There is a Greek legend that in a single combat duel between two generals one put his armor on, then the other chose the bow and no armor (thinking he could win with agility) and then the armored one got his sling and out-shot the archer, because the sling had longer range than the bow. That's a legend, personally I find it hard to believe that someone would get hit at max range of either bow or sling, incoming sling projectiles are more difficult to see than arrows but if you constantly move at long ranges it's gonna be impossible to get hit. In formations the whole dynamics change..

Humans didn't exist until 40 years after the events of Zootopia during which they waged a war of conquest that ended with humanity being blasted back into the stone age while animals got devolved back into an animalistic state. But the birds and reptiles actually ended up better off as the Zootopians banished them to live underground. There was a strange period of advanced birds and reptiles with stone age humans for slaves that lasted 500 years before humans eventually revolted.
@RachDarastrix25 ай бұрын
Some of you might be about to ask me, "Wait, if Robinhood was a fox from over a thousand years before there were humans, then where did humans come from?" Well see, 144 years before the events of Zootopia there was a chimpanzee who married his cousin. They had children who married their cousins and siblings, who had children who married their cousins and siblings, who had children who married their cousins and siblings, who had children who married their cousins and siblings, and then had children who married their cousins and siblings, resulting in a generation of chimpanzees that could no longer have children with non relatives. In fact, the Chimpanzee who married his cousin starting all this, these 2 were referred to as "Mister and misses Human." That's where the name comes from.

I was waiting for this topic ! i would say the right answer is " it depend of the era " . Antiquity battles where made in a really big scale by comparison to medieval time wich as 2 results : a. You need to equip a HUGE amount of men with cheap mass produced ranged weapon and bullets (ex : Zama in 202 BC was 75 000 mens VS hastings in 1066 AC was about 20.000 mens) not the same scale , not the same logistic. b. battle where made really différently. Antiquity battle where "slow" soldier formations where much larger in that time so it was certainly easier for slings to make a lot a damage (on a long distance) even with untrained mens. Medieval battle where much more " mobile " with smaller formations and had more cavalry (proportionaly) and slings are probably not as good as bows when it come to hit moving targets or small groups of ennemies (on a long distance). Sooo at this point it was probably quicker to train peoples with archery. In medieval time slings where also less versatile than bows when it come about castle defence. Its less practicle to properly use a sling in a big formation from a castle wall. Specialy if the ennemy is under your aim angle (near the wall) at this point its probably better to take a big rock and throw it by hands (wich they did). Slings where still used in medieval time because of 2 main advantages : a- It was still cheap way to make a lot of damage b- Projectiles are not really impacted by wind and rain by comparison to arrows wich make slings "more reliable" depending on the context. Sry for this long comment.. excellent Vidéo as always. thx Dash

The fact that you only got glancine blows with the sling on the helmet shows the superior accuracy of the bow, and you don't hurt what you don't hit, but the sling would be very useful against massed troups and it would be logistically easier to keep supplied with ammo so you could just send masses of stones in the general direction of your enemies.
@vicentcampsvilallonga5 ай бұрын
There are some points that I can tell you: 1st, shooting so close with such a long slingshot does not give you more power, with a slingshot that is 8-10 centimeters shorter you will see how your aim and power improve. 2º the turns are much better than the last times, now you don't turn as fast and you gain control. 3º using river or sea stones, round or oval, you have more density in the projectile and you gain power and kinetic energy, so the impact is more destructive. 4º a note of logic, a group of 30 or 40 men firing at the same time and concentrating the shots on a point on the enemy line, could get several hits in a row on the same shields and break them or render them useless quickly.
@patricj9515 ай бұрын
Interesting video! If I understand it right: with a sling you get greater kinetic energy and momentum, but with a bow a better penetration. And I think a sling is physically pretty comparable to a hockey shot. Which we know can really be fatal without protection.
@dashrendar53205 ай бұрын
Sling certainly will give you better energy and momentum. The big difference comes from the shot. That’s being slung, lead shot is going to be a significant impact which is probably going to be far superior to a hockey puck so it’ll even damage through armor.

