Why the pros play Maiev? (An Analytical look at pro play)

Maiev used to be the highest win rate on hotslogs now she is low, but she is still a threat in pro play, why is that?

Yeah but you have to tether 5 targets, hit all of them with fan and pull them all.

you only need to hit 2, land 1 AA and then 1 Fan of Knives that lands (if you took Blade Dance, which you should) that's 5 sources of damage. Though, now damage won't totally be as insane given that lv16 was nerfed

I'm learning her right now and I love her playstyle but you're dead on with this one. You have to be in a team to get anything out of her for sure. She can be an absolute game changer in ranked.

While Maiev's waveclear might not be comparable to some other heroes in terms of clearing things like the zerg wave, she does soak lanes very easily with her e as you can usually throw it through the minion waves and get its damage off twice. On top of that, while your Q doesn't get resets and refunds from minions, it's still only 4 sec cd with a low mana cost, so you're not really punished for using it for extra clear. The obvious downside of using e to clear waves is that you won't have your easy escape/engage available for a short period, but it's usually not a problem due to how safe range the ability has.

Exactly. Just played her today a couple of times, when she's not hard pressed being on lane she clears it very quickly in a way you just described. He should've said that she's not so good compared to better solo laners, on her own she's not bad.

At 25:20 she doesn't touch everyone with her q she missed it, but still got the physical damage so (no CD reduction)

finally hit level 15 with maiev. Learning her was real tough, 10 game losing streaks straight dropped my win rate with her to around 30%. Now my win rate with her went up to 51%. Still not as great but she is a decent hero. Her early game is really good because most heroes cant burst her down too quick. Casting e behind you, walking up to your opponents whole team and pressing D to avoid CC, then tethering 3 heroes and teleporting back is what i usually do to help get my stacks. i got 10 stacks in 3 minutes one time. But i notice shes terrible around late game because if you get targeted by the enemy team you literally melt. get CCed once or silenced its 60 second cooldown for you. still getting better at her though and what i will try now is not engaging the fights late game but flanking.

I played her on volskyaya and It was epic. Her ghost secured me 3 kills in mid game. By about level 17, we had be winning but not by much, against the enemy team we needed to finish it quick due to comps and the spike the enemy team would have with storm talents. So in this chokepoint by the camps we had a team fight. I ran in, tethered the full team. Popped my últ and we got the team wipe because of butcher having good stacks. Then we rushed the base and won

So no point in picking her in QM or HL since you're most likely to get uncoordinated teams. And then your gonna have to find a group of friends that's patient and willing to let you learn her so they know what to do.. Gotcha. I'll avoid her..

Why the pros pick Maiev? Well that is damn simple to answer... Cause she can crowd control your whole team prevents you from getting away while being extremely mobile and extremely safe in the same time. Oh and by the way she does INSANE AOE damage too, Funny momenta videos on youtube are full of Maievs deleting entire teams alone. Even after being nerfed so many times she is still like 3 heroes, her basic abilities are just better than the Ultimates of some other heroes.

I like the analytical videos of pro matches you do, but the team fights can be very hectic. Is it possible to play them at slower than normal speed instead, or in addition to, the pause/unpause stepping you do?

17:05 Actually this quest has no damage cap. Even after you complete it you still build up power with additional tethers. This is why I think this talent is so damn powerful. I've once had 40 stacks of this quest because I farmed it on a Samuro & Clones, and by the end of the game I was killing minion waves with a single cleave, dealing over 1k damage. It was awesome. 20:47 For a "pro team" this was a very amateur mistake. Plus, if they focused their attention on the left wall instead of the gate she could have escaped. It has way less health.

Easy, because Muradin has one of the best sustain of all tanks, he is the most mobile of all tanks he is very hard to catch in a chase which complements his amazing sustain. With avatar and stoneform plus all the stuns, slows and everything and he is one of the hardest heroes to tale down in a team fight and if something goes wrong he just jumps away.

I find this hero almost impossible to play, if I try to engage with my e as suggested in the video I have no escape, I'm as good as dead. whenever I engage as maiev Im instantly ganked to at least 20% health if not dead. I tried the burst build today and in non high ranks people just walk with you easily and don't get pulled or punished by your team for walking with you :( Just played a game with same build. by lvl 20 I had only managed to stack umbral 4 times lol. people just don't clump up enough to use it.

