Back in the 60s stuff was different, you can afford to buy a house, weed didn't blow your head off and you could pick up a consumer-grade camera that was actually good.
I took the Trip 35 for a spin to get a little taste of the swinging sixties. I took a look at how to use it, checked out if it was any good and cover some little secrets too.
If you enjoyed this then that's great, if you didn't then I'm going to be really upset.

Another fine little detail: There is a datecode inside the camera, underneath the little plate/film guide attached to the back. Together with the shutter button (if it is plastic or chrome plated) and a little help from the Internet you can decode the month and year of assembly.

Turns out, the Trip is really similar in construction to the Pen EE series. Thanks to your video I've learned how to bypass the dead selenium meter on my EE and still use the 1/200 speed, using the half press ISO to the aperture part of the ring. As far as I can tell, you're the only source on the internet who found this out. Thanks

Thanks a lot, I’ve actually got to thank someone on Reddit for this, there’s a pretty in depth post from someone on there. I did notice that nobody else had noted it at all though so I’m really glad it’s helpful! 😎

I had two of these that I gave to my daughter, these are very fine cameras with excellent optics. I myself have a 35 RC and 35 RD, and a few Leica Ms. BTW, and please don't take it as a criticism but human a eye has an angle of view of about 80+ degrees or the FOV of a 24mm lens in the horizontal and not the 50mm that has incorrectly been propagated, nor 50mm is the ' standard ' lens for 135 mm format. The standard lens for any format is defined as a lens with an FL equivalent to the hypotenous of the film format which in the case of 135 is about 42mm. So the Trip, 35 RC, 35 RD and 35 DC have the 40/42mm FL lenses, but not the same lens. To understand which lens design Olympus used you have to look at the letter before the Zuiko name on the front of the lens. In case of the 35 Trip D.Zuiko denotes a 4 elements lens design. For my 35RC it is E.Zuiko meaning 5 elements, 35 RD has the F.Zuiko 6 elements lens and the top of the range SP has the F.Zuiko meaning a 7 elements lens. Good review BTW.

Finally my quest to obtain one is over! I picked up an almost pristine example for a very reasonable price and the seller even threw a roll of film in. It's everything I hoped it would be and more... Just have to film test it now! 😊

Nice video. I have this camera and I really like it. The light metering maybe is a bit off (old), I tested with a light meter in my phone. With 400 ISO film I set it to 100 ISO and it works great. I loved the contrasty and sharp BW photos with Fomapan 400. It is sad that in Finland the films and especially the developing and scanning are so expensive. Must take my Trip out soon again.

The Trip 35 was always known for favouring highlights. The trick from back I'm the day was to set the iso at half the box speed and use the highlight retention of print film.

Great video. Love the anecdote about your brother and the sand 🤣 For some reason the counter of how many shots you have isn’t moving when I take the photo and not sure what’s happening? I’ve reloaded a bunch of time and it’s a brand new camera so i don’t what to do 🥲 Help please!?

If its not too late, get an olympus 35RC, often cheaper, better lens, more manual controls and a sweet film advance lever

I found my mums old Trip 35 a short while back and took it away with me to Budapest and Prague. Loaded it with some Portra 400 and away I went. I haven’t got the shots back yet so no idea how badly I’ve used it yet!

@@maxkent It's finding a good working one for a reasonable price, the ones I'm seeing are like £100 - £150, in my opinion that's way over priced..😲😳

Hi, I’ve been using this camera for a few months now but I’m still having a problem with the zone focusing. People kept saying that its easy to use, but its the opposite for me. I’ve also had it fixed before for the lens alignment and the shots are better than the old ones, but most of them are still out of focus. Any tips for this? Or, maybe there’s still a problem with the camera?

I rate 400ASA to 200ASA unless I’m shooting a lot of sky, leave on 3m or 3 people for general shooting let depth of field fix the focus so may be if you’d rated the film at 100ASA and not shot skys the expose would be improved..

nice camera, but not easy to find one in working condition, the shutter is prone to fail with age.

Not just the shutter. The selenium cell will deteriorate if the camera has been stored uncovered. Very long exposure to light will cause this. If it has been stored with a cap, or in a closed box, it will not exhibit this.

Olympus Trip 35 shits on any modern film camera? The Leica MP, M-A and M6 re-issue would like a chat haha. Trip 35s are really nicely made and easy to work on, I serviced I think six of them in a day for a local shop and they all worked great after. I'm personally not a fan of zone focusing so I don't think I own any anymore but yeah great little cameras. Anything with a Zuiko lens is a winner, a big fan of my OM1/XA/Pen F's.

Haha, okay, I’m referencing the Ultra F9s of the world, not the Leica MP! Zone focusing isn’t great and that’s obviously one of the trip 35s many limitations that we’ve kinda gotta forgive. Thanks for watching Dorian 😎

I've given up with film photography to be honest. Buying a film camera nowadays that is actually working as it should has become a physical impossibility. These camera's are old and have had their day, pains me to say it, but it's true. I've gone back to digital I'm afraid, its far easier.
