1. Tom knows the mushroom planet because Sonic got a ring-portal guide with his bag of rings from Longclaw, and we see this when Sonic first narrates his escape plan to the mushroom world. 2. There was a deleted scene where Longclaw DOES flee with Sonic to Earth; it continues with her dying of old age before telling Sonic how to use the rings, and I think it works better than what the filmmakers ended up using in the theatrical cut, especially since we are given no real reason as to why Sonic is not bothered by Longclaw's "sacrifice" (movie's gotta movie?).

In a deleted scene for the movie shows that when they get attacked by the echidna tribe, both Longclaw and Sonic escape to Earth but after getting to Earth, Longclaw becomes sick and eventually dies. 3:08 The rings don’t close right away. They stay open for a few seconds. Longclaw didn’t want the Echidnas going through as well. Even if she tried to guard it from inside the ring, it’d be more risky. As for Tom knowing about the Mushroom Planet. I don’t think you need to know what the location specifically looks like. Tom probably thought to himself: “That Mushroom Land that Sonic was talking about” …and threw the ring. Perhaps they’ll expand a bit on that in the sequel, but I don’t think you’d need to have a specific visual. Sonic also did slightly describe it to him in the motel anyway.

This only occurred to me recently, but the reason why Sonic was sent to Green Hills, Montana from that portal ring was because he is from Green Hill island. Like what was mentioned at 8:45, the holder of the ring must first think of a location to make a portal too. Since Longclaw lives on Green Hill island, her first instinct was probably some place that is most similar to the island in order for Sonic to feel at home, almost like a “Green Hill” alternative, but she knew the location had to be on Earth, hence why he was located to Green Hills, Montana. Also, I would like to believe that Tom was able to figure out how the ring worked because of how Sonic described the mushroom planet in the motel scene. What Sonic described was pure misery, at least from his opinion, and also sounded like he could never return back to Earth. Therefore, when Tom had to think about where Robotnik should be sent to, the most miserable place is Sonic’s mind makes a good contender, and also doubles as a place where he supposedly cannot return from.

I will never forget watching this film the first time and being SHOCKED by how much I enjoyed it. What really worked was they did not make the assumption that viewers would just know who everyone is like in a lot of film adaptations of video games. Instead, they built the universe from the ground up, taking it slow with introducing more characters. As well, the two main characters from the games that were introduced were strong introductions. Sonic felt just like his original counterpart with spices of his own and a new story to make him complex. His relationship with Tom was rather cool to watch it develop. Jim Carrey in particular was the best part of the film. I recall worrying that he might be too comedic with Jim Carrey playing the role, but it was well balanced. The essentails of Robotnik were maintained and they let Jim Carrey be himself and deliver his lines how he wanted to, the result was to me one of his best roles. It is also a lovely touch seeing how he slowly turns into the classic Robotnik appearance, including getting closer with his voice, at times even sounding close to Mike Pollock’s Robotnik. What little lore was brought in the film felt natural and set up just enough to allow a sequel to bring in much more lore. The final battle was epic as hell and the ending teases of Robotnik returning (and starting to turn into classic Robotnik) along with Tails’ debut got me hyped and ready for a second film. I was grinning from ear to ear when it was over and to see a film adaptation of a video game break the curse was great. This was a great start to a film series, and the first sequel… just wow was that one fun as well.

Longclaw didn't go because she wanted to hold off the Echidnas so Sonic had a chance. Fun fact: In the original version of this film, events transpired differently. First of all, Sonic was a toddler when Longclaw was forced to flee the island on Sonic's homeworld. Longclaw did go with Sonic and raised him from toddler to teenager in a pretty hilarious and heartwarming montage. She then dies of old age with Sonic by her side and he's alone from that point onward. Here's a link for those interested in said deleted scene. HOWEVER WARNING: Scene contains terrible OG movie Sonic design, unfinished animation and some tears. Enjoy. kzbin.info/www/bejne/pp-oo2CGjcuIhsU

In defense to Tom opening the portal to the mushroom planet not knowing what it looked like, how did Sonic know what the mushroom planet looked like before throwing the first ring there? It could have been a case where you throw the ring thinking of either place's name or how it looked. Tom was probably thinking "Mushroom Planet" and not the terrain of it. Btw, this was a great video. It definitely hooked me to the Sonic franchise.

