The Oscars this year were an absolute joke, and not just for the reason you're all probably thinking. The animation industry deserves respect, and having it relegated to the kiddies table on the stage that is meant to celebrate the arts is utterly demeaning.

The thing that got under my skin was them choosing the live-action princesses to hand out the award. Like "yeah animation is for KIDS but we're in the live-action versions, which makes them an adult thing, even though they usually just tell the exact same stories beat for beat."

The first rule of remakes is that, for better or worse, they will ALWAYS be compared to the original. A natural corollary to that rule is that if the remake is not regarded as "clearly better" than the original, it will always be treated as the "inferior version" (even if the movie is solid from a technical perspective).

So I'm an animation major, and so I had to learn about the history of animation for school. What a lot of people don't get is animation started for ADULTS. Its when people started making children friendly animation that people started associating it for kids. I've had people come up to me and be like why do you like animated movies? Animation is for kids, grow up. I'm so freaking tired of people talking badly about animation. Animation is for EVERYONE. I also feel like the speeches for the animation section was a giant middle finger to the animation industry. Its like "Hey! I haven't seen any of the movies expect Encanto because of my kid." Its like you know the makers of those films are there right? Words can't describe how rude that was. Plus the fact that they had the live action princesses come out is like what others are saying below. Its pretty much coming off as animation is for kids, but live actions are for adults! Which is bullshit. Saying that kids watch these films over and over again isn't funny, its just plain rude. The last thing I will say is when people talk badly about animation I feel like sometimes people forget that its the adults working on the movies, not kids. So the next time someone talks badly about the medium they should think about these points first. Its ridiculous.

Both of them are difficult and it’s always infuriating how none of these “experts” in the movie industry (being experienced actors and such) think beyond their little bubble about what actually goes into making what they see on screen. Far as I'm concerned; true entertainment is dead. Sure there's a gem in there every now and again, but it gets disregarded by the "but the chart says" people. Hence we lost actual great series like The Owl House getting cut short because, apparently, people don't want to watch an episodic show because viewers might tune in at a specific episode and not know what's happening... He did the same for Collodi's 'Pinocchio', at least for the most part because, aside from altering the book's sequences and characters, the infamous donkey sequence has to be the one sequence that stays true to the tone of the book the most. The one difference, however, is that Disney's Pinocchio escapes the island only partially transformed while the Pinocchio in the book fully becomes a donkey and gets captured along with the other kidnapped boys. Also, in case you haven't heard, Guillermo del Toro is producing his own stop-motion animated version which will be released in this year's Christmas season. Hope he takes fewer liberties than Walt.

I AM NOT JOKING. they scoff at me when i say i want to get into animation, writing and video game development because they think it is a waste of time. Right in front of my uncle who was (and still is) a professional artist, specializing in digital art, clay sculpting, Bronze Sculpting, and oil painting, and was trying to teach me the basics when i was a kid. I literally have no clue why they have had this mindset because when i was 4 i was being harrassed by my preschool teacher who kept trying to single me out as stupid when i was asked what i wanted to be when i grew up. I said Artist and they kept trying to argue with a 4 yr old why that wasnt an appropriate answer saying it was a job or hobby and not a career. And even trying to pick an "appropriate answer" for me themselves by saying i should be a janitor or a garbage man. My parents were there and argued if one kid wanted to be a superhero unicorn princess i had every right to say i wanted to be an artist. So how my parents ended up with that bitch of a teacher's mindset when i was being given private lessons by my uncle Is completely baffling. Even now they make me feel bad for wanting to be creative, trying to bond with my younger cousins and my niece who all are allowed to like cartoons even though the youngest of them is 12 and the eldest is 24. What frequently gets on my nerves is being talked down to for liking animation. You want to know what happened this week in animation? A superhero animated series used the word nonbinary when a character came out as such. I cry at the end of season two of Young Justice everytime I watch it and thinking about Wally's birthday episode is also a tearjerker. The series is animated but no less powerful. As for movies, Lilo and Stitch will always be one of my favorite films. I've seen almost every DC animated film on HBOMax and The Flashpoint Paradox's ending is touching. I have rewatched Justice League vs the Fatal Five because the story is powerful (a young woman with ptsd is called to be a Green Lanturn and ends up being an inspiration for a young man in the future with schizophrina who comes back to protect the young woman- watch it it's good). I could rant for days about this and bring up animated films and series that are more powerful than people give them credit for. That feels insulting that these women wanted to criticize animated movies as a movie just for kids that the adults have to put up with. Yes some animated movies are targeted kids only but most of them has some mature subjects and stories that parents could enjoy. They forgotten what their old boss said. "If you only write for kids you are dead. Adults are only kids in the inside." Its sad they lost that touch.

