The thing about crossbows was, as you mentioned, a soldier with only a little training could do what a longbowman took years of training to do.
@dashrendar53206 ай бұрын
Yeah for sure. It was pretty darn close with minimal training. Which is crazy when arming a army
@nickmendez55466 ай бұрын
The English molded their culture around longbow training for this reason. In the 1200s, they made it law that every man had to train longbow, starting at like 14-15 years old. Then, in the 1300s, they passed a law setting aside Sundays for training. Where all of the men in town would get together and train.

Awesome video. The brigandine test is such a valuable and well done test. So far it seems like, you & admin result, Tod's workshop, and Way of Archery are the only people that have published video tests that are done with attention to period accuracy as well as using weapons capable of well over 100+J. Nicely done! If you two get together again, a potential idea could be how close of an analog to a heavy duty warbow is a compound bow of different weights so long as you use a heavy enough arrow. There is a video out there of 1000 grain arrow going 200fps out of ~70lb compound bow if I remember correctly. Plus, it would probably be fun to shoot such a heavy war arrow out of a true "state of the art" bow design to compare.

If it's historical re-enactment, longbow vs crossbow, very good analysis. However, consider this: Tod made and uses his calibrated crossbow that shoots heavy war arrows exactly replicating the ballistics from a 160 pound longbow. From a fantasy standpoint, add gastro-phetes reload and Tod's calibrated crossbow would reload as fast as a longbow. Then add Jorgen's magazine. At that point, the crossbow is very advantageous.

This video really shows why English archers at Crecy vastly outperformed the Genovese crossbowmen that the French used. Still, I'd expect a 600 lbs crossbow to do better against armour. 600 lbs?! Where does all that power go? Maybe it needs heavier bolts? The reason crossbows were banned, was mostly because they were easy. You don't have to train a lifetime with it to be effective, which means you could arm peasants with them and they could massacre knights. Of course then Edward 1 told his peasants to train a lifetime with a longbow.
@dashrendar5320Ай бұрын
So a big thing that’s deceptive is that steel is a poor conductor for efficiency. If you have a composite crossbow, they actually are much more efficient. Additionally, the stroke is so much shorter that it generates less than acceleration. However, it can get pretty close to range and penetration power with literally zero training.

You guys really made a point with this video ! The misconceptions about the crossbow efficiency are huge. It's mainly due to the fact that most people see history as a continuous line of technological evolution. (only going forward). With such a simple representation of history its really easy to consider that crossbow is "an improvement of the bow" (even if its false). I would also add that the smaller size of crossbow projectiles allows to carry much more ! Wich is a big advantage in a military campaign. And also the crosbow can be used in an open field in a very safe way if you carry a big shield in your back (just like genovese crossbowmens). Now pray for the weather to be dry and sunny ;) and pray for your general to protect you from the enemy cavalry (cause hey you really gonna miss some mobility with a pavese in your back)

The thing that scared nobility and those in power, is that the crossbow is a weapon that can allow the average peasent to be deadly against anyone in as little as a day, or the time it takes to just craft one crossbow. Where as bows took months and years of training, both on how to use it and how to aim, but also the sheer physical prowess required. The key thing about the crossbow is the sheer turn around time.
@Mattias_Thorslidlbrodir6 ай бұрын
I will preface this by saying that I am only a hunting archer and I’ve never used a crossbow-but I did study medieval military history as part of my degree and I went into this video expecting the warbow to outperform the crossbow. Conventional military history wisdom is that the crossbow was in every performance metric inferior to the longbow but was popular due to much lower training requirement.

@thekaxmax6 ай бұрын
that's the thing to remember with a mediaeval crossbow: they were about 10% efficient compared to a longbow or a recurve because of the draw length. So that 1200 lb war crossbow mentioned is about equivalent to a 120 lb longbow, and with ammo half the weight. Crossbows have only one main advantage: they don't take a lot of training, where a bow takes many years. Inswing torsion crossbows, however, fire arrows and close to the same draw length as a bow, so the weights will be comparable. a 250 lb torsion crossbow would be as scary as many people think a mediaeval crossbow was.

@@jonathanengdahl9045 The one mentioned is a direct copy of a mediaeval original. Design elements of the bow make the difference--all it needs is 1-2cm less draw length and the useful power output drops significantly. Also note the bolts make a difference.