Some heroes just take coordination and teamwork that you're not going to get in normal matches. Pro matches and normal matches have a very different meta simply because of the communication and teamwork allowing for different comps and heroes to work better.

notparadox actually talks about the problem u are describing, regarding engaging with ur e as the only person. so try to wait for u team to start a fight and stay in range before that. just hit ur q a few times. oh and btw: ur w only stacks if u hit people with the cleave of it (i think notparadox actually said it wrong in the vid). so u gotta activate it and then autoattack a minion, a wall, or even the hero who is standing in front of a clustered team. to learn the needed combos and see a more detailed guide on her, just check youtube for "rich" (former player for genG) or for "spaßvogel". they both have guides for her on their channels. good luck on mastering her. p.s.: if u dont have so real follow up for wardens cage in ur team ( kaeltas, jaina, orphea etc. ), i would always pick "containment disk". its ( if u hit it), really a better cocoon with a super low cooldown. i like to use it: on their tank and then go on to kill their backline in teamfights, a target which is out of position and ur team needs time to setup for the kill or simply to escape.

i played her in the single lane brawl last week, using that "oneshot build" you talked about game lasted over 20 mins and with it being single lane i was constantly diving and pulling most of their team towards the end of the game my pulls were doing over 3k damage XD

Maiev is like Hanzo. Unless you are playing on a specific map with a coordinated pre-selected team comp you are not going anywhere. In Quickmatch Maiev is a joke. Either you a) can't hit enemy ranged heroes b) pull heroes with little value like Murky or c) pull heroes that you really don't want in the middle of your team like Johanna. Even if you do get a pull the friendly team often don't follow up or don't have the DPS or heroics to follow up. In addition heroes on the enemy team like Kel'Thuzad , Valeera and Kael'thas will eat you for breakfast. The problems with Maiev seems to stem from the fact that you need to cleave in a direction to get the pulls (instead of just a general three-hundred and sixty degrees), enemy heroes can see your teleportation points, Fan of Knives is a skill shot (instead of a directional spread), there is no level twenty talent power spike, there are a ridiculous amount of heroes that can escape Warden's Cage and the pull mechanic is a gimmick which once known enemy players easily counter by walking along.

Maiev is one of my favorite characters. But the hero in hots isn't what i would like. She depends too much on good teamates. I'm rather if she was more independent like samuro or greymane. I hope someday she gets a full rework.

if u are good with her u can draft her on any map in any situation ( unless ur team doesnt need a second damage dealer), so regarding teamcomp she is basically like genji in regards to the carry potential and thats why she is often banned in the first phase of gm hero league by a lot of pros

Love your videos, but this time, have to disagree. Maiev is the most overrated hero in the game. Her Q is a joke, compared to any other poke in the game. Players will not stand in a line getting hit by this spell, they will respond with their ones. Her W pull works well only when there's a set up of your teammates that are ready to kill, but in this case, a lot of other heroes can do the same job. The range of her E is just ok. You can initiate sometimes well with this spell, but speaking about escape - hell no. While this ghost flies, you can be killed in a second. Her ultimate abilities are ok, but not more than ok. Overall, Maiev is a squishy hero, that only pulls ppl a few meters. She does the job, that a lot of other heroes' single abilites can do. There's no reason to lock one dmg hero slot with Maiev, when you can pick something like Garrosh or Stiches (they are the tanks and they can pull ppl better), and then add a nice dmg hero with CC like Kel'Tuzad. There are a lot of good hero combinations that will make Maiev look like a minion, compared to the others. Almost everything you said in the video requires bad opponents, that will stand still through the fight. The opponents in the video have weak heroes setup against Muradin + Dehaka + Malf + Fenix. They won the game, not Maiev. Again, I love your videos, I just wanted to express my own thoughts about that. I think, that a lot of players overreact when they see quite complicated mechanics of a hero, thinking it's an OP hero, that just needs practice and skill to win games. But sometimes, they overthink themselves.

You forgot she has divine shield as her trait and you can pop it anywhere from 1-3 times in a fight. When you have a map where you MUST fight it close quarters even the best team has to group up at some point and that is exactly why she was on this map in particular. If this was say warhead junction where you are forced to spread and rotations are slow you'd be absolutely correct. On paper what you say makes some sense but in practice its very different. Watch some tournaments she is banned very frequently for good reason.

You used the "Divine Shield" term, but during divine shield you can attack and cast stuff, while Maiev's D spell is just a 1 second evasion ability, while that she can only move. And when you have a map with close quarters, this 1 second evasion will not save you. You will die almost instantly from AOE. All arguments I heard in the video and from you, basically describe a magicaly lucky situation. But sorry, even a catapult in some situations can kill a hero. In my opinion, as I've already said, what you're and other ppl are doing - is trying to defend a hero with weird mechanics, by turning it into something complicated and super skill-required, when in reality, Maiev is a minion, not a hero. Thank you for sharing thoughts anyway.

So what your saying is you draft better than all the professionals? If she was a bad as you say they wouldn't waste their ban on her. Case closed. Her damage potential is situational yes but if you have a map and team that is built around encountering this situation then she is the best pick for it. She is risky but the payoff is worth it. It's skill that makes her good that's why the pros ban her because someone with skill on this hero can get way too much value.