That nobody is singer Halle Bailey who is part of the R&B duo “Chloe x Halle” (Chloe is Halle‘s sister). The Holocaust was a crime against humanity, not the existence of a black Ariel. How dare you make that comparison! 😤 And if you think a black Ariel is going to ruin your childhood memories, then your childhood memories aren’t worth ruining. Besides, the Disney animated film already ruined the original Andersen fairy tale by having Ariel marry Prince Eric.

Here's my speech if I was to present the category: For many years, the art form known as animation has come a long. From the golden age with silly short cartoons, to now having a face to present an individual's vision through visuals. The nominees featured tonight have entertained, amazed and captivated millions from around the world. Their stories, either funny or breathtaking, have resonated to many nations and their civilians. No matter how old they might be.

It’s such a shame how so many times Animation and comics are always shown no respect and seen as “only for kids.” Despite many tackling serious and mature issues. Wether it’s general teams from Encanto, to the story of people trying to survive through harsh times like in the bread winner. Comics do it too, from many hero’s that had to deal with addiction, to societal issues and, various shades of trauma. Yet time and again it’s seen as just “kids stuff,” and both the story’s, medium, and creative team are never given the respect there due. Hopefully as more and more people shake off the stigma that adults can love both comics and animation the medium will finally be given the respect it deserves.

Let's be honest to the live action princesses on the stage. Those (kids) animated films that you are remaking still are ten times better then your (grown up)m live action remakes. Those animated films are a work of art with their animation, they are full of life with memorable characters we all become attach to, songs we are still singing today, and stories that can only be shown through this media. They should be respected for all the hard work people put in to create these stories. By thee way, the whole animation is only for kids.... show them Watership down, Coraline, Sausage party, 9, Grave of the fireflies, and Akira (Also the attack on titan anime and Legend of Vox Machina tv show)

Yeah. It's like, they are dismissive over animation being "too kiddy" but then, when confronted by something like The Plague Dogs or Sausage Party, it's always "Won't somebody please think of the children?"! It is so annoying and it gives the impression that some people just bash the medium simply for something to act above it.

This is amazing; animation isn't limited by age. And to add on, don't forget that it's adults who create animation, so during their process, they enjoy the work too. I also remember leaving a comment somewhere that the Hallie girl to play Ariel, how she has an amazing voice and did her part bringing out her "Ariel" when she sang for Disney's 50 anniversary. And then it got sad when someone replied, "she going to be the best Ariel," and while I believe she will, I stand by and say no one played out Disney's Ariel better than Jodi Benson (it's like say Will Smith was a better genie but no one really can top Robin's performance right?).

I don't think those actresses meant any insult when insinuating that animation is specifically catered towards kids (They're in Disney's payroll). Clearly there's lots of animation catered for adults (Rick & Morty, BoJack Horseman, etc.) But the biggest consumers of animation as a whole are in fact children, and that's not a BAD thing. Content made for kids are PROBABLY better than Content made for adults, because when done right, they can tell a very compelling, rich story without having to rely on "mature" themes, such as blood, sex and swearing. Also, as someone who enjoys very common things (Animation, Marvel Movies, Teen movies from the early 2000s) I kind of HATE it when people try to dictate what is and isn't "CINEMA" Come at me, film snobs, but I'd rather watch Coraline or Mean Girls again than have to sit through Tree of Life or any given Martin Scorsese movie.

