ETA vs Miyota! Who will win the battle of the movements?
On one side, the Swiss workhorse, nearly 50 years old, a staple of the industry. . . and on the other side, a Japanese newcomer, less than 20 years in the field, but with very impressive specs.
Which do you choose?

*** I learned something new reading the comments! I was not aware that Rolex/Zenith decreased the beat rate of the El Primero prior to it's use in the older Daytonas. Wonderful community, thanks for letting me know!
@gfxdaddy
@gfxdaddy 2 ай бұрын
Rolex did more than just decrease the beat rate (a downgrade, but done to improve its reliability), they made more than 200 patented changes/improvements to the El Primero, including completely chucking and replacing about 50% of the parts with their own to the point it was pretty much a different movement in comparison by the time they were done with it, and christened it the 4030. Contrary to popular opinion, the Daytona wasn’t powered by an El Primero 400, the 4030 was a different movement, built on an El Primero base.

Yup. I encountered the helicoptering as well with a Hamilton Khaki automatic, which has the Powermatic movement, which is a reduced beat ETA 2824 (to lengthen the power reserve). The watchmaker who fixed said this was quite common and that one should avoid winding the 2824 more than 5-10 times. Just wind it to get it started.

I have only 1 watch with an ETA 2824 and have had no issues. I have 2 watches sitting in my watch box not running because of the SW200-1 horrible ratchet wheel. I'm not hard on my watches, nor have I ever been an overwinder but within 1 1/2yrs both watches ratchet wheel's teeth broke off. Never had any issues with the 5 watches I have with the Miyota 9015/9039. I have one watch with the Ronda R150 & love that one. No issues at all, so far. I actually purchased 2 ratchet wheel's to repair my watches, but thus far, I have been too scared to do it, since I only found 1 video on the topic 😂. Great topic, as always Marc.

All my ETA 2824 movements have had winding problems they get tight and the stem will bend or even brake if you persist in trying to hand wind them, luckily the problems usually occur in the first 18 months and can be repaired under warranty. Never had an issue with the elaboret movements but for longevity with no servicing just get a Seiko.

*Excellent* video (yet again), Marc, and fills me in on more than a few things I hadn't known before. My feelings toward ETA soured more than a little some years back when I had not one, but *two* Hamilton Khaki Field Mechanicals pack in on me in the course of a year. In both cases, the manual-wind bits were to blame. (No, I didn't manhandle either watch when winding them.) And, even though Seiko wasn't the focus here, I'm curious about one thing: some folks rag on the 6R series of movements on account of their "only" offering a beat rate of 21,600vph, but next to no one mentions the 6R2x movements, which spec at 28,800vph. My SARW25 (one of the Laurel tribute models) sports the 6R27, which besides sporting both power-reserve and datewheel subdials offers rock-steady timekeeping. Assuming you haven't already done so, maybe a video covering Seiko's mid-to-upper-level movements can be put in the hopper?

Tmi makes them 3rd party but they are as expensive as swiss ... The insides are very similar to the Miyota 9000 Not sure if the 3rd party's are made in Japan or not but hard to find anyone selling them. When I buy a watch I like to know I can get spares easy (so I will only buy orient F6 day or day date) or they can be serviced easily like with ETA / Stellita.

The Miyota really shines with a display case back. Thanks to that one way winding you can get the weight spinning freely and just like a fan blade it disappears so you can see the movement. Plus getting it spinning turns it into a fun fidget toy. ; )