Even by its decency, this movie really excelled in doing what's best within its circumstances, and actually even beyond that considering they were willing to redesign Sonic and delay its release date. Moving forward, the 1st film will be remembered by its fundamental, yet humble start. A good way to kickstart a movie series where we'll get to see more epic stuff in the near future!

What I adore about this interpretation of Sonic's character is that it, in my opinion, shows what would've been of Sonic if he hadn't had the need to save the world ever since he was really young. The Classic games kind of show us an 8-10 y.o. Sonic who seems to have been aware since the beginning of who Eggman was and what he did; and used his powers for the greater good. I think that's also why most of the series and the Archie comics based their story on a Sonic who had seen the effects of Eggman's plans, and so made the decision that if no one else could defeat him, he would try and succeed. This, on the other hand, is a Sonic whose only interaction with real danger while growing up was with the Echidna tribe, where he still didn't know how to use the gifts nature had given him to try and help Longclaw along or defend himself, only to be protected. That little Sonic must've been around 3, and giving that he has around 10 to 12 years in the movie, that means he would've spent around 7 to 9 years of his life not really having to face any danger, besides hiding himself from the world, which held not as big of a threat as a bunch of Echidnas hunting you down (obviously until Robotnik showed up). He never developed the maturity and control over his emotions as game Sonic, he never formed connections with the people he wanted to protect like game Sonic (until the end of the movie), and he never had other purpose other than having fun and keep himself safe. This is what Sonic would kinda be if he never had to go through the events of his main classic games, and had a caretaker to look out for him (things that Archie and SatAM tried to do with Uncle Chuck).

didn't sonic mention the mushroom planet previously? maybe you don't have to see a location, but just have a general idea of what a location looks like. Knuckles finds robotnik in the second movie (probably by detecting Sonic's quill, maybe getting an anchor to the supposed chaos emerald energy), then Robotnik uses a ring to get from the mushroom planet to earth?

to point it out, in the Motel, Sonic talked about how, when he gets his rings back, he would have to leave and go to a mushroom planet, Tom even making a little joke about how sonic won''t be the only "FUNGuy" a play on word for Fungus, and we saw two times sonic can look at a picture and imagen the location to use the ring, one with the shirt of San Francisco and another during the chase where he runs past a bus with the Paris Eiffel Tower painted on it, so i think if you have the general idea of the place you are thinking of, like the land mark and know where on the PLANET or thats not on the planet, the ring can make a portal to that location, and since Tom thought of a Planet thats nothing but mushrooms, its almost a no brainier the ring will make a portal to the Mushroom planet sonic was talking about

I'd just like to mention the fact that robotnik and sonic during the final chase were in super speed mode and the world around them looked like as if it was frozen, so yes. Nobody saw them. Things just started exploding out of nowhere from their point of view. The only exception to this being when they went through Paris which was just a minor plot hole, but everything else in San Francisco was frozen when Sonic and Robotnik were fighting. Also, Tom didn't need to know what the mushroom planet looked like to open a portal to it, he just thought of a place far, far away from where robotnik was, presumably like how longclaw did as she mentioned that earth was on the other side of the universe. You don't need an exact picture of where you're going, just the general idea. I'd also just like to mention that the movie takes place in generic earth places for either of two reasons: 1, because the focus is on a simple origin story for sonic on earth and doesn't need to take the characters anywhere else, or 2, the producers probably had a rather limited budget and that green hill scene was all they could really offer. Also, the floss isn't a fortnite dance nor is it a joke in the movie or referencing fortnite, it's just gen z sonic being gen z sonic, there's not much to it. I'm not trying to talk a bunch of trash about the video btw, it's still a great video. Just commenting on some things I feel I needed to. (I doubt you'll read this because I am somehow ALWAYS late to comment sections, but I just had to mention this)
@EEE.6542 жыл бұрын
I have a reason for how Tom opened the portal to the Mushroom planet, and it's that, instead of knowing what it looks like, you need to think of the place you want to go and then throw the ring. Either that, or just say it out loud. This explains how Sonic opened the portal despite not knowing what San Francisco looks like, only seeing it from Tom's shirt, although he probably could've seen it in a movie so my headcanon is debunked. But a headcanon isn't meant to be canon, so it's fine