If animation is suppose to be regulated to kids and adults have to endure THEN WHY THE F+Yay+k DID THEY MAKE THAT AWARD IN THE FIRST PLACE?! Animation is art and cinema is art. I'm an adult......and my favorites movies are ALL ANIMATED ones, I watch animated shows, animated films because they make me feel things and lot of emotions, that speech at the Oscars just highlight why I hate the Oscars and I haven't watched a single Oscars in my life, worst the fact that the 3 LIVE ACTION PRINCESSES of Disney talk down to animation in general as KID STUFF is kinda saying in a way why these live action films that most of us hate, are making more money than the classic masterpieces that precede them, it just felt wrong in all the ways, specially with Flee be on the nominations, that felt like an slap, and also the fact that on an award ceremony, own by ABC who is OWN BY DISNEY, presented by 3 current live action Disney princesses, the winner was a DISNEY MOVIE, makes it even worse, and yes Mitchells vs the Machines got robbed, is like we can't have 2 years in a row of any other studio winning this category, had to be DISNEY, OVER AND OVER AND OVER, kinda takes away the hard work of the animators put in Encanto, because you actually rooting for the other underdogs, you know Disney is taking this always, how selfish this company can't be?.....is shocking to me because you will think we PASS THIS......we have shows like ARCANE, hell even kids shows like AVATAR, HILDA, OWL HOUSE, STEVEN UNIVERSE, and there is plenty of ADULT animated shows like CASTLEVANIA or LOVE DEATH AND ROBOTS.....not counting everything done in the east, from literally EVERY ANIME SHOW OR FILM in existence, to the amazing work countries like French and Irish are doing (shout out to Cartoon Saloon and their masterful catalogue of amazing films)....you will think because of all that, that mentality is gone, hell the major money makers in Hollywood now are SUPER HERO FILMS, in essence...KIDS FILMS with Animated scenes (yes all those amazing fights in the DCEU and MCU are animated by animators), so how in hell is this mentality still a curse to this day is beyond me, this and so many reasons more is why I will forever never ever forgive the Oscars, for not even nominated YOUR NAME and a SILENT VOICE in the years those films where electable to be nominated...but BOSS BABY DID, I will never ever watch the Oscars, they don't deserve it, they are OUTDATED at this point, not just in the animation category, they are no longer the gold stander to judge what CINEMA IS............and Animation is indeed...............CINEMA.

There's a reason I never take the Oscars seriously, all they care about is if a movie ticks the right boxes and if the right movie comes out at the right time regardless of quality. At the end of the day the Oscars mean nothing and very few best picture winners are actually memorable and, you know actually good. They have gotten better, for example in 2019 the first non-English language film won best picture but they have a lot more work to do. I know animation is not a genre (it doesn't even fit the definition of a genre for a start) but it reminds me of how certain genres and types of movies are ignored by the Oscars. I mean not one science fiction film has won best picture (although 14 were nominated) and only 6 horror films were ever nominated for best picture (although out of those 6 some would fit more into the thriller category). Interesting fact, at the 1991 Oscars Beauty and the Beast lost best picture to The Silence of the Lambs which is a horror film so I guess 1991 was the year the Oscars went outside their comfort zone (Plus I personally prefer Silence of the Lambs over Beauty and the Beast but hey, that's just an opinion). Also many blockbusters are ignored, and while I can agree most blockbusters are crap or at least entertaining at best there are many that have stood the test of time and are regarded as classics (Back to the Future and Die Hard should have been at least nominated), also a fair amount of obscure and challenging films are ignored, I mean Talk Radio deserved the Oscar more than Rain Man, but Talk Radio didn't tick the right boxes and no one went to see it back in 1988 (yes I have a bias against Rain Man).
@KingdomHeartsBrawler
@KingdomHeartsBrawler 2 жыл бұрын
The way I see it, the fact that there's even a specific "animated" category goes to show how badly the Academy disrespects animation. Animation is not a "genre"; it's a MEDIUM. It's a style of filmmaking used to make a movie, just like live-action, or motion capture, or what have you. It doesn't matter what form the movie takes - a movie is a movie is a movie. As long as the Oscars retain a specific category to coop up animation in, it will never receive the respect it deserves in the West. Bottom line, this is why anime is better (and I'm no weeb). The Japanese actually respect animation and their output freaking SHOWS it. NOT IN A MILLION YEARS will Western animation have something like Neon Genesis Evangelion, at least, not in the current climate.

The animation bashing is tiresome. This whole vibe of "Cartoons for Kids Only" argument is presented in bad faith. In my 30+ years residing on Planet Earth I have seen many of animated films and live action films and the cinema that I will always go to when I have free time and want to watch something I will go to my streaming services or DVD collection and what I will watch is literally ANYTHING that has the Henson name attached to it. That family has shaped my life, Sesame Street in my early years during the day, evenings watching the Muppet Show, Saturday mornings with Muppet Babies, and being scared out of my mind when watching the early scenes of Dark Crystal and Labyrinth. However, the biggest show in my life was created on the premise to "Stop All Wars" with Fraggle Rock. The KZbin channel Defunctland Did an entire series about Jim Henson and co from Teenage years with Sam and Friends and the Wilcons Coffee ads to his Early departure of the world of the living. If a Pig and a Frog's Wedding can make NATIONAL NEWS then Animation IS Cinema and the Academy (along with the MPAA) needs to change for the future and stop trying to keep everything locked in the past.
When Did the Oscars Stop Respecting Animation?
