The Kings have guys who have very narrow vision of how to build a team in the modern era. Granted Sacto and Phoenix will def look like clowns for the next decade passing on Doncic (hell the Mavs traded up and assets to get the chance to pick him) but it speaks in volumes when they don't believe that a big athletic wing with with loaded offensive skills as a scoring ball handler is premium value. Better than separating that into 3 different players who are limited in their own way with Fox, Bagley and Hield who the Kings now have as their future core and trying to surround them just so the Kings can sneak into the playoffs. And when one of those 3 guys gets injured and misses games, then it becomes a struggle for the team to be competitive.

De'Aaron Fox, DeMarcus Cousins, Isaiah Thomas, & Tyreke Evans were great picks. Tyreke didn't peak during his rookie year. That team is just a mess. He also played well for the most part on the Pelicans. Numbers aren't everything. He's a pretty dynamic player. McLemore & Thomas Robinson were drafted when they were widely projected, in fact I believe McLemore was projected to be off the board before the Kings even picked. Jimmer was scoring 30 plus in college (reminded me of Curry in college) and Frank Mason was a stud at Kansas as well as Hield at Oklahoma. And Bagley did ridiculous things at Duke that year (I think he's in a few record books at Duke) but you never know. The problem with Tyreke Evans was 1) injuries 2) he only got to play PG his Rookie season. Which is why he was successful. He was an early example or a larger PG who needed the ball to succeed and instead of playing to his strengths they tried to play him at SF/SG off the ball.

A lot of GMs and people making these draft picks for teams never played basketball at a high level (HS varsity or college) and that’s why most have know idea how to evaluate players coming out of college. Every true hooper that’s played under a few coaches growing up knows that rarely does the most skilled player on the team get the most usage in teenage/college basketball. Because the nasty truth is coaches always have favorites, and a lot of those coaches never played or have their own idea of what they think a good basketball player should be already pre conceived in their head before even evaluating the guys on their team. This leads to them building the offense around players they like, rather than the best players and trying to force players to player how the coach wants them to, which might not be to their strengths. So what am I saying? Stats are often completely skewed in HS/College basketball because of favoritism. You also have to attend a school to play for its team, so there’s a lot of college players on the floor who are only on the floor because they’re good enough to play and had the grades to do so. So there might be a great player on a bad team with a coach who doesn’t like them, or has slipping grades that hardly ever gets opportunities and then you have medicore players like Jimmer Fredette that are favored by their coach and their schools program, and they basically fed the guy open looks by setting plays just for him and when he had to adapt to the NBA level, he was exposed by the better talent pool. People think colleges just go around hosting scrimmages all around America at every gym in every town and collect the best 19-25 year old basketball players in America. No they just take whoever signs up and pick who they think is the best of the bunch. I believe there’s thousands of players who never who got drafted because they didn’t play for a fancy college and were better than 90% of the kids coming of colleges, and most probably gave up on basketball after HS because there little to no adult leagues in America. I was a HS football star myself who just never played football again because I didn’t go to college. So my “spot” was given to the next best WR that did, and that’s why college talent is so deceiving. They’re just the guys who got the spot, not the best 19-23 year olds at that sport in their age pool, there’s so much red tape for athletes to get to that college level, that people are getting their not because they’re the most talented but because the people more talented often don’t make it to that college level because it’s about education before sports

As a Kings fan I 100% agree. The only two good draft choices we made were Fox and Boogie, Marvin is looking like a bust because Walton refuses to give him playing time. Once he gets playing time, then I'll decide if he is a bust or not.

I'd argue that the NBA draft will always be an unpredictable mixed bag and hindsight is 20/20. Scouting and pre draft workouts can give you some idea who to pick but it will always be factors like the system in place, minutes available, injuries, and player development program that will very much dictate a rookie's success in the league. I believe the 1st and last factor are the King's true problems when it comes to rookies. Their draft selection is just the tip of the iceberg.

I think what we’re looking at is not necessarily the bad draft picks that the kings made (yes we have made bad picks) but ultimately it may just be the player development and culture that the kings have. As a kings fan, we have not been a winning caliber team for years and quite frankly our player development is piss poor, which is why you see guys not ever developing pass their rookie seasons (Tyreke). That’s why you see other teams like the suns or knicks, the teams that are always at the lottery. Not necessarily because of bad picks all the time but rather also because they lack the community and skills to develop players. Honestly it’s been a train wreck watching the Kings draft for years, I just hope we made the right choice with Fox and Bagley.

It's crazy to me that the Kings had a large, slashing point guard known for his woes off the ball in Tyreke Evans and a small shooting guard that was known for being an incredible shooter that had a hard time creating his own shot in Jimmer Freddette, then tried to make Jimmer into the point guard and left Tyreke to ruin the spacing adjusting to his new role on the wing