Hi Mark. Been a fan of yours and long Island Watch now for quite some years. Bought tools, straps and other supplies from you through the years. Here is my observation on Miyota movements vs ETA/Sellita and Seiko 4R36/NH36. I have several Vaer D5 divers of varying styles. An early Miyota 9039 powered Arctic which I have had the longest and a Miyota 9039 powered Pacific. I have a second early Arctic that has an ETA 2824 that is as yet unworn. I was still working driving truck daily when I bought the first Miyota powered diver. It reminds me of my first diver, a Mondaine with radium for lume I got when I was 13 in 1969. The Vaer kept good time maybe losing 4 seconds a week for 3-4 years. I was quite active physically. Then a year and a half ago Yellow freight went BK and put us out of work. So while I don't consider myself retired after 47 years driving line, I'm not back to working. Some weeks are quite sedentary. The unidirectional winding of the Miyota can't keep up and I notice the watch running fast. Like 3-5 minutes gain in a week or 10 days. I have had a Weishi timegrapher for quite a few years now and use it to correct beat error and regulate my watches as a hobby whenever they don't run to my satisfaction. I am what watch makers call a seconds chaser. I use an atomic clock to set and keep track of my watches running habits. So one day I notice this Miyota 9039 had gained a bunch in just a week so I pop it on the timegrapher and it looks like snow. All over the place. So I give it a good full wind, back on the timegrapher and it's back to running like a "swiss watch". So now on a slow week I hand wind The Miyota every 4-5 days If I feel like. Another thing I have noticed about the different movements is how hard or easy they are to adjust or correct beat error at least for me. The Seiko's seem to be fairly easy to get a 0.0 or 0.1 beat error. I am always amazed how easy it is to get them running flat lines across the timegrapher screen. They just don't stay there very long with daily use. They are fairly easy to adjust + or - a second or two to get that slight gain rather than losing time. The Miyota's are a pain. I can get them 0.0 some of the time but more likely 0.1 or 0.2. and when it comes to gaining or losing time they are touchy. If i can get them -4 seconds a day I'm happy. If I try to swing it to gain it jumps to +9 or 12 seconds a day. They are just touchy. Of course the ETA or Sellita movements I have worked on regulate easy and probably didn't even need beat error correction. I switched back to my original 773 turtle for 6 months or so since being on extended vacation. The magic lever Seiko uses catches any movement to wind and I never noticed the Seiko gaining or losing much even when I was really lazy. It will run noticeably worse on the timegrapher when i have not been very active but does not gain or lose like the Miyota. I have not worn the ETA powered Vaer so I don't know how the dual reverser wheels keep up yet. That one was bought with full retirement in mind. The Miyota winds smoother than the ETA. I Bought a later production Sellita powered Vaer D5 Arctic as a gift for a friend that wanted me to sell him my Miyota powered D5 Arctic and he loves it. He says it keeps good time. He is very active though. My oldest son is a trucker. Local pick up and delivery so he is very active. He has had more trouble with Swiss stuff and the Orient diver I gave him for his wedding than with his Seiko's. His Tissot PRS 516 died so I had a local watchmaker here in Reno go through it. When my son got it back it died again in short order. I gave him a Glycine combat that Costco was closing out on so I bought two. His stem pulled out one day. I guess it is still running. My buddy bought the same Glycine and it died and is currently in Sandy Utah for repair. Both my son and buddy bought the Seiko 5 sports that Costco sells and they have had no problems yet. I really like the thin, high beat Miyota movements and so far have not had any mechanical reliability problems. I just sometimes don't move enough to keep them wound sufficiently. And No, It's not time for me to go back to my Seiko quartz 5H26-7A09. Quartz while accurate have no soul. Automatics on the other hand need tending. They have more vices yes. But they are more rewarding when they do run well.

I really enjoy the Miyota movements I have, even if it is the old cheaper version. I got a Miyota in my Citrizen promaster dive watch and I cannot hear the spinning whatsoever, in my Laco Aachen with the same movement, I definetly hear it, especially if I am inside and it's silent. I don't really dislike it, but I would if it was a dressier watch and not a very toolish one. Accuracy-wise, my Miyota movements beat out my Tissot powermatic 80 and Seiko 4R36. The only mechanical watch I have that beats out my Miyota movements is my Seiko 7S26C that I regulated myself to +2.8s/day on average and my highbeat seagull ST2130 that is silly accurate, running within COSC in 4 positions when messured... Cool video Mark, keep it up! :-)

Thank you for the video. I picked up a green Port Jeff back in Sept. I have always wanted a traveler GMT. With the special on green Port Jeff, even though green is not my color, I just can't pass the deal. I started to alternate it with my Orient Neptune initially, by mid Oct, I started wearing it continuously as my everyday watch. So far, from 10/17 to today (11/25). Accumulative average accuracy for the past 38.7 day is +1.14 second/day (e.g. in 38.7 day, it resulted in +44 sec, 44/38.7 = 1.14). On a day-to-day basis, it varies from -1.66 to +3.63 s/d. What an amazing watch and movement! I am wearing this green Port Jeff on my left and my Garmin Instinct on my right. If I have a third arm, I would get an RM II GMT ;-)

I believe the issue with the ETA 2824 keyless works is the winding pinion (part no. 410). I have a chronometer grade ETA 2824 in a Longiness and a tooth on the winding pinion broke off. I could still hand wind it but I would hear a click every time the broken tooth came around. And of course the broken tooth was somewhere inside the movement so I got it serviced and the part replaced.

