Indeed, and he deserves a lot more praise than he is getting here. Yes, the US was unhappy about the way the Suez Crisis was going, and yes, they did thoroughly backstab their European allies, but the idea to resolve the crisis the way it was eventually resolved was Pearson's own idea, not something the US thought up and simply used him as a conduit for.

Fun Fact: The Canadian guy’s name was Lester B. Pearson. He won a Nobel Peace Prize for his role in resolving the crisis in 1957 and was the Prime Minister of Canada from 1963-1968. He was also the person who introduced the Canadian flag as we know it today, and rolled out universal healthcare nationwide, among other things. Put some god damn respect on the man’s name.
@JoeXOTic

another fun fact: Lester B. Pearson initiated the process of redesigning the Canadian flag in 1964 after the misconception by Egyptian officials that the Canadian flag at the time was identical to the British one during peace talks in Egypt. On February 15th, 1965, the iconic red and white Maple Leaf design was adopted as the official flag of Canada.

I have never heard such a brief explanation of Lester B. Pearsons Legacy: "The US sent in some Canadian guy." Nah bro, that's when the UN peacekeeping force was conceived as an idea in the first place. From a great Canadian prime minister, Lester B. Pearson. Way to just kinda brush over that and not cover that fact that changed how the UN worked forever.

@MrDragon1968
@MrDragon1968 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, there's quite a lot he's brushed over or simplified. The British/French/Israeli invasion was wrong (it also bought down the British Prime minister- Anthony Eden), however the canal was built and mostly owned by a French company in a joint agreement with Egypt who also had shares (Egypt later sold it's shares to Britain and it became French/British owned) and was leased until 1968. Nasser force nationalised it (breaking agreed treaties Egypt had made), taking everyone by surprise, and then blocked Israel's access to it. He did it in part for geopolitical reasons - he was playing the west against the Soviets. Initially a lot of people were against Nasser's actions but when Britain/France/Israel secretly sent in invasion forces attitudes changed toward those countries positions. It should have been resolved diplomatically (as other countries were attempting to do), but neither side comes out of it well. Another important aspect to this - which I'm surprised wasn't mentioned - is that while Britain was slowly starting to de-colonise post WW2, the Suez crises really marked the end of Britain as a major global power.

The last line you put is the first thing that came to my mind when I heard about the canal and its value.
