Jyoti-di, This is an absolutely amazing presentation. You should receive a Pulitzer prize. I do not know any female American reporter who can do this. To paraphrase late Shahid Kadri, a poet in my mother language " Greetings to you dearest". Here in San Francisco and Silicon Valley Afghan communities, both Tajiks and Pakhtoons are very friendly to Indians. So are the Shiate Uzbeks and Hazaras. I visited an Afghan mosque in Fremont last Ramadan , and as a "Hindustani" was warmly welcomed. And women are so kind, polite, warm hearted and simple -- almost unbelievable. Glad to see Indian diplomatic presence back in Kabul. Pakistan may not survive as a nation state in the next 20 years, but Afghanistan will. Thank you Didi.

You put your finger on the problem dude. The country cannot be kept holding a begging bowl. The government should forcibly divert aid to open factories and commercial ventures that the country needs. India can help with know-how and tech and also trained manpower till that time the local talent comes online. Onus should be placed on nurturing local prowess and once they need to top up the labor pool, the women will be asked to step in. The Taliban is invested in the country and slowly will accommodate local needs including women, if there is a need and a crunch. This is the job of the international community. If we keep demonising them relentlessly they will lash out by doing things retrograde just to spite. Nuanced approach needed by everyone.
@hareshgaglani29552 жыл бұрын
Jyotiji, what you are doing requires tremendous courage and dedication. Keep it up! The first thing the Taliban Government should do is to respectfully facilitate the return of the Afghan Sikhs and Hindus who were forced to flee Afghanistan back to their homes and businesses there and ensure their complete safety. That gesture will pave the way for rebuilding of trust between India and Taliban.

Jyoti, one very important point. According to CIA's recent reports, during this war in the last twenty years, a total of 69000 drone sorties flew from Pakistan against Taliban in support of the US and its 25 allied countries. In addition, NATO continued its supply of weapons through Pakistan against the Taliban, for which Pakistan was sumptuously paid in billions. Many Taliban commanders were either killed or imprisoned by the Pakistan ISI on the behest of the US. Do you you think the Taliban have forgotten all this?! I don't think so! Of course, India would have been an enemy if such direct actions had been taken by the Indian government in support of the US invasion of this country. Believe me, these guys wouldn't have been so welcoming, the way you finding them now. Instead, the Indians stuck to their development projects in Afghanistan during the war years, improving various vitally important sectors in a manner not seen before. And this is something that cannot be overlooked or denied, even by the Taliban.

One video and people forget to analyse the ground reality. How many people who have commented here have read anything more than 10 pages on Afghanistan? Govt of India is doing it the correct way. Be cautious, have sources on the ground and in the Taliban to get a clearer picture. Don't become sentimental or emotional by just one video series. Remember, about 60 yrs back Afghanistan was an open society with all elements of modern culture. How many of us would like to keep our daughters uneducated? How many of us would support the ban on half of their population on jobs and place restriction. So taunting the embassy policy as timidness is completely wrong and also not a kind of free journalism. Our technical mission is enough for now. No need to upgrade it. Politically we should remain comitted to the old Afghan government. The common people of Afghanistan and, perhaps, the footsoldiers of the Taliban may not have any ill will towards India, but their leadership remains committed to Jihadism, as evident by the fact that Zawahiri was staying in the heart of Kabul until drone strike. Even if they are chafing with Pak and are clashing with ISKP (which is more like rivalry/competition for the slot of top Jihadist east of Iran) we have to remain wary about them. Our foreign policy should primarily focus on the people of Afghanistan that are trapped under the Taliban. Only humanitarian aid in the form of food and medicine. Any other economic support runs the risk of supporting the militant ambitions of the Taliban.

This Afghan Rogue State has nothing in common with India or even their own history and original culture. It is an imported barbarism and savagery of the worst kind. The Afghans for millenia were tribal republic that coexisted at the crossroads of civilizations. Today it is a barren wasteland - politically, economically, morally and culturally. If nations like India normalize this barbarism it will be a betrayal of not only ordinary Afghans but of India's own interests. Learned urdu/hindi from bollywood movies? And not the fact that like atleast half of them must have spent time in pakistan at one point in their lives. Urdu isn't simply a variation on hindi. It borrows a lot from the eastern regional language of subcontinent. For example persian is present in most languages east of the river indus. Including the languages spoken in afghanistan. We, in pakistan, understand hindi because we understand urdu and we can easily pick up on different words from bollywood content based on the context. Words that otherwise would have been alien to us. That is the same reason why afghans can pick up on hindi. Not because they were huge fans of bollywood and they learned hindi throughout. By that rationale people in pakistan would fluently speak arabic as reading and learning the quran is compulsory. But that is not the case...far more people here understand and speak english as opposed to arabic. Also taliban are a product of pakistani madrassas. I wouldn't be suprised if they spoke and understood punjabi.
