My Speedmaster is still the favourite watch in my collection. I'm a lucky guy as my wife purchased it for my 50th birthday. Didnt know how I'd get on with the manual wind but now its part of its charm. Definitley a keeper.

I was born a few weeks after the first moon landing, so of course this has been my holy grail watch. Came close when I turned 50, but kids college tuition came first, so I settled for the Bulova Lunar Pilot. Now, 18 months later, tastes have changed, and I’m all about getting a GMT, most likely a Christopher Ward, or with a little patience, the Tudor Black Bay GMT.

I’m not a chronograph guy, but I’d absolutely consider a Speedie. Given that I have smaller wrists, the 39mm First Omega In Space would be my ideal Speedie, followed by the Hesalite Man On The F-ing Moon. Great review, J!

I bought one back in 1976 which has the acrylic crystal. It is still functional, however it does not have Bluetooth to connect to my phone.

This is based off the 321 (a simplified version of the 321) which is what Patek based alot of their calibers off of. The 321 is a hard to produce movement which is why the new 321 speedmasters are demanding more of a premium. I think people get that mixed up alot. 1861/3 =/= 321. It was also the 321 that was worn on the moon - not the 861/1861 IIRC - someone please correct me if I am wrong.
@Peter-Alexander2 ай бұрын
You are correct. Although I read the 861 flew around the moon in the command module. I don't know which Apollo flight that was. Maybe somebody knows?

Was a chronograph the requirement from NASA when they did their tests? If that's the case, maybe that's why the manual wind was the default selection as there wasn't an automatic chronograph on the market when testing first started.

@@BB-gl7zt NASA certification tests took place in 1965, first auto chronographs hit the market starting February 1969. So only hand winders were available for testing. The Seiko 6139 Pogue was on Skylab in 1973, I think, first auto in space, and worked fine.

I'm town between a speedy professional and a planet ocean 39.5. I've always planned on getting the speedy but if I did I'd probably get something else to wear daily, probably a black bay. Maybe even two additional watched. Sometimes I think I only need one watch though and the planet ocean probably fits that bill better

It just occurred to me that it would have been really helpful for the Moonwatch to have a power reserve indicator. But then again, where would it be located? Talk about a mission critical feature! If I was up there, I would have needed a few strategically placed notes around the cabin to remind me to WIND THE WATCH! Haha. --Michael
@JANTHONYCHANNEL4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that would be extremely helpful. Never thought about that before.
@KevinHuangPhasorQuantaG4 жыл бұрын
I think it was a lot more common to wind watches every day back then than it is now, such that it becomes a morning routine like brushing your teeth, so nobody really needed to be reminded to wind it.

If Rolex owned the Speedmaster it would being selling in the 8 to 10 grand range. I'm talking about the 1861 standard Speedmaster professional. The watch is the best priced watch on the market today and I think Omega will discontinue it and replace it with the co axial movement at a 3 thousand price hike.
@MrMatt19234 жыл бұрын
For being a manual winding watch. NASA found the watch and tested it and put it in space, it wasn’t designed to be a space watch. It was a racing watch first.

This is the most iconic watch in history. The worst problem is the lack of resistance yo water. 😎🤔
@Pete...NoNotThatOne4 жыл бұрын
I hear that a lot, and counter thusly; no you can’t dive with it, but it is gasketed and has rated 50m water resistance. Extreme humidity and immersion was part of the torture tests at NASA, because astronauts always splashed down in the ocean, so this had to be able to stand up to reasonable water immersion. Besides, if you need to go diving, grab your Seiko.
