Almost 50 and voted in literally every election, local and federal, since I was 18. As a "leftist" only 3 candidates I've ever voted for in that time have won.

This whole discussion is a microcosm of the anarchist critique of state socialism (ie Marxism) and electoralism. The System (tm), whatever it is, will only ever reproduce things shaped like itself, lest it collapse pretty much instantly. Thus, politics must be prefigurative. Mutual aid, dual power structures, working class solidarity and unionization, and other sorts of direct action using a diversity of tactics, these are the key. Mind, I'll always support reformists and state socialists working within The System (tm) if the cost is low enough and their efforts will help get the state off our backs or at least will move the Overton window left, but here we see some prime examples of why with don't pin our hopes on any party.

@@Exodus26.13Pi That's highly reductive and misleading, just to start. I don't have the time to go over like a dozen branches of leftist philosophy and the more the a century of history behind them, but I can point you at Zoe Baker on KZbin, who has a doctorate in exactly this topic, if you're willing to learn more. To paint with an excessively broad brush, however, socialism is pretty much a big umbrella term for a whole bunch of ideas for how to handle politics, how to distribute resources, and how to abolish capitalism and put such a system in place. Within socialism there are smaller umbrella terms, for example Marxism and anarchism, which describe different philosophies of politics and how to overthrow capitalism (Marxism allowing revolution from within the government and allowing the continued existence of the state, and anarchism standing firmly on the prefigurative ground of direct action and total abolition of the state; there are other combinations of opinion), and collectivism and communism, which describe different ways of distributing resources (collectivism being public ownership of the means of production and individuals owning what they produce, and communism being public ownership of everything, because everyone contributes in some way to the production of everything, distributed according to need). Marxist socialist states like the Soviets consistently referred to themselves as socialist states moving toward communism. The appellation of communism to describe these states was American (and to a lesser extent British) propaganda. Trump is literally a textbook fascist, and his little trade war tariff stunt is the precise cause of the recession we're just now heading into. The day it was announced it was predicted that there would be a recession in 2 years, and the only reason it took 3 is the pandemic, and specifically, the socialist stimulus checks that kept the economy afloat in the interim. Also, he didn't keep a single one of his campaign promises and spent more time violating the constitution than upholding it.

@@watcher314159 Can't help but feel you are at risk of unintentionally misrepresenting Marxists to the novice reader here, amid some genuinely valid criticisms. Even Lenin said that the working class must break up, smash the "ready-made state machinery," and not confine itself merely to laying hold of it. He also opposed electoralism as a strategy for gaining power in and of itself: "If democracy, in essence, means the abolition of class domination, then why should not a socialist minister charm the whole bourgeois world by orations on class collaboration? Why should he not remain in the cabinet even after the shooting-down of workers by gendarmes has exposed, for the hundredth and thousandth time, the real nature of the democratic collaboration of classes?" The state is nothing more or less than the exercise of power (i.e. the use or threat of violence) by one class over another in a centralised fashion, obscured as it may be by a thousand laws of property and centres of political influence. There is a genuine debate to be had as to the Bolsheviks' success or failure in replacing the Russian Imperial state rather than simply taking it over during the civil war. Another important topic is the split between the Communists (anti-war, anti-electoral) and the remaining Social Democrats (pro-war, electoral), some of who still claimed to be Marxist. Dual power is an important concept to Marxists, and the distribution of power away from a corruptible vanguard party is especially important in MLM doctrine. With that said, I do think Anarchism has a lot to offer especially in its much more developed treatment of political consciousness and self leadership among ordinary people and it seems to hold a lot of promise for long term systemic change rooted in the consciousness and material life of the masses. It also seems resilient to the re-centralisation of power after the revolution through other forms of hierarchy - through which capitalism would eventually re-emerge as the remnants of the old regime reconstituted themselves.

Leaving a positive comment for the best Bother Man I think whats wild about Canada is how conservative it is and how that thwarts the NDP, but also the NDP sucks and isnt a socialist/progressive party.

As an Albertan I supported Rachel Notly for Premier. When she won she basically enacted the same centre and centre right policy that the Cons had. Lost her base's support and was out of government in the next election. 🤦🏾‍♂️

Yeah, get used to it. Same with Labour in UK. Economic lobbyists -- using large posts of oligarch funding and 'access' -- are pushing 'mainstream' left wing parties across G20 into being more like US Democratic Party -- to exclude any discussion of truly left-wing perspectives. That's aided the general drift to the fascist right in the last decade or so across wealthy (i.e. leading protectionist, consuming, & polluting) nations. I don't see Canada being as bad as UK though!!: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qYO7fqSEac53h80

Y'know what. This actually bothers me too. - When I was invovled with a green party. Some of the rest of the leadership was this kind of paranoid too. They were so excessively concerned and afraid of if someone either to far left. Or also too far right. Might be able to bring in a while bunch of new members and the existing order would be subverted. Seems extremely counter productive to me.