Now, see... I'm not a Sonic fan. Never really have been. I only know of the characters, but I've never actually played any of the games. So this Sonic is the Sonic that PROPERLY introduced me to... Sonic. If people were to ask me which Sonic I grew up with, I would have to say this movie before getting many weird looks from people. But I respect and love this movie purely because it did something I didn't think it could do. A video game movie got me hooked. I enjoyed the movie, I enjoyed the characters and everything. Furthermore, it got me to see the second movie which made me love it even more! Of course, I know that these interpretations of Sonic, Robotnik, they're not too much like their video game origins. As far as I know, Tails and Knuckles are the only ones that are closest to their video game counterparts. But I think that's okay. Sometimes, to introduce casual viewers like myself into Sonic, you have to give them something that isn't fully Sonic. I think this movie took a bold step and I think it paid off. Especially with the commitment they put into the film (looking at you, freaky Sonic). This studio took a large leap of faith with both viewers, fans AND money and made something that viewers like myself and Sonic fans as a whole can enjoy. Is it a perfect movie? No. Of course it isn't. Look at it. But is it enjoyable? Does it do its job? Does its upsides make the downsides look like nothing? Is this movie FUN? Yes. Yes it is. And now I have a respect for Sonic as a whole.

One of the things i like about the characters of Sonic and Robotnik is they are a mirror parallel of each other due to their lonely and isolation from their unique gifts. Sonic's speed caused him to be on the run and be alone, whilst Robotnik's gift of high intelligence caused him to be lonely from a child to adult and see everyone as his inferior. Both Sonic and Robotnik are orphans which is another great parallel. The difference is that Sonic craves friends and doesn't see himself as above people to cope. Robotnik on the other hand has become cruel and developed a major superiority complex. I think this mirroring of each other was a great subtle way to connect these two.

I wonder why people don't believe when he says he doesn't know the way to San Francisco? Sonic lived in a cave, playing ping-pong, reading comics, watching people, but not interacting with them, watching the shows they watch. I doubt he actually studied map reading or how to navigate an interstate highway.

I never had any worry about Jim Carrey as Robotnik, because Jim Carrey is at his best when he's playing very eccentric characters; and there are few characters that are as eccentric as Robotnik/Eggman. As for Sonic's personality; to me it makes sense that he didn't start out being the character we see in the games. That's him after years of fighting Robotnik, of being the hero. Like you see this with Superhero movies as well, least the sequels where once their character is established and they have finished their hero's journey they becomes somewhat static characters themselves. To me, the Movies are building up to a more game-like super confident and heroic Sonic. I'm also fine with the movie mostly sticking to Earth and 'grounded' Locations; its a fairly standard storytelling trope, sticking to locales the audience is familiar with while getting them used to the ideas and concepts of the characters. Like Doctor Who does this on occasion, where a 'soft reboot' of sorts comes with the Doctors and his companions spending most their time on or around Earth for several episodes and in a few cases an entire season. You basically, kinda literally, ground them in reality and buils on their fantastical elements before diving into the deep end of whats possible with the character.

A headcanon for the dances is this: Sonic being alone has never really gotten a chance to celebrate anything. With him taking out Eggman's tank, and possibly watching a kid play Fortnite through the window, he probably saw the dance and thought it was pretty good. So a victory over Eggman was a good enough celebration to do the dance.

I don’t think a lot of people talk about this but I really like when there a connection with the hero and villain. Both sonic and eggman didn’t really have a family. Sonic lost his only family at the time and eggman probably didn’t even know his. But the difference is their response to this issue. Sonic wants more friends and eggman just gives up on humanity , respecting robots more. It’s almost possible to imagine if they switched sides and for once would make some sort of sense since their reasons is almost similar. Two characters with similar issues and what they do about it differently. Really loved this movie and the next one.

My biggest issue with the film is how it sorta lacks that "Shonen edge and feel" that the 2000s games and late Archie had that really brought out that adrenaline factor that keeps a lot of people invested because the franchise was that badass, I get it's the first film but without that element, it doesn't really feel like Sonic but the second movie seems to be adding more of that so I can't wait to see the early screening on Wednesday. And while I'm here, I also am not a fan of the soundtrack, it feels more like generic action movie music than a Sonic movie soundtrack. I don't expect hard ass guitars and drums the whole time but I want to hear orchestrated high octane music with environmental and rock undertones fused in similarly to how the Black Panther soundtrack had orchestrated Marvel music with African and Trap undertones in its music. An example of what I mean would be Sonic 06 or Unleashed.