While I got the watch on the cheap, it's really a jarring problem to feel for yourself, I'll do my best to steer clear from any ETA movements after that one, since I don't have access to competent watch repairers. Nice video, well done, thanks for making it! Regrettably I have never owned anything with a Miyota. But here's my two cents: - I've had some so-so experience with the Soprod Newton, which had dodgy crown action and time setting movement of the hands when it came out, but runs well even if the crown is dodgy - Longstanding history with Seiko's 7s26, 4r35, 6r15, 6r3x and 6L movements. The 6R3x has been plagued by low amplitude, even for a Seiko, and I've needed to replace two. The 6L35 premium movements, however, are the dog's bollocks. Supreme winding feel, well regulated out of the box, and very nice crown action. 6R15, 4R35, 7S26... All ran fine, did what they had to, even if a bit thick - Powermatic 80: Never had problems with 'm, even though I don't have any feelings towards the movements. - ETA 2824 / Sellita SW200: Have not had any issues with these either, seem to work like a charm. Winding feel on the crown is not refined, but it does what it needs to. - DUW 3001: Nomos movement has been running fine for me, albeit reliably slow, so I guess mine wasn't regulated well out of the box. That said, very weird movement, where the rotor spins if you wind it, and winding feels grainy. I can't say I'm overwhelmed by it, but I do love my ahoi - Grand Seiko 9S64 and 9R65 are very, very nice movements. Superlative feel at the crown, and boy is a Spring Drive 9R65 an amazing accumulator of power. You can almost see the power reserve max out as you sit at your desk with one. Amazing movements. - Soprod C125 GMT has been spongy at the crown again. It's a Soprod thing, I guess. Ran fine, but the crown feel on Soprods is not inspiring. - Sellita Chonographs, SW500 series: Nice. Workhorse-like chronograph movements, both the regular and flyback iteration. Nothing to complain about. - Unitas 6498 are fantastic big honking pocket watch movements, but with a delightful feel at the crown. Nothing against them. - Peseux 7001 are fine as well, feel good at the crown and run well, but I'm annoyed by the placement of the small seconds hand. - ETA 2801 is a better hand crank than the Peseux, in my opinion. Runs nicer, winds nicer, even though it's thicker. I've owned some more, and currently own a Cartier and a Longines three hander as well. The only true dumpster fire of a movement has been whatever is inside an Amphibia. That was just nasty all round. It wasn't accurate, or nice to handle, or quiet. In fact, I won't touch an Amphibia ever again, if I can help it. Brrrrrr.

Right now is a great time to be an enthusiast. I have some great modern Omegas and other Swiss watches, but I'm being pulled further and further into the microbrand space because of Miyota. How could I not; microbrand attention to detail, small business mindset that listens to customer input rather than having to abide to mass appeal, and accurate well made movements coming out of Japan that rival Swiss movements. I'm here for the shakeup and look forward to more Henry Archers, Traskas, etc. to come out in the future.

Absolutely, at these price points (let's say 400 - 800$), I think a lot more people are buying watches that speak to them rather than being a statement piece or an investment, thus making 'Swiss Made' less of a factor. Sure with sites like Chrono24 or eBay with its seller/buyer protection it has become easier, safer and more effective to less lower priced watches, I don't think the investment is even on the mind of mo.st

Currently wearing a Zodiac SST 36,000. Runs great. Very accurate. Only downside is that they put the mainspring in a sealed barrel. That means when I serviced it, I was unable to replace the mainspring. Still works great, but with a weak mainspring, it has low amplitude and has to be wound more often. Not really a big deal and for a watch that is about 50 years old, I'm not complaining.

I can give some first hand experience regarding stripped teeth from the ratchet wheel from a SW200. A friend of mine came to me with a problematic Oris. I could see the damage through the back case glass. Simple enough to repair in the end but it does happen. Edit: Just to add - thanks for the nice comparison video!

It happens especially on older Stellitas but it can happen on any 2824 type as it was a handwinder with autoworks put on after.

