Highly unlikely. What was not mentioned in this video is that these solar storms are quite usual on a low scale, only to spike every 11-12 years, when the Sun shifts it's magnetic poles. Thus, the next spike of solar storms will happen sometime in 2023, while the following one should come in 2034 or 2035. Unless the Sun somehow inexplicably shortens it's magnetic cycle, 2031 should be pretty safe.

The issue isn't from the power, it's that anything metal is basically an antenna. So your own device becomes energized and the circuits in it are fried. Even a CD might get toasted if there was enough energy in the CME that hits earth. Think like what happens when you put metal in a microwave. It's probably just a joke, but for anyone who thinks it would legitimately save you, it wont. :P

@@sjonnieplayfull5859 I might be rough here, but depends on a few factors, namely the magnetic field strength vs how insulating the material is. A magnetic field wants to move all electrons it affects, and electrons may or may not move depending on how resistant or conductive the medium is ( metal, plastic, air, etc.) and if they have a place to move. A powerful enough magnetic field can turn things into circuits which we normally wouldn't think could be or cause a current flow greater than the materials tolerance, and as such, the extent of a flow of electrons through the material can damage the material.

If your interested in how this affects electricity, the mass ejection actually produces a large voltage difference in the atmosphere over long distances, which basically overrides transmission lines and gives them surges. Depending on what equipment is hooked up to the transmission lines, the surge may destroy them. Most houses have surge protectors somewhere between transmission lines and their house so your computer shouldn't be affected, however power plants would be in serious damage. My dad works at an energy company and knows a guy who's current project is actually to research into how mass ejections would affect it and if we could even prepare for it.

I've done a little research on this before the video came out and I found that the hardest hit would be Transformers, particularly old ones. We have the technology to upgrade them to be more resilient to solar storms, but the upgrades would be too costly for companies and so they don't bother. Also although not immune, your computer is less likely to get destroyed thanks to its metal casing acting a little like a Faraday cage, and the circuit breakers to your house stopping power surges.

Because of the fact that these are rare, and we only had one recorded to hit Earth quite recently, I believe that by the time it happens again we will have some way of lowering the damages or stopping it altogether
