But the evolution of design always comes with the benefit of hindsight of what works in past-designs and what can be improved upon. The AK47 could have easily been made in the 30's. But it wasn't. The base materials all existed, but the reasoning with the benefit of hindsight didn't. This isn't just the case with firearms, either. This can be applied to anything. It doesn't even have to be something tangible.

I really wanna convert and play with uzi pistol from the ground up. Get the rate of fire to match the full size Uzi. Using heavier parts, bolt especially. Heavy springs. @@SwiftyEmpire Theres actually a giant difference with that timeframe. Both SMGs are coming from the WW2-mentality of making SMGs that are as cheap and easily mass produceable as possible. Because you want millions of them, and you want them NOW. But the MP-40s is Germanys first and only big attempt to make a cheap SMG, simplifying the more difficult to produce PM-38. Otoh, the Uzi is a late peace time design which perfected the simplistic SMG concept. Cheaper than an MP-40, but with better ergonomics and realibility. But also not as primitive as a Sten-Gun, M3 and PP-43, which were much cheaper than either of those guns. So you got the one of the first guns of a class, and a late gun that perfected it. That said, still makes for an interesting comparision.

As far as his claim about the UZI stock not being wobbly, I guess when you compare it to a gun that's 40 years older and spent time actually being used to what looks like a safe queen that's true but most of them I've encountered were wobbly and that's once you get past the terrible cheek weld they provide (even worse than the MP40 which is nothing to brag about in that department either.) Toss a wooden stock in that UZI and you improve it's ergonomics and accuracy greatly, and lose everything that he claimed made it better while retaining the increased felt recoil the shorter action provides. Not saying the UZI isn't a good gun, it has its place, it just isn't the MP40 killer this guy thinks it is.

I used to be a range officer for competitive subgun matches and the MP40 didn't seem to have any huge advantage over the UZI, although it would have been nice to see some MP40s run with modern optical sights but nobody wanted to do that to their guns! I think the longest shots were about 35-40 yards, but those were typically at 4" plates, the MP40 would probably do much better than the UZI at 75-100 yards just due to its longer sight radius which would be mitigated by the use of optics.

And the Sturmgewehr was moreso meant as a replacement for the Kar98k than the MP40 since they wanted to give every possible soldier more firepower due to being demolished by the Soviets. Now the MP40 being overpriced, too complex to machine, and having a horrible stock compared to every other subgun used in the war by other nations (Except the Thompson but even the Americans decided to replace it) is the Germans' problem.

I fired both the same day at a gun range near Las Vegas and posted on my FB page. The Uzi fired much faster and more of a kick back. The MP-40 was slower but much smoother. The outcome I came out with as a retired army sergeant is that the Uzi is much better for clearing rooms, stairwells and trenches and the MP-40 is better for accuracy especially past 150 meters

I would take an MP40 bc I would want to stand a better chance at knocking someone down past 100m, which happens a lot more often than literally mowing people down at short range. Hell. The AK-47 and the akm are incomparable in quality, and that's the same gun following the same principles. This comparison is goofy.