One slight knock on the miyotas, though I do love them, is that they are produced in such quantities that sometimes watchmakers end up with a movement that is significantly older than the watch it is going into, and when that happens sometimes the lubricant in the movement will have dried, and can really kill the power reserves, down to about 12 hours in bad cases. Easy enough to service, but still.

Good video on a more interesting topic, for me, than the large battle between watch designs. For actuality, I would make a video about ETA/Sellita vs LJP, same price range. Cheers.

I have a watch with a Miyota 9130 movement in it. It has a power reserve complication at the 1 position on the dial. It has been a great movement in truth. Its accuracy is superb when fully wound, with deviation between 0-2s per day. This falls away when the watch is at half wind, typically gaining between 12-15s, which is well within the published tolerances. It also is meant to have a power reserve of 40hrs, mine gets closer to 50 before it runs completely out of steam.

Thanks for pointing out the ratch issue with eta. There is a 2 to 1 issue so big teeth to little teeth. Very very easy to fix, but this is the reason it winds so tightly.

I love that Wise finally using ETA, they used NH for quite a time, still as my Thai salary goes, to buy a Thai watch is too expensive for me and I get Avi-8 instead (and even buying Islander plus tax and shipping cost, is still cheaper than Thai watch seriously)

@@ahha6304 Very sad to hear that :-< I am getting close to purchasing a Wise Flyboy (just have to sell my daughter to an Arabian Sheik first!) There is an option of Thai numerals or Arabics for the dial. Going for the Thai of course. French may be the most beautiful sounding language but Thai is definatly the most beautiful written language. Best wishes from New Zealand.

My Phoibos Eagle Ray Bronze watch has the Sellita 200-1 and it has the helicopter issue when it is hand wound. I had no idea what was going on with it until I read about this problem online. The simple solution for me was just to do the Seiko shuffle to get it going. No more ha d winding and no more problem.

I haven't seen a better channel on watches. This is the Top Dog Watch Guy that we have access to. Regarding thickness, ...as an engineer (like Marc) I see pushing "thin" as a high cost adventure. I have a Waltam that died because the gears started jumping teeth. Hell to fix. The thinner the gear teeth ...the more the risk. Same goes for tight stacking of large diameter gears. Want thin? No Date is the BestWay to get there, I suspect. (The movement has to be a dedicated no date)

Ive had 4 watches with a mix of 90s5 / 9039 / 9029. And 1 with an elaboré grade sellita sw200-1. The miyotas are plainer, thinner, cheaper 1/2 or 2/3rds the price, have a lower failure rate, and have a 42 hour power reserve. They are unidirectional so they wind one direction and can spin freely the other way. They have been widely used in microbrands due to the attractive compromises it offers. The sw200-1 is more premium in terms of accuracy as it is generally regulated better and decoration, oft featuring geneva stripes, blued screws, or a custom rotor depending on the brand. Both are 28,800 but the sw200-1 have a slightly lower 38 hour power reserve. The achilles heel is hand winding takes more of a toll on a couple of the gears in the sellita sw200-1. The swiss standard has bidirectional winding, which is nice. Eta will only sell to internal swatch group brands. The eta 2824-2 has been phased out in favor of the new 80 hour, 21,600 movements seen in certina, hamilton, mido, rado, tissot etc. As i understand it, It is less consumer friendly requiring brand support to regulate or service due to it's more modular construction. I like the older eta 2824-2 / sellita sw200-1 more than the new movements. The miyotas i have all run a bit fast. Maybe +10 seconds a day? The sellita i have generally runs -5 seconds a day. I like both and both have their strengths. The miyotas allow microbrands to make high quality and reliable 500-700 dollar watches. The sw200-1 allows brands to move up market in the 900-2k range with your sinn, doxa, squale, marathon type of brands.

I have watches with most major brand movements in them and have really come to love Miyota. My ETA and Sellita movements have been reliable, so no complaints there. Miyota has been equally reliable. I've had some problem with Seiko factory movements, notably the 6R15 in my Sarb017 that I need to replace, and a 4R35 in my Samurai that I replaced with an NH-35 years ago. Accuracy comes down to regulation, and some brands do a better job out of the factory than others. Some of the most accurate I have are made by Henry Archer and Martenero, which both have Miyota 9000 series movements.
