The original ending as written was that once Truman steps through the door he finds himself in a gift shop, adorned with his face on loads of crappy merchandise. And images of his life over the years used as cheap sentiments on T-Shirts, mugs etc. To which he just stares in shock.

When I was in high school in 1976-77,I wrote a story, a script treatment if you will, about a man who lived in a small southwestern town. His entire life was a TV show, his wife was a contest winner. The whole world was watching this man's life on TV and they ran a contest to see who would be his wife. She moved to the town and got to marry him. My ending had him finding out and then he got into a car and drove off towards the desert, the road going across the desert to the mountains. As he drove he realized the whole desert mountain scene in front of him was a fabrication, a drape with a picture on it. The end of my story had him yelling at the director as he ripped the drape open and vanished behind it. The thing is, I wrote this in 1977. When the Truman show came out I was flabbergasted. There was no reality tv when I was in school. There was nothing like this at all. I handed out copies of this story to teachers and other people who thought it was brilliant but as time went by, as my life went on, it vanished into history. I always wondered if it got passed along till someone saw it and made the movie.

Consider the ending of "The Truman Show"...he finds a door that opens up to the 'real world'...as he walks out he 'escapes' from the scripted TV show.... But does he? What if everything that happened to Truman in that entire movie was all part of an elaborate script? What if they had always planned for a storyline where Truman discovered that his world was under a dome? From his birth they had been preparing the script for the day he would find the edge of the dome and walk out the door. Christof was really just another actor playing the part of the show's creator. He wasn't really the creator at all. From the earliest construction of the dome...they had created two domes - one inside of the other. When Truman walked out that door at the end of the movie, he actually walked INTO the larger dome. Yes, he had been living in a 'dome within a dome'. Now that Truman had been carefully led to his discovery of the first dome and allowed to think he was escaping from it into 'reality', the next phase of his TV show could begin: For the next thirty years audiences would watch Truman live his life in the second dome...the dome he was convinced was the 'real world' that had been denied him for the first thirty years of his life. The audience watches as Truman marries Lauren Garland - an actress pretending to be from the 'real world' who snuck back into the dome to tell Truman all about how he could escape. He gets a job and writes a book about his previous life in the dome - never even suspecting that he's STILL in an even larger dome!
@man_on_wheelz4 жыл бұрын
Damn elaborate alternative insight on the movies ending. But don't you think at some point he'd be tipped off when he decides he wants to finally travel to Fiji now that he's in the real world? Can't go to Fiji if you're still in a dome that houses a dome.
@johnellizz4 жыл бұрын
@@man_on_wheelz I think that problem could be solved by the technological wizardry of the second dome. This dome would be much more sophisticated - since Truman would have entered it as a grown-up with a discerning mind. The second dome for the second half of the Truman Show would need to seem like a much larger world. All the vast earnings achieved from the success of the first dome would have allowed them to prepare a no-expenses-spared, state-of-the-art holographic dome-world. Even more astonishing, the live actors Truman encountered in the first dome would be replaced with solid holograms - totally illusory people. This measure was decided upon in order to eliminate the problem of human actors (who as we saw in the first movie can be quite flawed in their performances). Truman would be allowed to successfully 'sue' the fictional Christof and live in luxury in the second dome. The audience would remain engaged with this story-arc to see how money spoils the sweet-natured Truman. Because of the versatility of the holographic dome, Truman would encounter scripts that test his character to the limit. The audience would watch to see if his sanity ever breaks.
@johnellizz4 жыл бұрын
@@phatkatracing Truman would accept this domeworld as his true reality since he believed that he had already escaped from the show. Especially after he visited a holographic Fiji. That would satisfy him that this world was vast and real. Truman would start a family - never realizing that his adorable children were merely simulated holograms and not even living people. Over the years that Truman spent in the dome, audiences would be kept spellbound by the question: Will Truman ever figure it out? To entice the audience to keep watching, the false world around Truman will be filled with hints and discrepancies so subtle that Truman will never quite notice them. (Nothing like when the lighting fixture fell from the sky in the first movie. That was way too obvious.) Audiences will enjoy watching Truman fail to deduce thee truth from all the subtle hints. They will feel smarter than Truman and feel good about themselves.
@MarkJones-hc9pf4 жыл бұрын
@@johnellizz But what about if the second dome then turned out to be within a third dome? And the third dome, being number three, allowed the thee domes to be a grand shell game. So, in effect, it turns out that Truman is actually a pea. Naturally Truman is deeply disturbed to find this out - and it certainly launches a final torpedo in the whole Fiji holiday tangent, because Fiji,, it turns out, does not grant tourist visas to travelling peas.

I saw this in high school with my brother and we left contemplating whether or not everyone we knew was "in on it". Fast forward to a couple of months ago--I had my kids watch it and they turned to me and asked if I was really their mom or if I was also "in on it"

I live 20min from where the Truman Show was filmed and was able to go see it as they were doing the walking scene where he walks out and puts his hands up. That is a beautiful part of Seaside where they have a lot of bands perform there throughout each year.

"The Truman Shows production discovered that The Truman Show would be competing..." That's quite redundant there, Mark. I've said it before many times, you really need to use different terms to describe things and cut down on saying the film's title so much in most cases. This sentence would have been better as "The Truman Show production discovered that it would be competing...". Of course, he probably won't even read this since I've never seen him actually reply to any YT comments, which is a shame. As for the film, it's one of my favorites. Beautifully crafted and expertly acted by everyone, especially Jim.

@@ziggy8190 What's a mock? A play? Heading to Google it. I realize now I sounded a little condescending in my other comment. Sorry! Word vomit/know-it-all probs -- a few of my main personal interests are intertwining into one zone with this film! It would be cool to examine in a writing or language class or similar!!! ;)
@ziggy81903 жыл бұрын
@@yeslek A mock refers to a mock-paper or past paper that we would do in preparation for our GCSE’s and A-Levels, they would normally be done under exam conditions and our results from the mocks would form the basis of where to revise and improve. Apart from the Truman show, we’ve also seen Othello with Laurence Fishburne, To Kill a Mockingbird, Hotel Rwanda but yeah, English is my favourite subject and that is probably helped by the fact that many of the topics we study can be applied to the real world and other subjects such as history which I’m also studying at A-Level. And don’t worry, you weren’t being condescending at all :) While not all films were strictly linked in to our topics of revision, films such as Othello and the play of course helped us to gain an understanding of themes such as racism, betrayal, misogyny, honour among many more.
