The US incarcerates more people - both per capita and by sheer numbers - than any other nation on earth. Our prisons are inhumane hellholes, and private prisons are making a killing. Let's talk about our horrendous prison system and look at some much better justice systems in other countries.

I’ve had a school trip to one of Norway’s most highest security prison. (Having a school trip to a place like that in itself speaks how safe it is) Norway’s prison philosophy can be summed up in 1 sentence that the head warden said: “The only thing our prison is meant to take away are their freedom, not their humanity.”
@AdEl-kj8uc
@AdEl-kj8uc 2 жыл бұрын
Actually I don't think that's the right way to look at it either. Why would they take away their freedom? The only goal should be is to rehabilitate them and taking some of their freedom away is sometimes necessary and that's why they do it, not just arbitrary.

@@AdEl-kj8uc Well there has to be some form of punishment. We are not Gods, but we aren’t devils either. Taking away someone’s freedom is a way of saying “We weren’t able to be responsible with it, so we’re taking it away from you until we deem that you can handle it responsibly.”
@acethefiredragon8525
@acethefiredragon8525 2 жыл бұрын
@@AdEl-kj8uc you should direct those words towards the US prison system, not towards me. Revenge and punishment are 2 separate things, the US system catering towards the former. Revenge is destructive, not only to yourself, but also society. But punishment is necessary. The fact to the matter is, you still did something that hurt other people. And that can’t be ignored. Your background and reasoning does not justify those actions. We must have sympathy for these people, after all, people are born good, and circumstances make them do bad things, but that doesn’t excuse them of the fact that they still did something bad. Religious view of hell is not of revenge, but of punishment of peoples sins, once these sins have been punished, they’re able to go to heaven. I’m not a religious person, but I do agree with the idea/philosophy. Just as important reward is for doing good deeds, punishment is equally as important for those who do bad deeds. You can’t just give murderes and rapists free therapy sessions. That undermines the weight and consequences of their actions and is also a huge disrespect to the people affected, whose livelihoods have been destroyed or changed forever, but also a big safety concern to society at large. Taking away their freedom protects other people from them. Criminals are people too, who’s circumstances led them to do bad. You must therefore have sympathy towards them and help them, rehabilitate them so that they can be normal people again, with a good life. But what can’t be denied is that they have done bad things, they’ve hurt other people and that can’t be ignored, those actions must still be punished. Hence the appropriate phrase “We only take away their freedom, not their humanity.”
@acethefiredragon8525

They don't necessarily need to be nice as such, those rooms in that Norwegian prison remind me more of the hall of residence accommodation at a typical UK university. I would not say they were accommodations most people would choose if they had a choice hell even when I was at university most students with even a part-time job to supplement their income tended to opt for alternative options on the private market (shared houses or private apartments etc mostly offered by the private sector). Livable yes but looks more like giving the basics needed to rehabilitate people to live life as a human being in human society rather than treating people like animals and expecting them to somehow not be adversely affected by that experience like the US does.