An interesting question is how effective each of them are against a formation. Arrows probably have an easier time sneaking through the gaps of a shield formation and hitting people. As for the impact damage, a well placed rock can break ribs, maybe even perfurate lungs. Really nasty weapon. The arrow has more penetration but I can see how someone can remain standing for a while. But a rock will put you on the ground real quick.
@dashrendar53205 ай бұрын
Most assuredly, also the formation of the people using them can vary dramatically as slingers have to be spaced out further. And arrows tends to do much better against armored Calvary because it can disrupt the horses.

A sling is lighter, cheaper, has better logistics, can easily be carried as a secondary weapon with a spear and shield. We also have to consider training costs. England famously required people to practice archery on Sundays and required arrows to be manufactured and provided according to royal specifications. All of that has costs. Especially for poorer tribes, requiring people to train with a sling costs almost nothing. If you have the resources of England, an army with longbows is likely better. But that wasn't the norm in the era of the sling.

Is there a way you could simulate and do a test video with a fake hand behind the shield? With this same practice you see... An enemy can raise his shield, duck, and dodge.. But not quickly enough if he was wrong about how you end up releasing. With a bow however he sees how the arrow is pointed at him.

A sling, break bones. Fighter is still out of action, may not kill, but when you have a tent with wounded fighters with broken bones and not able to fight a logistics problem is created. Feeding hungry warriors that aren't able to fight. Not to mention those with concussions and broken skulls. So the war bow may kill outright but the sling cripples out of the army. Which is worse?

In all fairness, we need to know the grains of these river rocks you're hurling around. I'm tuning my sling build and need to know if I need to go with a carbine buffer pouch or a rifle buffer pouch. My hunch is a H3 buffer pouch is an ideal compromise. In the Forum, I hear there's an advantage for the plebian hemp cordage over the more "L III III T" leather varieties. Thoughts?

They were real big. Close to about 5000 grains, so massively oversized but lots of impact force
@danb12855 ай бұрын
@@dashrendar5320 It's awesome to see the difference that all these weapons have based on where all that weight is compared to point of impact, and how the same physics apply to ammo. You're basically shooting small javelins from the warbows, and their ability to go through armor by having such a small impact point, as compared to the sling, is super cool. Sounds about right on weight of those stones. Any videos currently or in future showing ceramic or metal shot? Something more dense. Could probably have a post-apocalypse video where you're slinging nuts/bolts, etc. because those would still work.

If I were to be killed by either, I’d choose the bow and arrow. Blunt force just seems brutal and would take longer to die from.

I think realistically an archer is going to be a much better marksman than a slinger. Now here is my reason, practice. During practice the slinger looses a rock and the rock bounces and fucks off to God knows where. Now instead of spending time practicing the slinger is looking for this one rock. Often, the archer searches every last square inch of that field only to somehow STILL not find this stone. That is now permanently one less stone. This time looking for a stone and the time not finding it adds up after a while. Soon the slinger only has a few stones left, and instead of practicing has to go look for more, or only use this few until they are all lost. That's more time spent not practicing. Meanwhile after the archer has loosed an arrow it sticks into the ground and has a bit of fletching at the end allowing the archer to see exactly where it is, go retrieve it, and then get right back to practicing.

Just curious, were the video games the catalyst for this or did your love of these types of weapons get you into the gaming?

actually it started in junior high when I read lord of the rings. That began the obsession with archery, then I dove into the actual history and wanted to learn as many skills as possible. The Games are just an extension of it I think

@philozoraptor68085 ай бұрын
Hello, is there any point in rotating the sling multiple times before release instead of just once? It is often portrayed like this in videogames, does it add more kinetic energy or is just for "show"?
@dashrendar53205 ай бұрын
For me honestly, it can be done by a very good slinger with just one rotation but when I do it, it’s more just to help me sort out when I think my release should be, so when it “feels right”
