Yep, pretty epic. There are many awesome clusters of tropical islands, atolls & cays around the globe, some more remote than others. But usually you need a sailing vessel to get there, the sense of adventure & spirit to go in the first place, and the common sense to realise that peace & tranquility beats urban stress every time (not to discount the fact that long term, liveaboard, cruising life has its share of ups & downs). The Whitsundays are special and right on the doorstep of accessibility....... although peak season gets a little mad at times.....

SPOT ON!! And unfortunately the Whitsundays do get crazy busy these days. The 1980’s when we cruised up here it was a different story. It felt like a place that time had forgotten. Australia’s East coast is a magic spot from north to south there’s a bit of everything. 😁🙏

@@colinboniface194 yep it definitely knows how to turn it on! It was a different place in the 80’s must have been way cool in 84!! We first sailed here in 88 and will never forget it. Just magic!

Yeah that drone footage was taken at low tide which was about 2-3m deep and the video from onboard was at high around 6-7m of depth and the visibility was around 3-4m so not bad but not like the pacific where it’s 20m+. Cleaning the hulls never fun in murky water. Visibility does get really good in the Whitsundays’s however this was during a full moon and larger than normal tides when the water has a lot of flow around the Islands and its clarity isn’t the best. Great shots though and that’s the famous Whitehaven Beach 🏖️ in the background.

Looks like paradise. What are the high/low temperatures and water temperature this time of year. How is the fishing? Thank you for bringing me to a place I will never see in this lifetime. Over the decades that you have sailed those waters has there been a huge increase in plastics in the ocean like one sees in South East Asia? (Ref: your time in Thailand)

Hey Pat HNY! The water temps around the Whitsundays average mid to high 20’s. Fishing is great especially out around the reef areas. Australia is very lucky when it comes to plastic pollution as the majority of it is created in Asia and South and Central America so the coastlines here are less affected which doesn’t mean there’s none it’s just nothing compared to what you see overseas.

Hi Peter many thanks 🙏 and glad to hear you enjoy the videos. Firstly there’s no one apart from Rapido doing a performance based trimaran of this size. Trimarans such as Spirit aren’t really popular these days as people are focused more on volume/comfort than sailing ability and performance. From my understanding it’s mainly due to the reduced interior volume. We’re a 54ft trimaran that has plenty of room for the two of us and another couple however we’re really not a lot larger in volume than a 45ft monohull. Our advantage is in our sailing characteristics not in our volume. Whereas the average production Catamaran of this size will have four double cabins and a massive saloon area and cockpit, however the cat will be heavy and won’t perform anywhere near as well as Spirit does especially when it comes to crossing oceans at speed safely. A trimaran also costs a lot to build so your paying more for a boat that sails incredibly well however it doesn’t have the volume of other boats of a similar size so most people that own and love trimaran’s are focused more on the sailing than the comfort and for me comfort at sea sailing is more important than excessive volume while at anchor. Thanks 🙏 yeah the awnings have worked out well. Definitely some work to go on making it weather proof but it’s ok for now. That white cover we have over the aft cabin was a hand me down from a 60m super yacht. It was their old crew hatch cover. Couldn’t have fitted better than it does we were lucky there!! 🙏🙏

@@davidbains5719 yeah been in here a few times before. One of our favourite places when there’s northerlies blowing. And it’s not charted so it’s often less busy than other areas.

I have to confess that I just don't like the Whitsundays... They are like crap imitations of South Pacific islands. Give me Fiji, Tonga or Vanuatu any day.

@@deerfootnz not sure I’d agree they’re crap or that they’re trying to imitate Pacific islands. Not sure of your experience sailing them as it sounds negative but I spent years sailing around them in the 80’s and 90’s and they can be spectacular! There’s some amazing hikes and magic bays where you’re the only boat. Sure they get busy during the season but you can’t have it all. And the beaches are hard to beat! That doesn’t mean they’re better than some of the Pacific islands but at the end of the day we believe every place is special. Whether we’re sailing the Greek Islands, Croatia, the Bahamas or the Swedish archipelago there’s magic everywhere. We live in one amazing place 🌎 ⛵️
