One thing I should have added about the film that I've thought a lot about in the past three years since I made this video... The film is also about indoctrination and escaping indoctrination. Christof talks about the set as a place that is utopian and as a safe place in a crazy world. "I have given Truman the chance to lead a normal life. The world, the place you live in, is the sick place." Despite this world he created being supposedly so utopian, Truman still wants to escape. I think it is comparable to those trying to escape a cult or religion, or some other kind of indoctrination that they grew up with. Leaving means difficult challenges and perhaps never seeing people you love ever again. But leaving also seems like the only rational thing to do.
@haileymarie4843 жыл бұрын
this is incredibly late, but i also think it’s important to note that, despite claiming to “give Truman the “chance to live a normal live” Christof has gone out of his way to hurt and traumatize Truman throughout his whole life. The death of his dad is the most obvious example of this. While the death of his dad may have primarily been in order to give Truman a fear of the water so that he wouldn’t be tempted to “escape”, there would have been other, possibly more effective ways to prevent that. Instead Christof knowingly chose to put Truman through of the most traumatic things possible, at such a young age. Christof knows this, he knows what he’s done to Truman, and yet he is extremely confident in the idea that he has given Truman a desirable life that can’t be experienced in the real world. Perhaps if Christof had in fact succeeded in giving Truman a fulfilling life in the world that he had created for him, Truman would never be inclined to escape.

What's so heartwarming about this movie is that even the biggest fans of Truman's show - even the people in the Truman themed bar, even the two old ladies who have presumably watched the show every day of his life - are rooting for him, not for the show. When it becomes clear that Truman wants out, they want him to make it. That's a sign of real love right there.

Only this morning, I was thinking that "The Truman Show," "The Matrix," and "They Live" are valuable resources for understanding something that I call "decision landscaping." Decision landscaping is an expansion of choice architecture, the latter of which is the means by which our choices (such as dishes in a serving line) are influenced by how they're positioned, presented, or framed. Decision landscaping is the way elements of popular culture (such as multiple choice tests, which teach us not to look beyond the predetermined options presented to us by authority figures) shape our perceptions of reality. Of the three movies I mentioned, "The Truman Show" is more meaningful than "The Matrix."

The Truman show is basically well-plotted stuff...It can be a country that you belong to/culture that you are involved in/religion and faith that you believe in/social expectation that you have to adhere to... Maybe our whole lives can be a plotted show. Look at the general life cycle, from birth, going to school, getting a job, marrying another one, giving birth, aging, death... even the final show(death scene) is the same for everyone. Everyone's body breaks down to the dust and ultimately disappears. The degree, scale, extent of each person's life is different (For example, their wealth, thinking level, etc) but basically, human life is alike one another.

Here goes my thoughts... Back in 2013, I was miserable. I was stuck in my hometown, teaching for a principal I hated, being mistreated at every professional level. I wanted to escape so bad, I applied to EVERY University of California doctoral program I could find. I think I sent out 9-12 applications, and one came back with an acceptance AND financial aid. I was so happy when I read the letter I cried. My wife and child were so excited to move with me to California. Then...we shared the news. We were AMAZED at how many people tried to tell us it was a bad idea. People would literally ask me what I was going to do with my family if I took the offer, as if they could not come with me. Even our families were not so keen to the idea, but they knew we would do what we wanted either way. It was insane how much people were telling us to just stay put and to leave our ambitions alone. Then about a week before we left, we watched The Truman Show on Netflix. About 30 minutes in, we both looked at each other and said, "this is freaky." The way the people treated Truman and his desire to leave were almost IDENTICAL to the way the people in our hometowns were behaving. It was almost like a direct message telling us to just push forward. 7 years later, I have no regrets.

It's a great movie (one of my personal favourites), but it's not as original as people make out. The script appears to be strongly inspired by a 1988 episode of The Twilight Zone: "Special Service" (which is also well worth checking out).

I’ve been think about this movie a lot and how it deals with determinism vs free will, with Kristoff (off Christ) representing determinism and Truman (true man) representing free will. Also spoilers for the ending I loved that once he steps through the door at the end we don’t see what happens next because we are also the audience and in a way equally complicit.

"Before reality TV exploded into the main stream this movie predicted it" Just my opinion not fact......Reality TV was a thing back in the early 90s (and earlier) when Niccol wrote the Truman script. It wouldn't be that far fetch back in the 90s to ask......How popular will reality shows become? How far in scope would reality TV explore? **The movie was spectacular. Wish today we could see movies like that. Note: The timing of the 1998 Truman Show was perfect. Networks began to flood the market with new reality shows (late 90s- early 2000). Survivor, Big Brother, MTV reality shows, and a few others. SAD FACT: One of my favorite reality shows ended with only one season. One of the contestants (just after the show aired) died on 9/11. (Yes- Angle was a firefighter) Show - Murder in a Small Town X

It was just in watching your video that the repetition of life...in both office space and groundhog day slapped me in the face. Funnily enough...those 3 movies are some of my favs. Office space top 10 to 20. I do find truman and groundhog more of an effort to watch. They aren't as easy a watch as office space. I can watch office space over and over again...while with the other 2, i can go a few years before needing to see them again.

Just define who are you escaping from? You say one day we will all be Truman. Being watched by who exactly? And escaping from being watched by who exactly? This movie showed me that whatever the creatures such as the human try to control someone's life by faking life around him, they will never know the real psychology of that person because it is not these creatures who made the human in the first place, they know nothing and they can predict nothing. I loved Truman show for showing me the weakness of the human being who thinks their selves and compare their selves with The Creator.
