in a technical sense)! Graphicsl effects (that compute) are coded in a shader language mostly nowadays (effects generated from CPU get rarer and rarer). These are the parts you have to change. Downpoly models, create new mipmaps, downsize textures. Reduce complexity of effects (some of which actually are easy. Reduce number of passes, reduce depth, reduce amounts of "rays" (not like that actually) cast for shadowmapping, lighting, etc.) Maybe even forget about very expensive shaders.

Well said, I've been saying these things ever since the N64 came out, where Nintendo had a chance to make their N64 CD-ROM based, instead of Cartridge based. That’s why I went with original PlayStation instead of N64 back then. I knew that the N64 wasn't going to be able to compete with the original PlayStation in the long run. Besides the fact that the original PlayStation could play games back then, I liked the fact that the original PlayStation could play my music CDs as well, etc. I also liked how the PS2/Xbox could play DVDs, etc. vs. the GameCube which couldn't. The former systems gave me more for my money and gave me more reason to buy them (as well as helped saved space in my living room). Thus, these are more reasons why hardware could matters sometimes as much as the games do.

Here's something else to think about. Microsoft has stated that games on the scorpio will be compatible with the base xbox one. so basically they will be downgrading their own games to run across all their platform's. that is basically what third party developers will be doing with the Switch. yeah it won't be as powerful as the scorpio or ps4pro but it at least run modern games. plus you get the best first party games as well as the portable aspect which the competition doesn't offer.

Although TFLOPS do matter in some cases, and I am not supporting any side, but I am just saying this, most of the time, TFLOPS don't matter much. For example, the R9 Fury X has 8.9 TFLOPS, and it doesn't perform as well in most cases to the GTX 1070, which has only 6.5 TFLOPS. So possibly, even though the TFLOPS are lower than the base Xbox One and PS4, the Tegra chip may possibly outperform them, but we will have to see.

Tegra X1 does 512 GigaFLOPS, not 1 TFLOPS as you state in the video. It does 1 TFLOPS only in reduced accuracy of Floating Point 16 (FP16). XBox One and PS4 uses Floating Point 32 (FP32), which Tegra X1 only does 512 GFLOPS. Compared to XBO, Switch will do about 1/3 (accounting for difference between NVidia and AMD FLOPS) of FLOPS docked, and about 1/8 of XBO on batteries. Please note that's just regarding GPU shader performance.

It's likely that even if the system has such specs: the launch sales and games might be quite nice to due to rather viral spread of hype on the internet on any Nintendo topic (the hype train is perpetually generated here). And that might be enough to get the system going for a while initially but unlikely to get it to be too competitive during the 8th gen, and certainly not enough for the 9th. The underpowered specs will limit the more demanding 3rd Party available on the system meaning this will limit future sales. So this will likely be a repeat of the Wii U.

Over the course of about 6 years, the Nintendo 3DS has sold over 60 million units. It sold about 15 million in its first year. Yea, they're saying this system is "home console" first, but come on. Look at its marketing. The casual market and, really, the same market that devoured the 3DS is going to see that and think "Oh! Nintendo's next handheld! POKEMON!" Is this system going to get the kind of success the Wii had? No. I doubt that will ever happen for Nintendo again. Will this console do better than the WiiU? I most certainly think so, even if it is underpowered. Yea, being underpowered may likely scare many 3rd party console developers away, which will definitely damage the hardcore crowd (AGAIN), but, like I said, the casuals and handheld-users likely wont pay as much attention to that as they will to "OMG Awesome looking Pokemon! Portable Zelda!" One thing that has me looking up as far as this console goes, is I have several friends and coworkers who didn't have a Wii OR WiiU, but they're saying they totally want to get a Switch at launch. If anything, Nintendo's marketing seems like it's going to push this console's sales past the WiiU's even if its specs don't. Either way, I'll be getting one for sure. I'm actually thinking of buying two, one for my parents. (Mom likes Zelda)

^ Ignoring the 12 y/o up there, I agree, Sachi Game, that the Switch will do better than the Wii U but doing better than the Wii U doesn't take much. You're right to a degree in that a market will look at the Switch and think to buy it just for Mario, Zelda, and Pokemon, but those people are not casual gamers. They are Nintendo fans. Zelda is not a casual game, nor is the Smash series. Mario and Pokemon most definitely are but only Pokemon seems to sell systems now. Mario has really gone down in popularity, which is why Nintendo is introducing him to the App Store, a TRUE casual market. But as I said, the people buying the Switch for 1st party titles are Nintendo fans. And those people are dying out. I used to get excited for Nintendo consoles. In fact, I've owned every single one since the N64. But this may very well be the first Nintendo console I will not buy, and if I do buy it, it will be used. I know Nintendo's tactics in fooling gamers with reveals for their new consoles. I know the lies spread with every single console since the Gamecube about how amazing Zelda games will look. I will not fall for that again. I'm glad you'll get the Switch, but I and many more gamers each year are turning away from Nintendo's consoles because we know they will inevitably be underpowered and even their games will disappoint in some ways.