Well, that man will at some point (depending on the sentence) come back to society, he will at some point become someones neighbour. would you rather have an neighbour with a criminal record that was treated like an animal for 5+ years or a man that has basically been in rehabilitation for 5+ years? Not everyone can be saved as i said and all the work/money may be a waste on certain inmates, but thats not an excuse to not try and help people. You can experience the system and discover for yourself how you can adapt and contribute positively to society when you are released. There is a massive success rate. Our parents have a lot to answer for, and their parents too, and so on... One needs to break the cycle. Or as Philip Larkin suggests, don't have children. See his poem below; They fuck you up, your mum and dad. They may not mean to, but they do. They fill you with the faults they had And add some extra, just for you. But they were fucked up in their turn By fools in old-style hats and coats, Who half the time were soppy-stern And half at one another's throats. Man hands on misery to man. @@MasontheMarxistDog Wrong. What leads to fascism is the unlimited or more than the poorest can afford to give to a party. Who in their right mind thinks that all the rich people donating to official for their campaigns actually doesn't expect something in return? If we want Democracy in a Capitalist system you have to eliminate corporate donors and have a maximum donation of say $10/PERSON. That way the politicians actually have to work for the people and can't just buy elections. That's it, that's all. very simple. As someone who regrettably was incarcerated in an American prison in the past 5 years- I can attest to the issues this video brought up about it in criticism. I feel that the current model of prison and jail in our country is only a way to convienently hide the issues our society creates and possibly make a select few wealthy in the process. As a white male, I firsthand saw the personal biases of the guards playing out in the units they oversaw and thus the white inmates would “be let off the hook” with minor infractions and even more serious ones whereas people of color were routinely taken out of camera’s view and physically assaulted over trivial infraction. It’s seriously a weekly, sometimes daily thing. Multiple guards ganging up on the unlucky ones that causes a “nuisance” to the guards of their respective pods or units. It’s seriously a sad and broken system that benefits maybe 0.001% of our nations population and only ensures that since little to no therapeutic work is done that most will be doomed to repeat past behaviors that often are just to survive and return to repeat the process. I was paid 27¢ an hour to do my assigned work, and that was a good paying job in the NY state prisons I was in. Sad and needs reform.
@foxcollr831
@foxcollr831 10 ай бұрын
Thanks for your perspective! That is frightening and it makes me deeply sick that you can witness something like prison guards selectively beating non-white inmates, it can be corroborated by tons of people who experienced similar things, and yet people will turn a blind eye because prison is treated like the wild wild west. How can prison guards be let off the hook for mercilessly beating, torturing, and abusing prisoners... when the prisoners they're dealing with are often only serving time for non-violent crimes like drug possession and petty theft. I'm sure so many prisoners regret what they've done, as do free people who have broken the law but didn't get caught or escaped sentencing. Hell, I've stolen many times from the local supermarket, usually only a few dollars in items at a time and only when I've completely overdrafted and have no money to my name, and I feel bad about it even knowing that it's a multi-million dollar corporation. But those guards? Hard to believe they feel bad for the many crimes they've committed and never have to pay for, they keep doing it and nothing is stopping them. :/ It truly does feel like this system exists to "conveniently hide the issues".

Correction, the prison population isn't higher than that of during Stalin's USSR. That is a misconception for including pararole and not just imprisoned people for the USA while not doing similar things for the Soviet Union. Which of you take what was Soviet pararole, you would get the population. If you include pararole, then you can include kolhozniks... On a more serious note: In 1986 the USSR had an incarcerated population of 2 356 933, while in the year 2007 the total USA incarcerated population was 2 293 157 . Population of USSR in 1986 was about 279 254 000. (So about 844 per 100 000 people were incarcerated) Population of USA in 2007 was about 301 200 000. (So about 761 per 100 000 people were incarcerated). In 1950s the total main incarcerated people of USSR totaled about 5 million. For example, on the first of January of the year 1953, two months before Stalin's death, there were about 2 625 000 people in camps, labour colonies and prisons, about 2 753 000 in special settlements(basically deported), and 65,000 were exiled settlers. That is about 5 443 000 in total with additional things, pararole equivalents and etc.

@@user-ij5sw7fd6x Really? Yeah there are 2 legal terms used for it the first is "civil asset forfeiture" & the second is "civil judicial forfeiture". Now unfortunately data on exactly how much states & the federal government take from people is spotty at best, but it is believed to range anywhere from $2 billion to $6 billion per year over the past 5 years. Another thing I didn't hear the video mention is that in many jails/prisons inmates are charged fees for things like if they need to see the doctor/medical staff, a lot of places charge a daily fee for "room and board" which can be as high as like $80 a day in I think it was Maine. A lot of places also charge a booking fee. If people are released from prison/jail earlier than they were sentenced for on parole and/or they have to do supervised probation after they are released many states have some sort of monthly supervision fee that for most states cap out at $60 or less, but a few that go up to $100-$150 per month. Failing to pay fees you are charged on time & at the amount you manage to work out with authorities in a payment plan [if you can't just pay all of it off at once,] can result to anything from extending the probation period, penalty fees for late or insufficient payment, having your driver's license revoked [which doesn't really help people to get to & from a job,] being given [x] hours of community service work, to potentially being thrown back in jail/prison.

Distraction is easy - cuz NO ONE wants to admit HOW AWFUL this hellish place is. We need to put the shit down - talk to human beings - and make a plan. A plan to MAKE the government work FOR US. If they don't - we make A NEW ONE.

Is Europeans ask ourselves that about many things that seem to be normal in the US. Also, the prison system is not only like that in Scandinavian countries. Germany is basically on the same level as them when it comes to prisons despite way higher population. And most parts of Europe have a very humane system

The prisoners in Norway live better than the poor in the US. This is truly saddening.

I live in Denmark and this channel keeps reminding me, that good well functioning democracies doesn't come about by themselves. A continuous effort is needed to society on a good course and there will always be room for improvements. Even in the Scandinavian countries.

True. All we can do is speak up about injustice. If it gets too bad we might have to start a revolution (haha).