They started being used in the 15th century at a time when they were already started to being replaced by firearms. My theory. Many different sorts of methods of long range combat exist at one point. Throwing weapons, sling and stone, atlatl, bow, but there is actually a 500 year period when people think this doesn't work. One man uses all of these methods of long range fighting, trains for 8 years straight, still does not hit the target. The rest of the tribes in the region finally accept that long range combat does not work. So someone gets an idea. Throughout the region there is a great gathering of all the chiefs of all the tribes. I've got it, he says, if we must needs go to war, we sling stones. Cheapest most effective way of having long ranged combat. Just need a piece of string and a stone. We start in the morning, in the evening we go home, our anger is over and no one gets hurt. We stay back 80 feet, no closer, further acceptable. It is agreed. So in the morning they gather all their stones, they hurl them, picking up the stones hurled at them, and of course by evening no one gets hurt. In time there is another war. Then another. Then another. Same results. But one day someone actually hits someone. Everyone is taken aback in shock. How can this be? Its been proven that long ranged combat doesn't work, but a stone has struck its mark and someone lays dead. In the region another meeting of the chiefs is called. Someone says, so it seems some people actually can get good at long ranged combat with practice, what do we do? I got it... Someone says, switch to a skill they haven't practiced. Next we use bows. So for quite a while it is people who target practice is done on, eventually proving that long range combat is actually possible.

I think the argument about crossbow being good vs armor / more powerfull than bows comes from two main sources (have to rebuke it all the time myself): 1) Aforementioned church ban + they have much higher poundage so layman with no understanding of draw length, power stroke and efficiency of limbs assumes that bigger number = better. 2) Video games such as AoE2 and Total War give crossbowmen bonus to armor penetration or some bonus true damage when compared to archers who are portrayed as being faster but weaker per shot.

Thanks, man, yeah, I kinda started off the wrong way. Long form is a lot more fun and you can make it more entertaining, but I just started getting better at it probably at the beginning of this year. I think it’s a big learning curve.

seeing Admin swinging that bow around,bring up one of the scenes i always laugh about,when the bow itself becomes a melee weapon,i wonder how effective it would be.Or how much it would take before it breaks

Huh, not a bad idea to test possibly…maybe with an olde bow

People just look at the poundage without looking at the actual ballistics and physics differences. A war bow arrow is accelerated for far longer due to the longer draw length before leaving the bow imparting far more of the stored energy in the bow limbs to the projectile resulting in more kinetic energy. It's kinda like firing the same cartage out of a snub nose revolver vs a rifle, you just won't get the same energy transfer. However the longbow does not scale well and going past 180 punds is not really feasible for a war bow archer however a cross bow can scale far beyond that without putting to much strain on the crossbowman using ratchet and windlasses far into the realm of a siege ballistae if needs be as it's more of a material limit rather than a physical fitness and strength one.

I’m betting that the actual reason crossbows were outlawed wasn’t to do with what they could do in battle but what they could do outside of it. You gotta think that criminals and assassins got a hold of these and were killing and robbing people with them a ton. Nobility terrified they were going to get crossbowed while taking a shit like Tywin Lannister.

Do you think that the crossbows of the Chinese that used an actual bow and arrow and the ancient Greek crossbows would get rid of the rang and pierce advantage of the bow?
@dashrendar53206 ай бұрын
You know I am not 100% sure of the differences that would be entailed in that for mass and FPS. Would need to do some more research
@charlesbangs96636 ай бұрын
@dashrendar5320 if it did it would give militias slwho didn't have time to train advantages over normal crossbows in the open field. On the crossbow and ambushed has got me thinking on changing up some of the elite units in my writing and dnd armies. I have already changed up rules on slings and been adding them to more intelligent things as a weapon, do to what you and several other channels have been showing they can do and how they were used historically. Thanks for what you are doing on this channel.

My mate has a modern crossbow called a VLAD it's a multi shot crossbow meaning you have a mag you put around 6 arrows in and you cock it back by the lever it has, which means you can shoot off 6 arrows in about a minute. It's 120lb, now ive got a 60lb bow so soon as my bike is up and running I'm going to visit him and do the same test. Bare in mind his crossbow material is very different to the guy you was with, but the distance from shot from his compared to my 60 is same as you guys. He says his crossbow can penatrate better than my 60lb bow, I'm actually doubting that now, 60lb probably doesn't seem alot but concider that most hunters shoot a 45lb bow to hunt deer still says its a very dangerous weapon, especially at 25 yards. This was really interesting. I can see pros and cons to each. But even if the crossbow guy was behind cover at my level i could still run at him using a sling shot not allowing him to peak, and trust me some slings are also very powerful if you string up a 15kg exercise band which a guy i know in Malta does, he makes his own sling shots and some are OMG!!! powerful lol. With a jagged stone or a 1 ounce led ball it would probably knock him back, so there's that to, then when i get to him my axe is just a one hit. So only if he's got the higher ground has he got the advantage, if i had the appropriate armor on i could easy rush him shooting heavy led balls or even jagged edge stone and he wouldn't want to peep. Verses a warbow that could penatrate the armor i would need so i could run because you behind a tree is less than a target than him having to show his upper torso full on. Hmm interesting to see how that would work out, also let's say he takes a shot and i dodge he's got to use a tool to re arm the crossbow while being pelted by stones. I bet from say 15 yards i could get to him before he gets to shoot off another round.

I think you could afford to add more mass to the crossbow, it could add more damage if it had more mass for sure but I don’t know how it would effect the speed