GC was less than half of PS1? I thought for sure GC was bigger than PS1. And as for storage size, aren't 360 disks less than half of the PS3 discs? That didn't seem to be a problem for publishers.

JLndriX There are games on the PS1 that were more than 2 discs. Also, there were hundreds of PS2 games that came on CD and not DVD and those have less storage than a Gamecube disc.

The only thing about it running at 40℅ is that that is the exact amount needed to run it at 720p versus 1080p. The drop in processing can simply be attributed to a graphics drop.

0.3 terraflops difference isn't really enough to have a hissy fit over. I think the base PS4 is 0.5 terraflops more powerful than the Xbox One but they just port the exact same games over to it no problem.

Sorry I'm just thinking out loud. It has also been rormored that the switch can display at 1080p when its docked; it can render around 2 million pixels, and can only display at 720p when it not docked which is around 900 000 pixels, which is about 45 percent of the amount of pixels when you're displaying at 1080p. Should we be really be that worried? The less pixels you render the less power you need right? I could be wrong.

Laura Kate Dale tweeted out that even with the Switch undocked, it's still more powerful than the Wii U. Also, what's interesting is that the Shield TV which has higher clock-speeds, can be cooled passively while the Switch requires a heatsink and a fan even with the supposed low clock-speeds. From what i see I'm going to get it. Have my word on it it's gonna be a good console. I hope it's 720p 60fps instead of 30fps on the go or at least have an option to change into 1080p 60fps. People are going to get it since it's home/handheld hybrid and it needs 3rd party support if they don't want people to stop using it after the first week of buying it. I also don't want to buy ps5 or Xbox 2 (I don't know why they would name their 4th Xbox xbox 2 but hopefully they don't) I want to have all the games I need (Xbox and ps exclusives aside) or want.

The WiiU did fail. Nintendo have already said they are stopping production of the console. Their were months and months in gaps on Triple A games on the system. The sales are still only in the 13 millions. Nintendo have reported losses for years due to the WiiU. The fact Nintendo focused more on the 3DS, than the WiiU also displays that they knew it was a fail.

Rich, The switch is gonna kill it. Nintendo is on a roll right now. Pokemon is killing it, 3ds systems are sold out everywhere I live. Once pokemon comes out on the switch, it's over. That system will be hard as hell to find. The Wii U was basically a prototype of the Switch.

Why do people keep saying 1tflop? The tegra X1 has 512 Gflops of fp32 performance which is what all the other consoles numbers are based off of. Only using fp16 does the x1 have ~1 tflop. Sony tried to use that fp16 stuff to claim the ps4 pro had 6+tflops after scorpio said it was more powerful then the pro. They will be able to take advantage of that fp16 performance in areas that don't need high precision but it will not make up all the ground.

I learned a lot from this video and I have a lot to think about. Thanks for the interesting viewpoints and things to consider, the consequences of specs make a ton of sense when explained in this way. I think at this point the only think the switch has going for it is the possibility of its mobility and its console exclusives. The exclusives can push a decent amount of copies but I can't say I have faith the mobile gaming aspect will pan out that well. I think I will still buy a switch personally. I haven't owned a nintendo console since the gamecube or 3DS if you count that, and am really interested with Breath of the wild, the game looks like a "must have" so far.

I think people are forgetting we are talking about a *portable* console. If you guys are expecting a portable PS4 Pro, or Xbox Scorpio etc... you are out of your mind! I want the Switch to be as powerful as possible, especially if we can start getting third party AAA games again on a Nintendo console. Honesty between PC and Nintendo, you have a wide berth covered, minus Xbox and PS Exclusives. I know people love talking about rumors, but it is pointless until Nintendo and/or Nvidia release more information.

Luckysquirrel1256 You do know the majority of people don't care about the portable aspect of the system. People are referring to the docked Nintendo Switch, if games run average when docked then people aren't going to buy it. It will be the same people that bought the Wii U that will buy the Switch for the first year, and then if things are looking good then other consumers might be interested but I have little hope that this system will learn from the Wii U's mistakes as Nintendo are keeping quiet on the exact hardware specs and we dont know what the interface or online features are when the system is coming in 3 months

According to Shokio on KZbin, the Switch will get developer support because it is compatible with the latest API tools. So games made for PS/Xbox with those tools can somewhat scaled down to run on Switch as opposed to rewritten
