I have a friend, me and him dated. It NEVER felt right but we knew we were more than friends, not romantically but just a deep bond/feeling. I currently refer to him as my brother, he IS my family. We've been through alot and done alot together. What family is isn't just defined by blood, it's defined by experience and the true bond you feel with someone. It's interesting that it was Jack who introduced Meg as his sister. Meg never commented on it. At that time, people used to think that she was living in Jack's shadow, remaining silent by his side. I watched the documentary Under Great White Northern Lights and there is a scene that defines Meg's personality. I remembered that Jack commented, “Meg, can you tell the world something once and for all? and Meg replied: “I'm quiet. What can I say? I would say that you have nothing to do with it." That was Meg White a very shy and introvert woman.

Jack has said on multiple occasions that "the white lie" that they were brothers was necessary, in my opinion, I agree with him, siblings usually have a special musical chemistry with each other and can complement each other's voices and fans love that. On the other hand, siblings have been confused as a couple too creating gossip and confusion among the fans. For example the band Fleetwood Mac and its members Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham were dating when they joined the band, but when they broke up many fans thought the couple argued more like brother and sister. We are fans and we create our own reality about our favorite musicians. Great video, btw.

I think Jack didn't want the public to know that he was in a relationship with her. When that happens, female fans may lose interest in the artist, but if they think he's single, they consider him everyone's boyfriend. There is a bit of curiosity or illusion in that. I do not know why. My favorite song of the duo is "fell in love with a girl", in which the guy knows that she is precisely as in love with him as she is with every other boy in the world but he can't think with common sense and even knowing she is having others in her life he doesn't consider it cheating.

Considering the bluesy nature of their music, I feel like the brother and sister thing is more symbolic for him. Like when a friend calls their best friend their brother, especially in the south. I think it’s more like that rather than anything else. The only reason why it’s weird is because of the marriage certificate and the fact men and women can’t just be friends for some reason.

Fans love gossip, but the duo from the beginning used controversy as a strategy to gain notoriety and surround themselves with a halo of mystery when they became known as brothers. According to Jack they did it.... "to give more importance to their music and that the press did not put their relationship in the first place". Honestly, they have the merit of having become one of the most important musical duos of their time and transcending the music to this day.

One of my favorite bands of all time.. And I came into the band knowing that marriage - divorce - sibling thing.. to me, the “sibling” energy played into the innocent (almost naive)/rough-around-the-edges/“made it at the house while our parents were out” sound.. the “married, but divorced” thing added some tension/passion to the presentation (especially in live shows).. the “white” surname exchange just worked so well with the band name and peppermint aesthetic.. and I mean, the best artists (to me) are a little weird and not to be understood completely.. I always liked that about them (even the fact that they broke up put a nice bow on their run and catalog).. They just hit the perfect mix of EVERYTHING.. lightning in a bottle.. chemistry at the highest level.. real life rock n’ roll shit.. possibly the last of their kind

Just a note because I always have to say something about Weezer. The White Stripes shared the stage with them in 2000 at Spaceland, but the band were well known until the following year. The press is so infuriating. It's like trying to explain something to someone who isn't smart enough to understand a word you're saying. What matters is the music. The sibling thing was obviously just a a fun aesthetic choice and people wouldn't leave it alone. Jack and Meg kept the game up because screw the press and screw you, that's why. Screw nosey people trying to get into their personal business. They're musicians, they're there to play good music and talk about their music, not tell you juicy personal details so you can gossip about their relationship with your lame friends. Their personal lives are none of anyone's business, and good for them for not giving in and giving the press what they wanted. The marriage certificate leak is the stupidest thing of all time and proves that people can't take a hint and just let things be. So lame. I can't be the only person on Earth who wishes *all* his favorite artists had some privacy. I love Jack and Meg and The White Stripes to death and have for many years, and I sure as hell could've gone my whole life without knowing they were divorced, because who the hell cares.
